Blizzard have hinted that they're updating Warcraft 1 and 2 to work better on modern operating systems.

At Blizzcon, when a fan asked if Blizzard could possibly fix the old Warcraft games up to work on modern PCs, J. Allen Brack (WoW production director) responded "So, we actually have a guy on our team — actually several guys on our team — who are actually working on a side project to do something like that in some form or fashion. We’re fans of Warcraft 1, Warcraft 2, Warcraft 3, and we’d love to replay those games for sure".

There's not really much more information beyond that. They don't say whether or not these updated versions will need Battle.net, or if they're doing any other work on them.

After "ported" Populous and Wasteland I bet for another "DOSBox-embedded" game.

Both Warcraft games work seamlessly in DOSBox, so there's hardly any need to modify them in any way.

I guess if they still have the source code handy they could - theoretically - update Warcraft II to include some of the Battle.net Edition enhancements like the food counter on the sidebar and improved unit group control, but that's purely optional. Apart from that, I consider the DOS version of Warcraft II superior because of CD Audio music that is of better quality than 22kHz WAV files (some of which are truncated BTW) found in Battle.net Edition.

It would also be very nice if they released the two games for free now, like they did with Blackthorne recently.
