I haven't played this game much, but I think you have to let the others wreck each other, getting involved as little as possible until the end. :p You can't possibly wreck more than one other car without wrecking yours. It doesn't matter if you hit or get hit, the damage seems to be the same. And when you hit another car's side with your front, it looks good but you're doing him a favor, since the front is always the first to go, and the side hardly ever gets hit.

The object of the game isn't just wrecking the other cars but also getting as much points as possible. You get points by hitting the other cars so that they spin around. The larger the angle of the spin the more points you get (max. 360 degrees).
You don't have to hit the cars at full speed to make them spin, a little push is often enough. Also, driving in reverse from time to time helps to keep your car from breaking down.
IIRC, I won this game by points:

Yeah, Japo, I was thinking that as I was looking at my footage.
Good to know, Zirkoni. Little pushes and 360s. I believe I have the more barbaric approach, haha.
So that's another reason not to hit anyone in the middle side, you have to make them turn... :p
Although when a game has to be played differently to win by points or to get the impression of winning, I usually prefer the latter. It has nothing to do with this game, but for example Civilization. There were many exploits to get the highest score early, but they weren't the ways to enjoy the game most and specially to create what a person would call the best civilization or empire.
