Anyone recommend any good Amiga games to try? It was one of the better systems in its day for graphics and music, and its no surprise it was the main video editing machine back in the day with Video Toaster.

Since I don't know too much about Amiga's I thought I'd check out the Amiga emulator and try out some games.

Thanks in advance.

Dear God, where to start? There were so many great games in that time... I would advise you to got to http://www.back2roots.org/ and browse the large collection they have there, with screenshots and ratings, then just pick some and try em out. :)

PS: Amiga will never die! :D

Thanks for the suggestions. Nice site and I'll try out those games.

I tried Disposable Hereos and was nicely surprised at how nice the graphics were for a game over 10 years old The amiga sure did have some nice graphic capabilities for its time. I dowloaded some other games but it said I can't boot them. These games were "hard drive" games so do I have to somehow install them virtually on a virtual hard drive?

The regular floppy games work fine. I'm just a newbie when it comes to amiga. Or is there an amiga hard drive image I can get or create?

Turrican II

Don't know where you can find it, BUT YOU MUST PLAY IT.

Great frickin' game.

Try Amiga Games (http://www.Amigagames.com) they got good stuff there

Edit: LOL, Turrican is on the top downloaded list, you can find it there.

its was mostly lightwave that made 3d so great on the amiga.. but the videotoaster obviously helped it be useful for professional studios to make stuff quicker.
i remember using real3d on my a600, and you could watch each line being sl....oow...ly... rendered

I agree fully with JJXB. Defender Of The Crown and Wings were the two best games on the Amiga.

Have either of you played Turrican? One of the best Amiga games along with those two.

Did you dislike Turrican in particular, or the whole shoot'em up genre?

My favority Amiga-only game would have to be Ambermoon. Everything about that game was beautiful. :)

Turrican 2 you piggies, first one sucked, the second one was a blast.

Turrican 2 was better, but not by much.

Depends on what kind of shooter. I like vert shooters, like Raiden Triad and Ikaruga, but I don't like horizontal shooters, Zero wing and Turrican, as much. I don't dislike them, just have a generally low opinion until prooven otherwise.

How about Blackthorne? Like that?

There were a few PC ports on the Amiga, they usually sucked but a few were actually better than the originals.

Played it on the 32X, loved the Hell out of it, but I don't call that a shooter. More of an action/adventure.

Shooters are scroll-screen with lots of enemies, big end-level bosses, etcetera. Blackthorne, Flashback, those are A/As.

It was a side scrolling shooter, it's viewpoint was the side, and you shot things, it's like Altered Beast or Golden Axe, Contra.

:rifle: Pow, that's the essence of the genre.

Wrong. Blackthorne never scrolled, you went from one screen to the next.

And you never shot things in Golden Axe, unless you count the magic.

But who cares? Genre's are so fekkin' subjective at this point. I've seen DOOM described as an "Adventure game".

Celtic Legends. Strategy game. Real nice. Looking for Celtic Legends was what brought me to this site. (Didn't find it, but it was so nice here, I decided to stay).

And Wing Commander, o' course.

Yes, get Celtic Legends, great game.

Did Doom come out for the Amiga by the way?

Not officially, but after the code was released by ID, there were some loaders that could run the game, but I never tried it, as you still needed the original files to play it.
