View Full Version : Game You Hate That Everyone Else Loves

Well, we have the opposite... So why not? No flaming just because someone doesn't like your over-exposed franchise, okay? :bleh:
Probably the number one game I can't stand that almost EVERY game playing human or robot or intelligent cow on the planet loves is StarCraft. I can't stand having to click my fingers off just so everyone else doesn't gang up on me before I've mined one crystal, and I can't stand how Blizzard just mines other sci-fi creations like Warhammer 40,000 and Starship Troopers and everyone hails them as geniuses. You say "I think the Terrans were inspired by the marines from Starship Troopers," to a bunch of StarCraft fans, and they want your blood.
The rabid fanbase probably makes me hate it more than I normally would, (anime is a similar case) but without them, I would still not be able to stand the "action strategy" of StarCraft, it's annoying, pop gameplay. The units aren't that special.
ARRRGH. When will this "classic" GO AWAY?

i think it's a bit overrated too, but the reason it's so popular is that blizzard are experts at balancing multiple races (even more so in WC3) while making them distinct and fun. they also make top-notch singleplayer storylines (even if the missions get a bit samey and the last missions fall into the C&C trap of just giving the enemy all the technology and a huge lead).

There are a few...
I'm not really sure why, but I always hated Duke Nukem - I got phisicaly sick playing that game (I generaly dislike FPS, although some - like Bridge Commander I played and quite enjoyed). It's just a matter of taste really.

World of Warcraft. A lot of people I know are playing it. Personally I think its a waste of money on a game that isn't all that pretty.
As for any other games... Everquest, I guess.

Halo 2, I don't get it, every time I look at this game I see "bland" written all over it, I can't find the special charm that makes it appealling to so many people, I play something like Half Life 2, and expect with this game's hype and ratings that it would be just as immersive and fun. It wasn't the world was hardly as interactive as many other shooters, the creators thought that pushing around chairs and dropping marines off platforms was enough.
Blah, I hate it.

Diablo 2 has a very good system, but become very boring after few days of gameplay. :tomato: When time to next level is aproximetly two days I need another motivation than level-up.In most RPGs I found it in story or sub-quests,but this was missing in Diablo. And killing Baal twenty times, too see if he dont drop at least something usable this time is just boring...
However I like mods for Diablo 2 (Zy-El for example)...

I have a feeling this isn't going to over too well but...
Final Fantasy. All of them. Especially 7+. The first six (actually I've never played II or III) had their moments. In fact I thought six was a lot of fun. But #7 killed it for me. That thing was an overlong, boring, poorly translated piece of hogwash. The cut scenes were cool though.
Just so I don't seem like one of those crazy Square-bashers, let me add that I liked Chrono Trigger a lot.

I think in regards to Final Fantasy 7 it does seem to be hated quite a bit, reason the amount of fan boys that praise the game for being the greatest Final Fantasy of them all, when in fact for pretty much a lot of them, that was their first Final Fantasy they probably played, not saying it is for everyone, but for some.
I've played Final Fantasy 7 I thought it was an above average game, definitely ranks on my all time great games that I've played near the top for sure, but I can understand why it receive all the hate.

Well, for me this are the most today's FPS & War games, like Counterstrike, Battlefield and all the followings, Metal Gear Solid etc. etc. I simply can't stand this chewn out idea and stories of war and bad terrorists and all. Although I liked the earlier FPS's, like Quake, Hexen 2, Doom 2, Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior and more. Back then they were more groundbreaking for their time and interesting than now...

Really? Then in order to find a game that EVERYone else loves, I change my answer to Metroid Prime. I know that everyone tells me how brilliant it is, but I found it to be really lifeless. Maybe the idea is that the player is alone on an alien world and supposed to be lost and confused, but I didn't care for it much at all.

ive got many that i just hate...
World Of Warcraft - its a joke, your paying about $90 (australian) for it, then another $15 (or even more) just to play the stupid thing, and it feels like the biggest everquest/runescape rip-off.
actually...anything by blizzard i just hate, warcraft - boring, diablo - boring, their just a crap company in my opinion, if only good ones like Westwood and Interplay were still around =(
But if theres one game that i hate even more than world of gaycraft, its Command And Conquer : Generals...this game, its completely disgraced the command and conquer series, i mean...3D!, what the hell!, rule number 1, a strategy game must NOT be made in a 3d engine, its as simple as that, they all turn out slow, boring, and look terrible.

Pah! What about Total Annihilation, Warzone 2100, Sacrifice, Battlezone (oh what a game that was! - is it abandoned yet?) Black & White and a few others? They all rocked and are 3D. I happen to like WC3, and I'd play WoW all the time if it weren't for the ongoing costs (bah! humbug) and Diablo 2 is indeed dull once you've finished it once in SP (similarly for its mods) but much more fun on battle.net.
I always hated counter-strike too, but I've been playing CS:Source and i actually do like it, although it can be incredibly frustrating when you keep unloading a hole clip into someone only to have them kill you with an incredibly unlikely headshot, from 10 miles away with a teeny pistol.

I can't stand really any of the online world games myself either.
You just kind of grind and grind to master your skills, and then they really usually don't have anything to do after that. I hear the news ones have or will change that, but in the old days everyone could pretty much make the same thing so crafting was useless, and I got sick of killing helpless woodland creatures for food and hides all day.
I guess it was too much like a regular job..except for the killing part of course
Halo
Halo 2
Halo's sequals
All this I do (and will) hate. Just the hype surrounding it kills me on the inside. And Bungie made such nice games before so (Marathon series, Myth series, Oni, Pathways into Darkness.)......

Adventure games, all of them. Especially those adventure games you need to think 3 hours before finnaly finding the answer which was keeping you from advancing the storyline.
I like to read stories and I love good stories in games. But having to walk back and forth in the whole game only to find out that you forgot or missed a critical object only because you were sick of clicking everywhere to be sure you did not miss something is really not my kind of fun.

Well I've never played Halo 2, so for all I know, it could be the greatest game of all time. As for the original, the reason could be that about 2/3of the way through the game Bungie decides to rehash the exact same map over and over again, until you lower the dificulty level just so you can finish the darned thing quickly.
Multiplayer's fun though.
I'd have to put my vote down against Myst as well. Way slow and boring. For some reason I always disliked Doom too. Everyone else seemed to eat it up when it first came out, but it's no good in my eyes. :not_ok:

I don't despise the first one, it was original at that time, you had the freedom to ride all over the town, entertained me for quite some time...
The second one was boring, entertained me for 20 seconds...
Then came the third one it was cool because it was 3D, and entertained me for an hour...
Then came out copy's, VC and SA, whose innovative features entertained for about 20 minutes...

Easily (in my opinion). It's just not fun to me and the story is pretty cliched and dull. It's a tad sad when the best thing you can gather from what the fanboys say is that "OMG MULTIPLAYER RULEZ", to me multiplayer should come second. People would then go on to whine that you can only do single player once through and only get feeling out of it, and to that I'd answer "Only if it isn't a well put together single player".
Deus Ex and both System Shocks easily destroy Halo.

Deus Ex - This game has to be the biggest pile of cr*p ever to have been released. It has nervewreckingly lame game play. The combat system is so lame, that it cannot be described, And the AI is simply just stupid. The storyline, well atleast the very little bit that I painfully played through was horrible. And what is so special about all the abilities you have in the game, their all ripped off from elsewhere anyway.
And yet, I keep meeting people praising this game as simply brilliant. Am I the only one to see the rubbishness in it?
Diablo II and almost all other Hack and slash games - I mean, I don't know what anyone sees in these games. The gameplay is as simple as, click mouse button, wait for monsters to die and run away if to little health. There is absolutely no skill requirement to these games.
And now, all of the MMOG's are in this genre, like WoW and others.

I really dislike many games many people seem to love
The Sims series
My own life is much more exciting then these games. Maybe other people just live boring lives?
Halo series
Very average First Person Shooters. Not really that bad, until you start counting all the crazy people who say its the greatest game in the world.
Homeworld series
Pretty to look at, but very simple and easy to beat, with not alot of tactical choices. Although some mods that change the gameplay make it much more fun.
Grand Theft Auto series
The first ones were kind of boring, but I guess fun(If you like running over people)
The 3rd one and its expansion were just horribly boring to me. I prefer some level of realism in games like this. The game physics , bad story and repetitive nature of the game made me hate it.
Most of the Final Fantasy series
The first few were fine as dungeon crawler types, but after VI there is very little redeeming quality left in the series to me.
Most of the Command and Conquer series
The games are essentially exactly the same as time goes on. So very little innovation over so long, especially when the gameplay is so simple, is a bad thing. And Generals was just plain horrible.
Doom 3
Boring, easy, not scary.
Half Life 2
Other then my eternal hatred against Steam, Half Life 2 is okay as a first person shooter. All the people saying its so great make me dislike it strongly though.
Morrowind
Shallow NPCs, shallow quests, shallow game world in general. Severely limited character interaction, almost non existant dialogue, weak combat system. Some of the mods and the last expansion fix some aspects, but they don't fix enough for me to like it.
Neverwinter Nights
Very boring, VERY ugly (How do you make something so ugly with modern graphics? I still play Wasteland and think it looks fine!) the singleplayer is very bad, being almost entirely hack and slash. Thats a problem with alot of D20 games I've found. Just wish this game had more depth, but it didn't. Some of the user created mods are very good, but looking at the game for too long hurt my eyes.
System Shock 1
I played System Shock 2 before System Shock 1. Everything good about it is better in System Shock 2. Since System Shock 2 is so much better, I just could never make myself like System Shock 1 very much, which is odd, because I love System Shock 2 so much.
Xcom Apocalypse
Maybe I'm just afraid of change? To me, the best Xcom game is the first one. Apocalypse just kind of annoyed me with all these little bugs and problems.
Arcanum
I love the boys at Troika, I love indepth Role playing games, I love the steampunk setting. What I don't love is a half finished buggy and imbalanced combat system and so many dungeons that require its use. Please forgive me Troika! I'm sorry!
Wow, this is a really negative first post.

Day of Defeat is about as realistic as Call of Duty. That is to say, not at all.
Maybe its more realistic then the original Half Life, but to call it "Very realistic" would be untrue. If you want a realistic shooter for the Second Great War, try Red Orchestra or Brothers in Arms.

And now, all of the MMOG's are in this genre, like WoW and others.
deus ex is better than a lof of games now in every aspect except gfx. diablo 2 is a good game but gets boring.
one of the most overrated game series EVER is the FF series (its has to be said)
see, i never liked DoD but much prefer Sven Co-Op and Natural Selection (or i would if i wasn't getting damn reliable channel overflows every time i try to play. stupid HL!)

I always think Diablo II is not as simply as most people thought. Sure, point and click is easy, but would you prefer navigating 10 menus just to hit your enemy? The simply interface is what made the game good.
Planning your charater also require thinking, especially with patch 1.10. I have seen many people play their charaters until level 70s, only to restart when they find out that their charater is not strong enough to take on hell difficulty.

Infact around lvl 70 diablo just stop motivate me.Why should I play it again with just stronger monster and nothing new?To play it two days to get a level. To get super-unique item which chance to drop is 1 : 1000000000000?
And now, when I have finally beaten Diablo on Hell, I have no reason to play it again...

Yeah I know, but I'm not sure how to get around it, since I quite like steam otherwise and my HL version would be too old without it. I don't understand why they haven't fixed this bug yet - it doesn't happen to HL2 or any Source MODs. Grrr.

I cannot understand why halo is so much loved.... The graphics suck., there is no new features... (I would say vehicles but Renegade had better stuff then this.) That and it was on the worst system ever. I don't see why people hate duke3d so much. Was pretty funny and fun game. Ahh and DOD non beta series... I miss DoD beta... 1.3b was the one I started with.. you could run around, scoped, and still be accurate! I remeber having good times on dod_hill. 3.1b was also a good one, OVerlord and the para_ maps ROCKED!!! Overlord actully made you feel like you were on theb beaches of Normandy. The new one dod_charlie sucks. You can run across the beach in like 3 seconds...
Yeah, Halo - I mean 1.) Energy Weapons are incredibly unsatisfying and feel like they have no effect and 2.) You have a stupid energy-shield which means you take no damage! Argh!
Aside from that, almost every game from the last few years - I don't know why the companies decided to wreck the games market, but I'm sure it had to do with piles and piles of money... :(
About Neverwinter - the game really only works well with the fan-made mods; they drastically changed my opinion of it. (esp. "Dreamcatcher" - far better than the actual game)
But my main gripe: Medal of Honour / Call of Duty (Basically the same game) So so linear and feelingless... I hate it so much! Why hasn't this genre moved on from SS2/Deus Ex? It feels like it's gone backwards! No game *ever* should have a single "use" key which will do your thinking for you!

I'm not a big fan of games like Mist, Sentinel and the last Gabriel Knight where you wonder around dozens of screens with nothing to do, nothing to interact with. They have a sprawling, lonesome feel about them. And despite the beauty of the surroundings, it gets boring. I liked the older games like the Kyrandia, Zork, Kings Quest series where there was something to do in nearly every screen/location. That made each new location a joy to discover because there was some magic/action/puzzle/person about to be encountered.

the halo games make good multiplayers and the person who said that energy shields are stupid, they should try playing halo 2 1 on 1 with a friend, no shields active, pistols + energy swords, no regenerating ammo, no grenades whatsoever, no overshields or camo, no vehicles and a small map like beaver creek. then you will apperciate why halo 2 is good :D. as for the sims, i have played it and i initially liked it but i just got bored of it and it has just become another ea cashcow.

Thief was so awesome, especially when you played it on hard. There was nothing worse than a graveyard or crypt mission on hard. All that zombie moaning while poor Garret was creaping around and trying to find "his" loot. I remember loading up on flashbombs every time I had even a remote possibility to encounter zombies. Don't knock it until you've tried it.
-re-edit- I've really gotta read the topic more carefully... the games that I hate that everyone else loves have gotta be Civilization and the Diablo series. I don't hate the gameplay nor the concept, it's the huge amount of time that I lose to these games that makes me hate them.

Yeah, I don't like this two either but i forgot about them. Neverwinter is very boring, each chapter looks the same (three or for locations where you have to find something), there are changed D&D rules (like this stupid items you can wear only if reached some level), game have too many fights and you xp only from fighting. It's not a cRPG, it's a more boring sister of Diablo or Dungeon Siege. Morrowind also was very boring for me. The action was too slow, and the world was to big. I don't like games which I must play four months non-stop to finish them. One month is a good lenght :D

Must be the single most worthless game i've ever played, either contiously or by accident.
:apple: <--- even THIS is more intresting..
Either you use the BFG-sniper, or you use an AK of some sort.... then what?
Oh... and the cheaters... gotta love them. Pathetic.
Even the StrikeForce-mod for UT is better... atleast Shotgun and machineguns are viable options, and snipers are balanced into the game.

Looks like you never played Halo 1 or 2 on any higher difficulty then Easy..
They last few levels on Legendery, and you'll appriciate the Shield, and leanr how to use the energy-weapons.. they are good when you know HOW to use it.
(drewls at the thought of last time he blasted his friends in Halo2 with dual needlers)

hmm, i didnt mind counterstrike back in the 1.3 days, but the newer versions have 2 big problems with them,
nothing different
95% of the people who play it are terrible at it, so theres no real challenge for me, then there was CS:Source, one of the maps i played of it i got 30-1, just boring...
------
yeah, GTA3 is probably the best one there is, Vice City and San Andreas are cheap rip-off's...not to mention the fact that they have the same graphics (slightly tweaked)

hmmm games that i hate Halo is one of them just a normal fps with great graphics without a good story and CS is boring and the FIFA footie games makes my stomache vomit (i can´t see anything about 22 men running around 90 minuttes +- the game time) so no i am not into the footie games either.

I don't like FF series either, after I've played Suikoden , I thought it was great, then I played the second one, it was much similar, then I played FF7 it was ok too, but already a bit boring, all these Japanese Rpg's seem alike to me, and they're freakin annoying with their feminised characters!
DeathDude

Well in terms for Final Fantasy I feel the series has gone downhill since 7, 11 may have helped the series a little but not a lot, if 12 doesn't turn out to be such a resounding success, I feel it could be the end of the series,
As for the feminised characters I read an article that in Japan more women play RPG's then men and that's why you see a lot of these feminised characters which I despise playing, just look at FF 9 with the main character, ahhh.

The game I hate the most that everybody else seem to love is definitly Counter Strike. The game is dumb and the community sucks, imo.
It could've been a better game, if it was a bit more realistic, a bit more free of cheaters, and was only allowed for the age of 18 or upwards <_<

Especially Quake III. Some people say it was the best one, but to me it is just another arena game. Sure, even if it was first, it wasn't as good as the clones that came out right after it.
Isnt that what makes a good game?
If clones are made straight after the game comes out it must be good. Actully no we are talking about quake?

just wanna say the ''covenant'' means in english a sort of a monastery...and the aliens are really attached to their religion in the game, the prophets of the game are truth, forgiveness, regret and couple others...(most of them are christian/jewish values) Halo which will bring upon the world the FLOOD which refers to Noah's Arc..... so on and so on.....

I think Wolfenstein: ET would be great for you, it' team based, so without a good strategy you can't win, it's still fast and you can sit at machineguns and stuff just like in UT's Onslaught, but with even deeper tactics, because you can choose between a few classes(it's still an FPS), but most important of all it's totally free, but there is no single-player...

ET it's a really wonderfull game, but I wouldn't say that you have to use any tactic. In clan matches ofcourse, it's necessary, but in ffa everyone do what he wants to. But Marek, you should try it anyway. It's the online shooter I've ever played.

I really, really hate Halo 2. Sorry, fanboys, but a campaign with no actual ending?
Survey says: Load of balls.
I also dislike - Everquest. Reason why? The people who play it are annoying, you have to grind at it for ages and it has about 10 skins or something ridiculous. Everone looks the same, everyone acts the same and that's because their minds have been SuBtLy AlTeReD!
*must... grind.... must.... call.... others.... noobs....*
Not only that but it costs a lot to buy and even more to play (like ?100 a year). It's not worth it when there are better alternatives.
Ooh, ooh, also I dislike Deus Ex: Invisible War. Reason Why? It removed just about anything that kept Deus Ex cool. Deus Ex was pure genius, it was a game to get nervous about, a game to fall in love with. Deus Ex: Invisible War took away that feel to the game and replaced it with a simple RPG/Shooter.
i haven't played eq yet but halo 2 makes a good multiplayer (if you have a few friends who like to play it that is :P) so don't be so quick to bring it down. i must agree with you on DX:IW though (it came with my xbox and i completed it quickly) and i have to say its poor compared to the original on pc (PS2 conversion sucked balls)

Everything from iD after Romero left, so everything after Quake. The fast gameplay of Quake was totally fscked up, the level designers didn't have JRs insight into flow, and firing fear walked the corridors.

It is for stress busting. Who could resist killing about a jillion cows from Hell with a chaingun? Not me!

The Twisted Metal series. Back when that came out the 1st and 2nd games were touted as genius, then the 3rd and 4th came out and were supposed to be only subpar, then finally when the PS2 was released they came out with Twisted Metal: Black and it was supposed to be incredible.
I REALLY tried to enjoy the Twisted Metal series, I enjoy a LOT of the games in this thread that people don't like, my gaming tastes encompass so many fields... but this one didn't do it for me. All it was was a bunch of cars shooting each other and a weird clown dude.

Twisted Metal World Tour(second in the series i believe) was a hit at that time, both on console and on PC, and i still see it as one of the best car shoot'em ups ever

Can I give some advice here?
I really struggled with Warcraft III as well...
Playing against the computer on Normal was just impossible...
What I eventually did was I played a two player game against the pc and specified that its race would be the same as mine, whatever your favourite is, mine is Undead...
Then I played the game and got seriously trounced, as I expected to do...
Then on the sumary screen at the end I selected to save replay.
Then go back to the menu and choose to view the replay.
You can switch which player you watch in the replay and I found it extremely informative to watch how the pc does it.
Take notes and then try to copy what the pc does step by step in a new game against an easy opponent and you will find that you would probably win...
I played a 4 player game with three easy opponents and won...
Last weekend I almost beat a normal level opponent, almost...

The campaign mode is crap though, but it does have good differentiation and balance between the races (like WC) - the expansion pack's adding the Imperial Guard as fully playable, complete with many a big tank.

What was the point of the creatures there? I never used them more than the basic tutorials in the first map. Most of the time it wasn't captured, it was leashed to my temple.
Whenever I tried to teach the creature anything, it's alignment turned to even more evil, tho I was trying to be a good god.

You were prolly teaching it the wrong things, I had a godly cow when I finished the game once and a evil leopord or something the second time around.

30-03-2005, 01:08 AM
Tried to teach him the spells. The damn monkey never used them.
When I saw it picking someone up, I'd order to put it down and go eat some regular food. It ended up picking up people just to throw them away and then getting the whitey conscience to tell me "your creature is hungry blah blah" every 10 minutes, even though it had a mountain of food at the temple entrance.
It felt playful nearly every second. I gave him the beach ball, he threw it to the middle of the village.
On a sidenote, I confess I loved to fly through a village where the creature was, listening "ahhh", "help", "save us" and alike. :)
Marek
30-03-2005, 06:09 AM
Monkeys don't really want to eat regular food...
Neither does the Cat.
You need to give them more fish than anything else.
At first they try to eat people but you have to slap them around quite a lot in order to teach them not to do it. I've actually slapped my monkey around, , so badly that he's almost died a few times...
When you see your creature eating the right food or casting a useful spell, don't hesitate, zoom in and stroke his tummy and pat him gently on the head...
It takes them quite a while to learn spells, but the monkey learns spells faster.
With a little bit of patience, your creature will eventually become your greatest asset.
My monkey ran around watering trees and crops all the time and he would also go fetch trees for me and drop them in the town centre.
Then he would also cast the wood spell into the town centre as well...
My monkey rocks :ok:

I played as "darkest dark" and my animal was really quite a help.It really isnt that big problem to teach it things(and as I figured out later,Tiger is dumbiest and in guide they really warn you from chosing it becouse he "wont be able to learn spells or even simpliest actions.... "
I never changed my Tiger for other animal....

My godly cow was so interested in changing people to breeders that at the end of a level my main town would be infested with villagers.
I kept him healthy and strong by making him carry a boulder around the island every 30 minutes or so.
Only agressive spell he knew he was fireball, and he seemed to like to use it on enemy granaries.
