To,
All the persons which are registered to abandonia.com
As, we all know abandonia is a great site offering great games for download. I am one of the new
registered users of the website. I have some ideas reagarding the development of the web
site:-
****:- Many games are very big in size like Prince of Persia 2 (4.78 MB),Alladdin(3.40 Mb),
Alone in the Dark(5.40 Mb). As abandonia does not supports download managers, so it is very
difficult task for a dial up user to download these big games. So one thing we can do is to split
the big files into smaller ones e.g. in sizes of 720 kb's so that download becomes easier. This
technique is also adopted by Symantec Corporation(Famous for Norton Antivirus,
http://www.service.symantec.com/") ('http://www.service.symantec.com/")'). By this way also we can adopt anti stealing scheme also by
then not allowing support for download managers. Believe me, this is a great idea and will
really help the visitors of the website. The spillting can be done by a small 50 kb program
called file splitter available totally free of cost from me since it's website is unknown to me.
You may talk to it's author at martinstoeckli@gmx.ch. The files can then be unsplit using
the same program.
****:-All the games available in the website are in zip format but there is no link for any zip
utility on the website. There are dozens available on other websites like:
WinZip(Most Popular,Shareware):-http://www.winzip.com
Ultimate Zip(Freeware) :- http://www.gamehippo.com
****:- I have my games with me which are totally freeware but since I don't have any website
I wish I could see those games on Abandonia. So is there any method available so that I can
submit those games to the website so that those games may be downloaded directly from Abandonia?
I can give the games through Email Attachments.
****:- As Abandonia is a freeware game site so I think it is also show links of some other
freeware game sites like www.gamehippo.com and www.alex-soft.net. But only if you wish and if
it does not harm the interests of original developers of the websites.
Thanks.

There is a link to an archive program, but it's on the "friends" page. It's called Power Archiver, and you're probably right that it should also go onto the programs page. I'm not sure I like the idea of split files as I have a faster connection. I think it would just be better to allow download managers to download and then most people would be happy. Actually I would say that the best way to do it is to host the files on FTP and configure the FTP to only accept 1 connection for each IP. In that way you protect from leeching but stilll allow download managers. Kosta, tell me what you think.

If you download Mozilla FireFox 0.9 you do have a download manager as it is included in the browser. You still have to get it in one dial-up session though (you can't continue a download you started in a previous dial-up, but you can pause/continue the download within the dial-up session)

Check it out here: http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

The download is rather large (4.7 MB) but I'm glad I have it now and don't use IE no more now ;)

I didn't expect to see 4.7mb as a rather large download after I downloaded a 500mn demo of a new game :D

heh heh

well I was using the same terminology as vippin who says 3.40 MB is very big. If 3.40 is very big, the least I could say was that 4.70 was rather large, no? ... ;)

That aside I think it's pretty big in size too for an internet browser, especially if you have to pull it through a 56K, but after you have downloaded it you have an integrated download manager so it is certainly worth the download... :P
