I REALLY want to play Old-School DOOM Deathmatch and Cooperative with all you fellow Abandonians!

Therefore I've created this thread, and uploaded this easy-to-setup-and-use package:
http://www32.zippyshare.com/v/58172784/file.html
to arrange, organize, and report on all Abandonia Old-School DOOM Deathmatches and Cooperatives!

The package contains the Shareware version of DOOM, but if you have Ultimate DOOM, DOOM II, and/or Final DOOM, you can swap out the Shareware WAD in favor of those other WADs. But you can't put more than one WAD in the package folder, because it won't read them altogether.

I wanna do a server test tomorrow at 12:00 Eastern Standard Time. Up to 32 people can join, and I'll give the instructions when people reply to this thread volunteering to help perform the test.

If all goes well, I might even record matches and upload them to Youtube every time we do this!

------------------------------------------
SERVER TEST
------------------------------------------
GAME = SHAREWARE DOOM
MATCH TYPE = DEATHMATCH 3
MAP = E1M1
SERVER NAME = ABANDOOMIA SERVER

Reply to this thread if you're willing to help!

Now we're talkin' :D

Assuming nothing unexpected happens, I'm in!

I'll probably get shot to pieces... last time I played FPS multiplayer was Unreal Tournament or Counterstrike, 8 years ago? Last time I played Doom multiplayer in late 1990s...

Next time be more verbose on what we're downloading (Doom Legacy - not everyone tracks all ports/remakes made during the last 15 years) and where to find instructions: http://doomlegacy.sourceforge.net
http://legacywiki.net/index.php/Console_Commands

Some people would prefer installing it themselves.

By adding autoexec.cfg being a copy of config.cfg it overrides any settings I change using menus. Including my player name etc. Better blank that file.

If you say so, but I'll leave my package available for download for those who don't like setting things up and just wanna play right out of the box.

Besides, Legacy won't read config.cfg unless you create a BAT file forcing it to. That's why I created autoexec.cfg.

Hey,

I'd like to join, I already downloaded your well-prepared package SpiDol, tell me what to do.

Congratulations on your efforts organising this event.

All righty then!

-Start the game by double-clicking "doomlegacy.exe"
-Set up anything you need in "OPTIONS", except for "Network Options" and "Game Options". I'll handle those.
-When ready, go to "MULTIPLAYER".
-Go to "SETUP PLAYER ONE" to alter your name and uniform color.
-Once your player's set up, go to "CONNECT SERVER", and search for the "ABANDOOMIA SERVER". Make sure "Search on" is set to "Internet"!
-Select the server to join the match!

Now remember, we're doing the test using Shareware DOOM on E1M1 using Deathmatch 3.0 rules, and it doesn't start until 12:00 Eastern Standard Time. I'll post another reminder in the Shoutbox 5 minutes prior to the test...

Oh and one more thing: PLEASE make sure your username is the same one you use on Abandonia, to avoid player confusion.

Oh and another thing: Your firewall must be either off, or allowing DOOM Legacy to access the Internet!

I didn't say it's bad you've created this package, but that you didn't inform about the alternative solution (own install). Any case, not linking us to configuration docs was a serious omission.
Legacy won't read config.cfg unless you create a BAT file forcing it to.
No, it reads it by default (unless you rename it) :
http://legacywiki.net/index.php/Config.cfg_file

BTW: I bought Ultimate/Final/Doom II, so if the test works I'll be able to play other maps.

Hmm, Doom Legacy is the first source port of Doom that I've played, and it's quite fun. Also TonyD who did the bots there (I think) is the original author behind Dune Legacy (http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/dunelegacy/index.php?title=Main_Page).

However, I'm pretty sure Doom can also be played online via the DOSBox IPX emulation. There's even a community that plays DOS games like that (although they focus on more obscure titles), The DOS Multiplayer Archives (http://dosmp.com/site/).

I wonder if this ever got off the ground, it'd have been nice to see.

Sorry it took so long, but I think I'm ready to give this another go...

We're not using DOOM Legacy anymore. This time we're just using good old Vanilla DOOM (the original version of the game) under DOSBox. The following link is a copy of Shareware DOOM bundled with DOSBox already set up to join my server online:

DOOM Shareware (Online) (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B4lkbVswodwjY2VuNnE0SUhSeGs)

Only 3 people can join my server at a time, and they all have to be joined and ready before the game can start (the limitations of Vanilla DOOM). So if you wanna take part in this, reply to this thread saying you will, and once I have 3 volunteers, I'll set a date and time as to when we'll do a deathmatch (or co-op run)...

Why not use YANG (http://yang-online.com/) or CGA (http://www.classicgamingarena.com/)?

Why not use YANG (http://yang-online.com/) or CGA (http://www.classicgamingarena.com/)?

Because:
1. I'm being stubborn right now (sorry about that), and
2. According to this (http://doomwiki.org/wiki/How_to_play_Doom_online_multiplayer#Using_vanilla_ Doom), it's possible to set up an online DOSBox game without all that extra stuff, and I wanna try it out that way first...
