So, what part in the Ultima series kicks the behind of all others? Make your selection and help me solve this age old question!

I've played all of them from VI (Except Online) and I must say the one that kept me awake the longest was Ultima Underworld I.

What? Ascension's not on the list??
Don't know why everyone seemingly hates this game. Sure, combat system needed improvement and frames per second used to be horrendous (no longer a problem).

Yea, Ultima IX should be in there too, for completness' sake, but I doubt it would get many votes. :)

What? How can anyone not like an extremely linear so-called RPG with almost no stats, loads of graphical bugs, and an enemy AI that would be defeated by a dead cockroach?

i've played most of them...except ultima I-III
the best "normal" ultima was ultima IV part 1 and 2
the worst game of these was by far ultima IX...so buggy
but my secret favourite is the underworld series!! :kosta:
i wonder why i'm the only one at the moment having voted for underworld 2?
it bears all great aspects of the first part but has a more diversed gameworld...
ahhhh, remembering those times i was playing it for weeks, day and night.
i played uw2 with a good friend of mine...when it was night one of us kept
exploring while the other on took a little nap, and the other way round :D
by making such "nightshifts" we proceeded pretty quick, and replayed it again
after finishing to search for secrets and goodies we've missed in the first run.
it was great!! * experiencing a intense shiver of nostalgy now *

That reminds me, why don't we have the whole series? I never played the first ones, but they should be good.

Well, is this poll gonna be changed so Ultima Online is added or should I just null my vote? ;)

Don't forget that the storywriters apparently had no knowledge of the Ultima series.
Also, put Worlds of Ultima on the list. Savage Empires and Martian Dreams, especially Martian Dreams, were incredible games.

I've played all except Ultima Online, and my favorite is easily Ultima 7: BG, followed by U7 SI and then Ultima 6.

Interesting. I thought it was very well handled, with great quests, numerous unexpected twists to the plot, and nice game balance.

I read an interesting interview with one of the original designers once, about how they had to change the entire plot in the middle of the development, because they either ran out of time or money to finish it the way they meant to. There was some fan made project to remake the game using the original plot, but I don't know what became of that.

A toss up between Ultima 4 or 7, but I voted for Ultima 4. It introduced so many new concepts never seen in Computer RPGs at the time that it was a quite a landmark. By far longer and bigger than Ultima 1-3 combined. It was one of the first that had consequences in your development based on your actions with NPC's. A dynamic changing world, night and day cycles, NPC with thier own schedules. It was awhile before other companies attempted this and still you see games like Fable, KOTOR, acclaimed as revolutionary, when Lord British started doing this back in the early 80's over 20 years ago.
U7 rocked though. It had (and still does) have some nice graphics, and after 6 previous games, Ultima 7 was such a polished game with so much to do. So as a game U7 is the best IMO, but for historical reasons and the effect on the gaming world, I think U4 had a much bigger impact.
U 1- 3 are pretty fun though. You can finish them in a pretty quickly as they are pretty short (U1 and U2 maybe a couple days, U3 maye a week or two?). But one thing I like about U1 and U2 is the humor and the time travel. If I remember right, you can visit other galaxies with a spaceship and also even visit McDonald's. The later Ultima's lost the sci-fi aspect, which I kinda was sad about that.
