Hi all!
I have tried to solve this in other forums, but they are not as nice as you people. ;)
I own Heroes of Might and Magic III and it worked fine in my old laptop. When it broke and I had to buy a new one with Windows 7, it just does not work. I can't even install it.
Would DosBox work with it and how would that be? What do you suggest?

HoMM3 works just fine on Windows 7 for me... and it's a Windows application, you can forget about DOSBOX.
Tried any compability mode? Ran as admin?

ok... I am feeling VERY stupid right now.
What kind of compability mode?

You need to right click on the executable and select an appropiate compatibility mode, most preferably either Windows 98 or Windows XP. Here's a possible solution (http://www.sevenforums.com/gaming/41315-heroes-might-magic-iii-win7.html#post540103) on another forum. Or you can spend $10 bucks on a gog.com version (http://www.gog.com/gamecard/heroes_of_might_and_magic_3_complete_edition) which is said to be working out of the box.

If it still refuses to work, bring it back to the distributor, in case your copy isn't working.

Uh, I don't suppose her copy of HoMM 3 was meant to be run on Windows 7, if I'm correct.
This is for Windows 9x, right? It can probably be made run in Windows 7, although there's no clear-cut procedure. Try what Tomekk says. This is a checklist guide I made about old Windows games:

This thread should be in Troubleshooting ;)

It sounds either you should accept when the popup of windows says "try reinstall with the suggested setting", or try running it with Win98 compatibility mode.

@twillight: Windows XP Service Pack 2 does not offer to "try reinstall with the suggested setting", if I recall correctly, that is a feature of Vista / 7.
@Hassialan: If you are installing from CD-Rom, you might want to make sure the discs are not scratched or dirty. Any kind of physical damage might corrupt the files, making installing difficult or impossible. You might try to clean the CDs with special micro fiber cloth (your average T-Shirt will not work, and might even make things worse). If they are scratched, you can download the game files from anywhere and use YOUR OWN SERIAL KEY to install the game - well, technically, you are permitted to make a backup of your original CDs... let's presume you made some. :shifty:
If you are not installing the game from a physical media then you need to make sure the files are not corrupted.

IIRC there are CD/DVD "cleaning" tools that pretty much grind away a thin layer of the transparent coating and polish it so that it should be readable again.

There's an entire industry dedicated to being specialized in data recovery - if it was that important I'd probably invest in their services than trying to do it myself. :)
