This program is what is called a distributed computing program and if activated will use your spare computing power to search for cures for various illnesses. The calculations needed to do this require a lot of computing power to complete and rather then buy time on a supercomputer with money these scientist never have they ask the internet community to, together, form a supercomputer all of their own. With out combined computers we can do these calculations in a matter of months and thus help find cures for these deseases. Join NOW. :ok:

do you really need a supercomputer to find cures for illnesses? if so can you give an example how? besides i have a really old computer that may count for nothing in terms of computing power.(P2-333,128 ram :bleh: )

It takes a while to process. My name has not appeared yet either.
All help is welcome. There are certain research that requires large amounts of number crunching. These are very specific questions researchers want an answer to. They write a program that does the calculations but the vast amount of possible outcomes means it would take a lot of time (decades) for a single computer to go through all the possible outcomes in order to find the right answer. This is what you need a supercomputer for. You might for example want to know the behaviour of a certain protiene under certain conditions. For such a specific question you can then write a model from which you can find the answer to that question.
This is not a program that has the ability to find the cure that will heal all forms of cancer but its help is invaluable to the researchers.

seti has been p***ing in the wind for years. if there were aliens, they would either keep radio silence (a good idea, when you think about it) or broadcast a big HELLO WORLD.
its a much better use of resources to help towards cancer treatments, seeing as 1 in 3 people will get cancer of some kind.

In it's whole history I think Seti has found one possible message which is about 300 light years away and they've sent every bit of radio information to it in the hope of aliens find it. By then anyone involved in it will be dead and the aliens will be getting out of date information.
I think this is a far better use of all the extra power from your computer

I'm using the basic set up and it's working fine for me but the proteome folding program is more CPU intensive. You get points every time your set of results is sent off to the research guys (done automatically)

Is this safe?
Coz sharing internet access is just asking for viruses
The Levitating Nun
16-02-2005, 09:44 PM
@xcom freak It's not sharing internet access at all, you download the files needed and then using your computer's power to process the data, the once it's all processed it sends it back. No internet sharing or anything
@fawfullhasfury I don't understand the whole space thing but perhaps its the amount of information you need to download for processing.

Exactly. If you have a communication program such as miRC, MSN Messenger (especially this one) or ICQ then you should not really bother even mentioning that problem since those three programs I just mentioned are at least a hundred times more dangerous than the UD agent...

They did use it for the search for an Anthrax antidote for the US-Army two years ago. Within a couple of months all molecules where scanned and the range was limited quite a lot, making further research a lot easier:
Preliminary indications are that we have narrowed the original pool of 3.57 billion molecules down considerably, having identified over 300,000 crude unique hits in the course of the project.
I've been running it for a couple of years, and I've never been infected with any virusses or hacked (knocks on wood). An up-to-date virusscanner, patched OS, a firewall and some common sense help with that too, but the UD-client has never proven to be any threat.
In short:
AFAIK it's totally safe to download!

no. it does have some downloading and uploading to get the data to process, and to send the results. its not a huge amount but if you have a download/upload cap you might want to think twice.

OK so now I gotta choose from three....
SETI@home -

Should I run all three at once when I'm not using the computer, or should I run one of them, then swap to another after about a month or so?
Or shall I not bother at all? My PC is already kinda slow as it is (and I'm very certain my harddrive is failing )

Hmm I just thought - it better not suck up too much CPU power, cos I play Morrowind alot... let's just say Morrowind isn't exactly "efficient" with memory/CPU usage.
Darn it I think my old UD account has been deleted. Once upon a time I used UD frequently, and I earned LOADS of points - I literally left my PC on all day (although I often used it at the same time UD was running)... so now I've made a new account (hmm guess what it's called? begins with a Y and ends with an E? heh.)
Anyway. WOOHOO let the cancer research begin!!!

dont forget to set your profile settings to use the cancer project only, if thats the one you want. the other one isnt for cancer.
as for the cpu useage... it wouldnt use any cpu away from the game, or from anything else you do. the priority of the UD task when its running is set at "low" so everything that has a higher priority (including 'normal') will override it.
having said that, you should quit the ud agent before playing the game, because you obviously wont be doing any useful processing on it during the game, and the agent uses up some precious memory, that is better used for the game.

How do u switch to cancer instead of the other default one
click on preferences in the ud agent
then click on 'modify this device profile' (it takes you to a web page, you will need to log in)
then on the website it takes you to 'my device manager', click on profiles, then click on 'default'
this takes you to the settings, you should probably not mess with the other settings in there, unless you have a big harddisk with lots of free space, and want to increase the space to allocate to ud.
leave the schedule alone.
then just unclick the proteome folding project, this leaves just the cancer project as your choice.

it comes set at the low priority setting.
ugh old normal half-life wouldnt have noticed it, but now they have "steam" which everyone knows is a POS. i wont even waste my time trying to figure out WHY it wont work with ud-agent, when EVERYTHING ELSE DOES FINE. its just a POS.
if its somehow screwing up with half-life, then quit the ud-agent before playing it. it will free up memory anyway.

I suggest that when you are using your computer extensively you go to the preference tab and click on the "Use only as Screensaver" box. That way it will only replace your screensaver. Later on if you want it back full time just go back to preference tab, unbox the option and hit apply and it will return immediatly to the previous setting.
I myself only use this as my screensaver. But my screensaver starts up after 5 minutes of innactivity so I don't think I'm missing much here. It will mainly run at the same time that my filesharing program is running and that really don't take much memory so I'm fine.
The rest of the time I plan to switch it on and off manually if I feel like it.

You get points everytime you reach 100% on a research. UD agent runs automatically when you switch on the computer however you can switch it off if you want to.

I got 588 points on my first and only result but I noticed others have around 1000 points with 6 results!
I don't think I really understand how this point calculation works... Perhaps the Rosetta brings more points?

Click on "view your scores and rewards" to find your stats and just above that is the amount of points on the agent.

The information on the net is updated at midnight GMT everyday so the points on your computer will be different if you've just sent off a set of results.

i dont really undestand the points calculation either, surely a result returned is a result returned?
anyway part of the equation is how fast your machine is, how much harddisk space you allocate to UD, and how fast your connection is.
why, i dont know.

I don't think this is a competition, but anyways :sneaky:
How come I only have 160 points, and my connection (56k modem) is not used when I don't do anything. I mean, this program doesn't send any information from my computer, if I'm right!
Havell

It downloads the package of information and then processes it, after it has finished processing it it sends it back. This is why connection speed has very little effect on the spped of this but processor speed does.

Hmmm, 8 years eh? If you have that much experience, than any problems derived from an offline program can easily be solved because you should already know quite a bit about background tasks. Honestly though , risking (just a bit,if at all)your computer is worth it when trying to work for a cancer cure.
P.S. Yeah I'm a reckless user of the P.C. , but there was only once I really had to reformat to fix my comp, most other probs should be quite easy when you have 9 years exp (I started at 9, 18 now).
Hope I convinced you, if that's what you're looking for....

because its a forum right? here you can say if you agree with the topic discussion and why or if you don't agree and why...

22-02-2005, 11:41 AM
The molecule thingie is not a scam. I used to work in a biology research center, on protein molecules, and we were using a similar database that the one being built by the UD agent.
You can also find more info by reading this thread on slashdot:
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/12/3...tid=136&tid=137 (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/12/30/2320234&tid=136&tid=137)
Basically, just to say it's not a scam, it's really useful (it won't find any cure by itself, but more likely help researchers to recognize a pattern), and doesn't do any harm to your computer...

I don't want to waste those 9 hours already spent so I'll carry on with this task but has anyone else's changed without warning and how do you change it back?

How do u switch to cancer instead of the other default one
click on preferences in the ud agent
then click on 'modify this device profile' (it takes you to a web page, you will need to log in)
then on the website it takes you to 'my device manager', click on profiles, then click on 'default'
this takes you to the settings, you should probably not mess with the other settings in there, unless you have a big harddisk with lots of free space, and want to increase the space to allocate to ud.
leave the schedule alone.
then just unclick the proteome folding project, this leaves just the cancer project as your choice. [/b][/quote]
And here is it again for all newbies :ok:

Hehe, it doesn't depend on the time spend, the less time spend on a singel work unit gives more points than one which you have spend a long time on. The points are distributed based on your system's statistics. E.g. how fast your processor is, and how much storage space you have chosen to use.
You can read about the calculation of points on their site. But it contributes a lot of CPU time to our team, so, keep it up!

i was thinking about the difference between donating your computer sparetime/electricity to cancer treatment research, or SETI.
the seti people are wanting to contact aliens. this isnt a worthless wish, but really.. apart from 'coolness' it wont help anything. it might even bring down a hunter-killer robot race that looks for new civilizations to wipe them out in their early stages.
aliens arent going to come over and cure cancer, anyway.
the cancer research is doing it for ourselves. our own technology and our own civilization. not yearning from some probably dead race in the distant past and distant ... distance..

Well the humanity survived long enought without outside help...I dont know why most peoplel think that aliens will destroy us OR help us.

Probably because a lot of people think that the Human race is doomed and that an exterior help could solve or at least help on that matter.

thats why i am asking b4 i put it on. The machines i put it on are fast new ones so should be able to pump out a couple blocks every week for each machine. 13 of them and each runs 6+ hours/day with 1 or 2 on constantly

Tulac, I can't see why your professors would complain providing you put it to them by saying that it uses up EXCESS cpu power (that's the important word) and that it can help cure cancer and other diseases. Also you can set up the different programs under your devices so you will have far more time up However anyone putting the program up on school computers should really check first so they don't get shouted at or have their accounts removed or something like that.

You'll have to expect people to reduce their contribution a little in the future. Mine calculations are always of Rosseta, they take a huge amount of time (100h in average), how can I switch to cancer cure, was given that a few times and the calculation took me around 10-20h...

You need to update the profile and select at the bottom Cancer and/or Rosetta. It's two boxes, one for each. Unbox the Rosetta one and you'll get only Cancer packets next time your client ask for more.
Amiga

Yeah, it's cooler doing cancer research, don't know why. But I guess it makes you feel like you're doing more of a difference...
Just follow the little guide Eagle of Fire gave you and you should have no trouble.

Don't you generate equal points on rosseta like on coue the cancer?
Havell
29-03-2005, 12:23 PM
Yeah, the rosetta takes longer but you get more points for it. I prefer to have to have medium sized packages of points a couple of times a day instead of big ones every few days.

And just to be on the safe side I've put my two computers next to my mini fridge which keeps them nice and cool :ok:
im not sure about that!
the fridge just moves heat around (from inside to the outside) so it should be a bit hotter near the fridge, if anything!
also because the fridge needs to let the air at the back heat up, if the computer is heating the air near the fridge, the fridge has to work harder to keep itself cool inside!

He's right you know, fridges release more heat into the outside world than they take away from the inside. In fact, if you opened a fridge in a room and kept it open it would actually heat the room up!

My mate overclocked his PC a while back and it was running at 47c or something like that, recently stuck it next to his window while it was open and dropped the temperature to about 37.
Edit: oops forgot the stats

We're moving up a bit slower now but I reckon within a week we'll be in the top 10000 for total CPU time. Sadly I can't provide any more time until Monday as I'm going on an exciting residential course with music to the coldest place on earth and will be living on a diet of flannels...that's what the food tastes like anyway.

Sounds like a thrill, bring candy bars, I say. No chance of leaving the computer on?
Hmm, you might have a point about the fridge, darn...
I have no way of knowing the temperature of my computers, but from being in the room I can say it's not too hot. They should be all right...
I'll be resuming my contribution to the help suqad in aproximately 12 hours with a total amount of 4.4 GHZ CPU power.
Go clock, go!

Hmm, back and everything should be resumed. Though my buddy managed to, in one hour, corrupt everything on my server's hdd and make it start with software failure on every reboot. Formatted, lost a bit of progress, it'll be fine now though.

Listen to this, a real story is going to be told...
Once upon a time... wrong one!
Found it, so let me begin.
Yesterday, I was on my comp. doing my buissnes, with my tools...
In mean time the Rosseta project was doing her calculations...
Suddenly a big wolf arrived... wrong story again, I meant the power was shut down, AND all my 7 h of CPU time were lost!!!
EDIT: Added 1324 points to the team, few days ago... :D

Way back at the start of the project, United Devices granted financial bonusses on some occasions, hence the rewards.
