Gothic

After playing Gothic II I finally bought the original game (which was difficult to find) but now I'm facing a new problem: I can't control it.
I somehow managed to pick up the pickaxe but I can't seem to pick anything else up, and I can't equipt the pickaxe either. And how do I talk to people?

I remember facing these problems in the demo but I figured these were just limitations put into the demoversion. This is quite strange, I agree, but any help is gladly appreciated.

in the demo atleast -

And how long does it take to get used to the controls (the forced ones)?
Heard good things of the game,
It´s in my reach,
And the demo annoys me highly...

yes but none of the controls seem to work and the control info isn't very extensive.

action is left ctrl but that doesn't seem to do anything whatsoever. Objects and people are highlighted but no matter what buttons I press nothing happens

Its really annoying, walking around without being able to talk to anyone unless they talk to you first.

LOL man I got Gothic 1. That game was kickin....Lets see if I remember correctly...
Crtl up- attack, pick up item, etc
tab- inventory
directional buttons- move character
mouse- turn character
space bar-stats
L-current missions
