Help!

I am stuck right from beginning, I can not leave, he tells me all the time I did not finished why I came in there.

I did: Examined both bodies, noted both bodies and graffiti, talked with all the policemen, and these two black guys watching the scene.

What more should I do?

Those old adventures games were very very difficult.
Did someone play MAD DOG!
I know i play Gabriel(i think that was name of game),very good adventure.
Same as sherlock holmes adventures.
Huh when i came here on this forum i just realized how many there was awsome games for DOS.

You wanna talk about hard games:

'The detective' for C64 !

Hardest case solving game I've ever played.
People gets killed all the time at different places with different objects.
And the music when you walk in to a room where someone's been killed still scares the shite out of me... :

Good game though...

5hite's not such a bad word ?

The difficulty is one of the reasons why I prefer LucasArts over Sierra. In LucasArts games, there always seems to be a logical solution. The Sierra games sometimes require you to think illogically or learn from experience which very often gets annoying.

Agree with you there, for example in Larry 1 when you purchase wine from the liqour store. How am I suppose to know that the cab driver's gonna drink my wine and the game end ?

It's ok if it's a problem that you can solve after first failing, but in this case the game ends and you can only get past it by starting over.

Very good game overall.....and it's fairly easy just follow the info you have.... I hated the end though.......it's not a logical end.....not at all!!!!
what we have there is a retarded crossdresser. The clues i obtained were talking about a beautiful and sensational lady in red......even if that info comes from a 5 y.o. kid. My own prime suspect was yo moneys girlfriend, but i wanted to take a cigarette butt from the ashtray for analisys and wouldn't let me....Furthermore the way you find the murderer is by stupid means of luck........hey come on........do u expect me to believe that all the work done has to rely on a dog that drags you on a rope? (that's so silly!!!!!).......maybe sierra was very hasty in releasing the game......because i am sure they could think of something better than that......extremely disappointing....only the shoe directed me to a thought of the killer not being a woman.
But if you remember at the beginning it said: ur killer has transportation
I can't see how a retard could obtain a driving license and learn driving on his own. Furthermore.......what was his assosiation with the rest of the victims? something is a miss!!!!!!!!!

:( I started playing PQ 4 and I have a problem. After talking to Mrs. Garcia about her dead son, I read the memo about Hickman's funeral and I go to his house, where (according to the walktrough) I should speak to his wife then automatically go to the bar. Instead, I arrive at Hickman's house, I knock, but I receicve a message, saying nobody's home at this time. What should I do?

I haven't played PQ4 yet. I'm downloading it as I read these posts. A suggestion for Hickman's that you might get some entertainment out of and might work:
What would a cop do?
He'd leave and goof off. Driving around periodically going by the house to see if anyone was there, and periodically stopping to knock again.

Get some dunkin blownuts and go back! :w00t:

Downloaded, installed. Is it taking anyone else an hour to step into, and out of the elevator? It doesn't freeze or lock up but...just sits there. I can move the cursor and the music plays but it stalls. Is this happening to anyone else? Anyone know the solution? I'm thinking maybe a defrag might help but my drive isn't that badly fragmented.
Maybe there's a patch or something?
I've left and let it run while I was gone for an hour while this has happened, the program is responding and all other processes not needed are closed. When I came back from my outting I was finally able to choose a floor. I got to the floor I was going to and had to wait another half hour until I could do anything else. Anyone?

Is there a Lucas Arts game game where you could die, too? Don't remember one. Wait, except Idiana Jones 3 in some situations and fights and in 4 only in fights. Never play The Dig. In Full Throttle you could die, too. But when you made a mistake, Ben said that it was wrong and you restarted before doing the last action.

Not to be nitpicky, but the review states that the game is based on the fictional town of Lytton. Actually this game is based on the city of Los Angeles with locations that exist in real life.

It's been a while since I played this, did anyone manage to pick up on the killer's actual motive? Was there any reason to Hick's murder, or was he randomly pricking people in the movie theatre, then torturing and killing them because he was simply deranged?

HINTS FOR POLICE QUEST 4

Police Quest 4: Open Season

Problem:
What do I do at the murder scene in the alley?

Hint:
Talk to everyone at the murder scene. Click the eye icon

kit. Click the eye

Also click the notebook
on the graffiti on the wall and the body in the dumpster.

I have some serious technical issues in PQ4. I can't get music nor sounds.
If I select any sound device in "install", when launch the game I get an error of audio.cpp:xxxx:xxx or something like that
I can only play with no sound at all.
The musics are defective too. The game simply crashes after a while, when music is enabled. DosBOX says something about fatal error in da driver screen(not the playing screen, the other).

The difference between the first three Police Quests and the fourth is that the fouth is based on former commissioner Daryl Gates stories (or something) and takes place in L.A., while the first three take place in the fictional Lytton and star Sonny Bonds. After No. 3 ended, so did the continuous story. Also, No. 4 was followed by some cool simulation-style S.W.A.T. games, which would be cool if offered here.

Yeah I remember reading about that, and how this game had a little controversy because of gates involvement, because of that incident in the 90's.

It'd be cool to have Swat games, but I imagine there's the size issue.

I generally like the Watts PQ series a bit better, though this one does have alot of its good points.

I do love the Sierra challenge, just get frustrated when I have to guess what to do based entirely on trial and error and not have some sort of hint. You either have to be lucky or restore alot if you play these unaided...and frustrating as it seems at least you feel really satisfied beating it without a walkthrough.

By the end I was pulling my hair out with this one trying to tie it together. I also would of been nervous being an obvious Mr Nice guy cop in the bad neighborhoods asking everyone if they saw anything unusual. LOL

:Tom:

Yeah I have the collection too.
I can't get it to run in DOS with voice. I'm beginning to think that voice only works in windows but i'm not sure.

But when I try to run the file sierraw.exe it doesn't work

Whether this helps anyone or not, you really need to run PQ4 in Windows mode to get the best out of it if you're installing it from the PQ Collection disks. The installer/setup procedure is particularly flaky anyway and I suspect that the games featured in the collection have been updated to make them more compatible with Windows 95 (and consequently less so with DOS). Anyone that's installed the collection version of PQ1 will know that the Alt-D cheat was removed, for example.

Another minus point from the collection (which I bought around 1998 I think) was that the manual didn't have all the codes you needed to play PQ1VGA and PQ2 properly - the locker code is missing for PQ1VGA and the names needed to complete the copy protection in PQ2 are missing - helpful! :) Anyone needing these details can probably find them in any of the normal walkthroughs, etc.

In case I've missed the point (not the first time) why is anyone running this in DOSBox anyway?

I can't get the collection to run in windows xp. Thats why I tried to run it in dos.
IS there any way to get this to run in XP? I don't want to make a dual boot with win98.

You're right that PQ4 in windows is the best way to experience this game.

I have the first release of the collection ("The 4 Most Wanted") and all of my manuals contained the proper information for the copyright info.

I know I played this game a few months ago on my XP system.

Did you try using Dosbox?

Edit:
What kind of error are you getting?

I ran the install, chose accept, then ran the game (sierra.exe), and it ran fine with sound and all (in WinXP)_

PQ4 as a full photo-realistic game looked a bit wasted by today's standard. It's just shame all those resources didn't make into SVGA. I owned the CD n back then the VGA was quite satisfying. It is by far the most detailed detective game I ever played. Unfortunately the speech didn't come with texts making it hard for non-English speaker to comprehend. Overall it's a challenging game for serious fan.

Just an idea, with recent CSI popularity the game might be more profitable today. Back at the time, I'm not too crazy about the coroner's analysis for example.

Very good game overall.....and it's fairly easy just follow the info you have.... I hated the end though.......it's not a logical end.....not at all!!!!
what we have there is a retarded crossdresser. The clues i obtained were talking about a beautiful and sensational lady in red......even if that info comes from a 5 y.o. kid. My own prime suspect was yo moneys girlfriend, but i wanted to take a cigarette behind from the ashtray for analisys and wouldn't let me....Furthermore the way you find the murderer is by stupid means of luck........hey come on........do u expect me to believe that all the work done has to rely on a dog that drags you on a rope? (that's so silly!!!!!).......maybe sierra was very hasty in releasing the game......because i am sure they could think of something better than that......extremely disappointing....only the shoe directed me to a thought of the killer not being a woman.
But if you remember at the beginning it said: ur killer has transportation
I can't see how a retard could obtain a driving license and learn driving on his own. Furthermore.......what was his assosiation with the rest of the victims? something is a miss!!!!!!!!!
[/b]

You are ABSOLUTELY correct in your assesment of the game. It was SO GOOD up until the end where it just fell apart. Nothing made sense. Who was the GORGEOUS HONKIN WOMAN IN RED? The cross-dressing cop? Certainly not the chubby retarded guy. How did the retarded guy pick his victims? I get, maybe, the cops - but why the young boy? Why the two Asian people? Who did the head belong to? What was the motivation for the killings. God - they should have had a 15-minute cutscene at the end to explain it all. I FELT SO LET DOWN. If anyone has some reasonable explanation of this game ending, please email me at !!!VREEEM!!.

Thanks.

I bought this game probably about 12 years ago. Good game, I lost my CD, but have been able to find abandonware copies of the old ones. I remember the copy I owned had the voice over on it, but I am unable to find that. It definitely is more humorous to hear the sarcastic comments about half the things in the game.

Also, I never though about how little sense the end makes. All of the evidence you gather has absoleutly nothing to do with finding the killer. You lasso a stupid German Sheppard and it drags you to a doggie door. Then for some reason, your charachter decides that the dog must know something so he follows it in to an alley-side door. Where you sneak around until you get jumped by a tranny. The you wake up later unarmed, and you somehow find hairspray and a lighter that kills the psycho. Woohoo.

Good game though, PQ3 was also good, but the problems there were the driving. It was dang near impossible to drive anywhere in the game. PQ2 was good! and the 2 versions of the first were also good.

I have bought ever single game in this series. I own, PQ1, 2, 3 and 4. I own swat, swat 2, swat 3, swat 4 and the Stetchkov syndicate (swat 4 expansion).

Well, actually I believe the way the ending is justified is that out of the 5 murders they all point to different things. The very beginning points to it being a woman that smokes because of cigarette lipstick. The second dead cop scene you find a red shoe, yet again a woman. #3 you find out that there is a stray dog interested in the bodies and that it was the same killer at that murder scene, the last 2 people, one of them is the social worker for the woman who owns the strip bar and the mentally unstable (not retarded) owner of the theater.

If you paid attention the guy who owns the theater mother was murdered when he was young and he went nuts (Ie. the stuttering and stuff). Also, if you pay attention you read/hear him tell you that he owns a dog that someone claims he didn't feed and take care of properly (the stray at the park). What ends up happening is you run out of leads and you figure you should try to see wtf the dog is all about. You lasso him and you get drug to the theaters back alley. You go in, find a head in the fridge and realize that the crazy guy is the crossdressing murderer.

The ending wasn't like.. all this evidence here.... bam... dog.. rope... end. Thats a gross simplification. If you pay attention it really makes some sense.

Also, like all the people in the game say this woman is huge... Moneys girlfriend wasn't.

To answer the last bit... he had transportation because he wasn't retarded.
His association with the rest of his victims was; #1 the last victim was his social worker, the second cop was a regular at the strip club which another one of his social workers clients owned, I guess the 2 knew each other. Don't quite get the 1st cop, could be that he was also a regular the club, LOL. Then the one at the park was probably a random pick from the theater like the woman being tortured in the last scene when you kill the murderer, or at least, the game doesn't quite cover them. The second body found in the car with his social worker... well that one's got me, maybe yet another random movie theater kidnap.

Questions? I hope this helps.

OMG!! did you guys play the game or what? The young boy wasn't killed by the serial killer, he was killed by the local gang. The guy in the very beginning of the game who is standing against the red fence "Ragtop Spiff). He killed the boy. They straight up tell you that in the game... if you missed it, then you, without a doubt, weren't paying attention so the fact that you are confused is not surprising to me.

I hope that helps too, check my other post.

It's funny how when we play a game we like it then having finshed it by hook or by crook we start finding faults with. Oh! I am not against justified criticism or appreciation. For example I like PQ2 best of the four of the series I have, and I did see some illogical occurances, but the I play games for their own sake. I have yet to see any game without some fault or the other. But then I am a diehart who started gaming since first PC became available and we had glorious CGA and then CGA and used 5.25" bootable floppies, no DOS or Windows :).
