I must sound really old when i say this  , but here's the list in chronological order (according to my memory).
Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss
Doom
Dune2
X-Com:UFO Defense
Warcraft:Orcs and Humans
Bauldur's GateII:Shadows of Amn
Diablo
Starcraft
Half-Life
The Sims
In my opinion, seconds in the series don't really count (eg Doom2), but Bauldur's Gate and Dune are exceptions

Baldur's Gate II comes after Diablo (if you meant Diablo 1), Diablo came out ~1995, Baldur's Gate II somewhere 1999-2000.

Quite some 'gamers' maybe don't like The Sims, but IMHO it's a brilliant game. At least it's a genius idea, and it hooked a lot of 'non-gamers'.

Ultima Underworld is not really that good nowadays, but remember it started it all!!! I mean, back then we've never seen anything like it.
As for the Sims, some people actually believe it is the best PC game of all times .... well not me, maybe something like Syndicate should replace it?

In my opinion, if a game is actually disliked by some, then it can't be worthy of top 10 (i.e. The Sims)
Here's more choices, just suddenly struck my head and had to put it in the forum
San9, Golden Axe, God of Thunder, Marshmellow Duel, Prince of Persia, Rise of Nations, and Alone in the Dark

Hellblade is very right with his suggestions.
Prince of Persia was a good impact, though I dont really like it.
Golden Axe is a definite, It brought a new age of Adventure games.
Rise of Nations put good competition on the Age of Empires series.
Alone in the Dark stetched out to Playstation aswell.
So they were very good choices, Hellblade.

Funny, looks like those classic Atari-games from the beginning of 80's. :D
And what's San9?
