View Full Version : A nifty way to get people who come here to buy and play DOOM & DOOM II...

I piled together a package that should be used to convince Abandonia visitors to buy and play DOOM and DOOM II.

It contains:
ZDOOM and its OpenGL-based spinoff, GZDOOM
Complete with controls and options set up for people who want to play the games as originally created, and for people who like modern-day shooters.
CD-Quality Music and Sound Effects
Crisp audio for blowing demons to bits with.
and as a bonus...
The PlayStation Version Soundtrack
Which replaces the rock music with dark and creepy ambience, for at night when you have the lights off and the volume all the way up.

I included the shareware version of DOOM I with the package, but here's the catch:
The CD-Quality Audio and PlayStation Soundtrack won't work with the shareware version!
I intentionally did this so we can tease visitors who download the package and persuade them to buy the games. However, because I compiled this without Final DOOM in mind, both music types won't work for that game either, but the CD-Quality sound effects will.

Here's the package. (http://www34.zippyshare.com/v/81105096/file.html)

You can keep the DOS version and DOOM95 on the DOOM info page for archival purposes, but delete the Source Ports section and replace it with this package. I'm sure people will start looking for source ports to use once they fully experience what this pack can do to DOOM.

I also compiled a newspost for when you do add this archive to the info page:

Welcome back to HELL!

Surely you must have picked up the awesome DOOM 3 BFG Edition by now, and if you did, I'm sure you know that DOOM 1 & 2 are also in the collection as well. If you don't have the BFG Edition, why don't you pick it up for PC today and experience the one that started it all (http://store.steampowered.com/agecheck/app/208200/), all over again!

But don't you wish DOOM 1 & 2 played more like DOOM 3? Don't you wish the classic games sounded more crisp and epic? Or maybe scarier? Well today your wish is granted! Forum veteran SpiDoL has pieced together a package which beefs up your classic DOOM experience with options for classic and modern gameplay, CD-quality music and sound, and an alternate "dark ambience" soundtrack!

The shareware version of DOOM is included with the package, but beware: The new audio does NOT work with this version! You have to buy DOOM I & II (either from the BFG Edition or elsewhere) and place their WAD files into the package folder to get the full experience!

You can grab the package from DOOM's info page now! (http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/29762/DOOM.html)

And what's in it for Abandonia? Or us? Doing free PR work for some old product?

No, I wished Doom 3 would play more like the original Doom.

To play full version of Doom games you need original .wad files. ;)

@RRS:
I'd like more people buying and playing the game so I have more people to play with and against. There IS ZDaemon after all. Also, if you really don't like modern gameplay, it's not that hard to make the controls, gameplay, and even behavior, akin to the original in my package. I've already created a config file like that for if you're willing to give it a chance...

@Muzzy:
I compiled something like that and it's more complete and polished IMO. I can send it to you via PM if you want me to, it's MUCH less of a headache that trying to set up JDOOM.

All right. Never mind that package.

Keep everything on DOOM's info page the way it is, except for one thing:

Skulltag is no longer developed and no longer functioning online. You NEED to replace it with either:

Zandronum
The successor to Skulltag

-OR-
ZDaemon
One of Skulltag's biggest rivals. It just added support for the BFG Edition versions of DOOM and DOOM II
