I was a fan of KOEI games in my youth, even downloaded the first version of ROTK a few years back to play again. They managed to apply what essentially was a similar system of play in a range of historical period to (usually) great result. I think apart from Gemfire (??) and Uncharted Water the rest of their games were above average.
Do a search from their games and try it out for yourself.

Sorry about that, ROTK = Romance of the Three Kingdom....
Their first game was Nobunaga's Ambition I believe. There was Bandit Kings of Ancient China, Genghis Khan and one more based on Napolean (cannot remember the name now).
The games were very popular in Singapore in the eighties but was never big in the US most likely due to the historical background that the games were based on.
Genre of Game : War/Strategy (Hex map battle)

Some games from KOEI:
Genghis Khan 1+2
Nobunaga's Ambition 1+2
Romance of the 3 Kingsdoms 1+...
I never really played them. But I think these are best known ones.

Dynasty warriors are pretty good games. They get boring after a while but have pretty good replay value.

Romance of 3 kingdoms are strategy games for those who are not sure about ancient china famous warlords who conqure lands through war, politics and recruitin special abilities generals, advisors etc. Its quite a long n fun game. Try it for those who like strategy games.

Liberty or Death was kinda sub-par for KOEI. It was one of the games they did to try and grab more of the US market while still making the titles over in Japan. They used the same engine, but didn't try personalizing the game in any way for European history or flavor.
I think Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Nobunaga's Ambition, Genghis Khan and Bandit Kings of Ancient China were far better. That's also true of Balor of the Evil Eye, their last US and PC-based title, which actually used an American development team working in tandem with the Japanese one, and was quickly killed without advertising when the administration decided to fold its tents.

They also make P.T.O. (I think) which is a World War II Pacific naval war simulation. And they make the absolutely wonderful Winning Post series, which as far as I know has only been released in the US once but is annually updated in Japan. You all have no idea how much I desire a new US release of that game.

Why is it funny?
Romance of the Three Kingdoms 3 is arguably the best of the PC-based ones in the series. It's got reasonably attractive graphics, a nice mix of features, and a relatively strong AI. #1 has perhaps the best AI performance but weak graphics, while #2 has the poorest AI. #4 is good, too--it was the last of the group made for the PC--but if you got an extremely intelligent advisor, you couldn't lose.
At the moment, I've got RotK3 on my computer, but haven't started up a game. X2: The Threat has just arrived, and I'll be playing that once I get back from a 5-day trip to Boston to see my wife, who's on a job. :)

How about Genghis Khan II?
I bought that game ages over a decade ago and hardly ever played it. The box with the floppies sits in my closet as I speak. I've always wanted to play the ROTK and other KOEI games but the learning curve prevented me. Hmm...I even hear the ROTK games on PS2 are pretty good as well.

How about Genghis Khan II?
It's a good game, though I think the simulation loses some of its charm when they try to expand it to include all of Europe.

Uncharted Waters 2 is quite good, pity the third one is not released in english, as for the romance of the three kingdom series, does anyone know of any plan from koei to release it in english (for the PC not PS2)?
