How do you attack in this game? They explained it in the beginning, but I accidentally clicked the little window away and now I can't recall it. Can ready my weapon, but don't know how to swing it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's very easy, actually.

Use the F-key to ready and put away your weapon.
To attack you simply press the left mouse button to attack. Hold the button down for a slower more powerful strike (much like in Ultima Underworld).

That is for a standard attack (a chop). To make a sideways swipe attack as you move sideways, or you can make a piercing lounge if you move forward just as you attack.

Or, in the setting you can select "Use best attack", whick will always use the best kind of attack depending on the weapon you wield by simply clicking once (or hold-and-release).

Have fun...

It only does that when you're facing something living, I assume, as when I acquired the dagger in the beginning of the game and tried that out, it didn't do anything...

No, the visual attack will occur whether there's something in front of you to slice and dice, or not. You just click F to ready/unready a weapon, then press your left mouse button to do the attack. The LMB is an activator, so if you press R to bring up your hands to cast a spell, hit the LMB and the spell will be cast.

Oops, seems like I reconfigured my keys so Return was attack instead of left mousebutton

And if you want to add a whole new depth to morrowind try out the Combat Advanced mod. I myself don't use it since I use the "use best attack" option, but if you don't it adds a whole new level to combat moves and death animations, and also bullettime (or something like it)

Oh, and also download a housing mod like Morrowind Abodes, so you will have your own little home with lots of storage space for all the artifacts you will find on your journey. :)

Hell, if we're going to get into MW mods, we can talk for hours. I'm running 200+ on my PC, and there are more than 4000 available, currently. :D They run the gamut: bug fixes, utilities, tweaks, ease-of-operation add-ons, quests, races, items, merchants, dungeons, etc. There's even a mod that lets you breed horses (with four attributes) and hire trainers to develop mounts, and another mod that let's you control all aspects of running a mining company.

I suggest checking out Morrowind Summit (which has a database that's searchable by mod category) and TESmods (which provides a lot of detail) for mods.

I wouldn't suggest going to Morrowind Summit. Sure there are a lot of mods there, but the quality isn't guaranteed. I suggest going to mod threads on the forum or you could visit Telesphoros' list of mods (http://www.mwmythicmods.com/telesphoros.htm) it contains most quality mods.

With respect, I can't agree with that. Morrowind Summit brought in a large, talented team middle of last year to go through every mod in its database. They've added evaluations and important notes that you can see in describing the mods, such as "unfinished mod" or "GMSTs present, no readme file"--which other mod site does that? And they always tested their mods, from day one, for viruses.

TESmods is great, and I recommend them, too, especially because they add on more new mods than Summit. But they have no playtesting team, and hardly any player comments available for viewing (which again, Summit does).

Ah but just because it works doesn't mean its any good
It could work perfectly but a whole lot of mods just add uber-weapons and stuff like that
You actually have to sift through thousands of mods to find good ones, while Telesphoros just sums up the most favourite mods (I don't even run a fraction of the mods on Telesphoros's list)

Plus Morrowind Summit's team could hardly be called a team, I was there, there were problems from day one I left shortly after they all started complaining and the teamleaders started fighting. This is also the reason a lot of people on the official forums don't really like morrowind summit

Game came with a few mods. Two or three're translations, one's the battlemod (which lets the game crash whenever I try... need to run some extra executable for it), one that gives you "A good place to stay", near the alchemist in Balmora, one to make the bodies look better, one that shows the actual names on the signposts and one 'bout NPC - locks and NPC - schedules, whatever they do. Explanation's in Italian, and I don't understand that.

ah yes, those are the essential mods, especially Better Bodies and Better Heads.
I suggest you also try and get hold of some texture-improving mod, there are a few of them, some realistic, some happy/colourful/fantasy, and some dark/dreary, its not an easy choice. I use "Morrowind Visual Pack XT" by Qarl

TESmods is run by a team, not Telesphoros, and it will accept *any mod at all.* There are several mods up there that don't belong on any boards--but you'll find 'em there, because if you send it in with your comments, it gets listed. Where Telesphoros gets involved is when he sees a new mod mentioned in the ES mod forums that he likes; but literally everything submitted is put up on TESmods.

For example, a few weeks back someone submitted a mod that made gold look better. Then, a couple of days later, they realized it didn't work well, and offered a new version, with an apology. Then, a day later, they offered a file they'd accidentally left out of the second upload. With a description on TESmods that was one long run-on sentence, and nearly impossible to understand. Telesphoros never asked for any of the three. They were submitted, and TESmod's admin's simply scanned 'em for viruses, and put 'em for grabs.

Morrowind Summit used to accept anything, but has shifted to a policy of sifting through new mods. So it's older stuff in the database includes the good, the bad and the ugly--though you can often distinguish which is which by reading the user comments posted there. While there are the usual trolls around, there are also some excellent reviews attached to quite a few mods.

It's kinda ironic, but the compliment you chose to pay to TESmods actually is true--for Summit.

Plus Morrowind Summit's team could hardly be called a team, I was there, there were problems from day one I left shortly after they all started complaining and the teamleaders started fighting. This is also the reason a lot of people on the official forums don't really like morrowind summit

It's your privilege to badmouth people that aren't here to defend themselves, and claim you saw it all. But surely you can find other things to say about the Summit team regarding the quality of their work, than retailling gossip about how they behaved among themselves. All I can do is judge by the site results, and the Summit team (however you may feel about them) is doing a fine job labeling plenty of old mods for content. And as for the official forums, I've been a daily member for over a year. The only complaint I've ever read or can find when consulting the ES search database (when a complaint is mentioned at all) is that Summit uses FilePlanet as a library for its mods. There's public access to FilePlanet, though; people just ignore the small print all too easily. ;)

If you find one, I'd be interested too. ;) I've been browsing the forums to see if there's a way to make the font larger, but it seems it's not possible.

I'm guessing you can tamper with the .ini file, and I think there is way by using ~console, hmm I'll have to look into it...

What about lower it to 1024 x 768?
The text WILL become larger and Morrowind will be still worth to see

As cheap as it is, even the GOTY version (with both Tribunal and Bloodmoon), what's stopping you from buying it? It's being offered new for $20, and Amazon has used copies from $15. I suspect if you search around, you can find it for $10 or less. That's dirt cheap, especially when you consider all the mod add-ons that turn it into a 200-300 hour game.

It's got enormous loading times, though. Here, it can sometimes take a minute to pull up the inventory. Terribly, terribly painful.

Havell
27-02-2005, 03:12 PM
Not on mine, it takes about a minute to load the game initially and then about 30 seconds to load anyt new palces I go into. The inventory comes up instantly or in a couple of seconds though, I think there must be someting wrong with yours.

WildZeppelin
28-02-2005, 02:09 AM
wow, I guess I'm really fortunate. Morrowind for me just hiccups between some parts. Most any other occassion is instantaneous! And here I am seriously unhappy about my current video card.... ulp!

A lot depends on your memory. When I was initially running the game on a 1.3 gHz CPU with 256 MB RAM, it took forever to play. Now I'm on a 3 gHz CPU with 1 GB RAM, and it runs like a dream--even though I've got 200+ mods going, as well.

Kon-Tiki
28-02-2005, 03:05 AM
Well, 1,6GHz, overclocked to 2GHz (by accident :D ) with 256Mb. I guess it's the Ram then. It really is a pain in the behind, the way it's slow here. A shame, otherwise the game wouldn't be boring as hell :D It looks promising and alot of fun, but if you have to do more waiting than anything else...

If you have a TFT monitor with a native resolution of say 1280x1024, then lowering that resolution results in a blurry picture. At least on my TFT that's the case.

As for Morrowind, there's a fps otimizer around, which I find really does help with the framerate. And more RAM is always a good against loading times. ;)

Even when I was still using my Athlon 900 I had not problems with loading. How much memory do you have? With enough free memory Morrowind was surprisingly gentle with it's requirements.

Does anyone have the PMB? It is a Private Mobile Base. It lets you fly to whatever town you want. If you are a mage, just set your recall inside, and viola! Here is a link to it:

When I played Morrowind last time I noticed weird thing. When you surprise Ash creature(Ash ghoul,Ascended Sleeper etc...) you can actually talk to them!
The ordinary ones have nothing interesting to say,but when you talk to one of Ash Vampires(I think that one in Kogoruhn) you can talk about topic join the house dagoth(or something like that) he ask me if I will, when I say yes he send me to Dagoth Ur and wont attack me
But Dagoth Ur(of course) dont react on it.Is there some mod that add alternative ending to morrowind?Authors planned it at least. It is a pity becouse after first time I finished Morrowind I always wanted to join the "evil ones" kick that Imperial buts out of Vvanderfell... :max:

There are loads of mods adding new factions, including some for the 6th house. I don't tend to play "quest" mods anyway, I have enough trouble coping with all the quests in the main game without having even more thrown in :D

Borodin

Yes, there is one that's supposedly well-developed for the Sixth House. Can't say I've played it either, though I tend to enjoy quest mods. You should be able to find it on Morrowind Summit--search on "Sixth" in the description field.
