View Full Version : A Question About Popularity Of The Games.

I've been looking through the popularity list of the games and there's something I just don't understand (maybe I'm just to dumb, or there's something quite wrong here).

How can Alone in the dark be the 3rd most popular game?
It has the editor's rating: 5
User's rating: 3
And 1617 votes all together.

That's all fine, but the 4th game is SimCity 2000 and it has:
Editor's rating: 5 (exactly the same)
User's rating: 4
And 3253 votes.

Now I'd think that a game with more votes and higher user rating (editor's rating is the same) would be more popular... So why isn't it???

Oh and when you look at the downloads you'll see, that SimCity is in the 3rd place and Alone in the dark 5th. So it all makes no sence to me.

3/1617=0.001855

4/3253=0.001229

Maybe?

Good try. I've thought of that too, but it doesn't work with other games.

Settlers II - rating 3 (2170 votes) - 3/2170=0.001382488
Day of the Tentacle - rating 4 (2018 votes) - 4/2018=0.00198216

I guess we're missing a variable, but I've no idea what could it be :wall:

maybe its rated most popular on number of downloads or something

It's a good old mystery, whomever solves it first should get a virtual cookie.

I, too, think popularity is based on the ammount of downloads.

Like I said in my initial post:

So why is Alone in the Dark more popular then SimCity 2000?

like I said, perhaps the ammount of downloads plays a role, too.
I remember a discussion such as this one some time back, don't remember the outcome though.

You people wonder about everything...

The popularity is based on a mathematical equasion made by Kosta.

It goes something like this:
(Editor rating x 10 + User rating x number of votes) + (Number of pageviews + number of downloads)

Something like that anyways.

That's stupid, you can't bas erit one page views, page views shoud npot be involved at all, they mean jack muck.

I think they play a pretty small role next to downloads in the equation.

It does seem useful, adding pageviews. I mean... only based on rating and downloads, then one person could keep downloading the game over and over and over, boosting its popularity. Pageviews's a checkup for that. Also, if pageviews is alot higher than downloads, it'll show people know the game's name, but don't like the way it looks. It's kinda popular then, as it's got a reputation, but not enough to climb ranks.

Someone could just as easily visit one page continuously to increase it's popularity.

I still don't think pageviews have anything to do with it, when I first came to this site I would just browse through nearly every game looking for something I'd find interesting.

Tom's assupmtion was wrong...
popularity = (hits * (rating / (numvotes+1)) * (editorrating+1) + downloads) / 10
