Well Kotaku might be a cesspool most of the time, but this brightened my day:
Dark Engine tweak for modern OS (http://kotaku.com/5946462/whoah-system-shock-2-and-thief-2-just-got-surprise-patches)
From a brief look.. 32bit, high rez support, bug fixes. Grab it and dust off your System Shock 2 copies.. now!

Please, excuse me dear hunvagy for my Q.
I know nothing about this game but plan to play in the future.
DOSBox 0.74 solves the problem or not?

SS2 is native windows, so no. It was made during the end of the win95/98 era (1999ish) and it is a fickle beast with modern OSes. Hence the happy realization of someone actually caring about it to warrant a patch. The one you meant is probably System Shock 1.

Thats one obstacle away from getting it to GOG.

Use this and stop embarrassing yourself with questions like that. ;)
Do you know if it does anything with the encoding? Because I had managed to play SS2 in 1920x1080 in Vista x64 all right, except the speech and cutscenes wouldn't play. And I've followed the FAQs and the cutscenes play in Windows Media Player just fine... >_< I'd blame the resolution, but what about the in-game speech...?
I'll take a look at this...

Yup, is in the release notes, they switched the video encoding, that pesky Looking Glass Indeo codec is gone for good.

Should be, haven't had time to try it myself, besides I switched to Win7 2 years ago. Because it's so much better :p As I stated somewhere else before, XP gave me the chills, and Win7 ran Deathtrap Dungeon WITH SOUND out of the box. Anyway, just grab the package and read the release notes, it has every info you need.

OK,
I will try this gem on my ME and XP and report You, Dear Hunvagy.

Yoga, your bravery requires from you to test it with System Shock 2.
I played it like 2 years ago, with some unofficial patch for higher resolution, maybe some previous version of here mentioned one. It's just perfect!
I'm planing to try Bioshock as well, in near future.

Dear BranjoHello,
brave smashed Lords Xeen and Chaos and i believe he will send to another better world final boss(es) of SS2.
But why no one said good (bad) word for SS1?
:picard:
Rats!
My first attempts to install SS2 under XP failed.
Long story to explain.
Started second.
The game itself and its installer too are hard to run in most Windows systems. But the good news is that installing it is much easier than running the installer: just copy the "shock" folder from the CD into your hard disk.

It won't probably run, though, and you'll probably have to patch it further. I haven't tried this one yet.

Hehe, looks damn good.
Some more info:
Installed SS2 without probs in Win7/32 , full sized installation from original CD (NOT in prog files, but on E:\partition)
Applied patches.
Runs fine, no comp settings needed.
Lovely 1920x1080 setting.
Here goes my free time ................ :D

No, no when i start this game, pls some very, very brave gamer to be with me and the lighting to be at least 500 wats.
Not for weak hearths?
Have to be brave as Dosraider ...or maybe humble brave?

Same here, finally got around to test it. Installed from the CD without a hitch, applied 2.3 patch (which surprisingly also worked, even though the installer was ancient). Then just added 2.4 and voila. Though I had to manually add the 1920x1080 to the available resolutions, but after that, worked like a charm :)

Do You mean W 7, dear Hunvagy?Bravo.
Not same here. My second attempt to run it under XP Pro failed again.
Note: It was started before above directions.
But i will do my best to start this gem (after Dosraider).
I do not know this game still, but with all my respect will tell that for me gems are:
-MoM
-Doom2
-Dune2
-DM1&2
-BoK
-Arena
-FT
-AitD1,2,3

Poor Nvidia Geforce FX 520 with miserable 64 MB Ram.
Ha ha ha
Note: This is my second machine, not the first which is now under construction.

Are you sure it's 64 MB? Anyway it should be more then enough for System Shock 2 imo. You have to install the original version, which is 1.15, then apply the official 2.3 patch, and then copy over the files described in the readme of the patch I linked. It should work after that.

Yes, it is 64 MB absolutely. Soon i will upgrade the version.
Yes, i installed the original version, then applied the official 2.3 patch, then copied over the files.
Then i pressed Enter on the label Play and...nothing happened.

Hey, dear twillight, what's up with You?
Do You ill or...?
Hope You finished FT with the special heroes?
Rats!!
Again problem:
I installed and run the game.
How I run?
Open My Computer, enter my BD-ROM (H) SYSTEMSHOCK2 ( I use Daemon Tools Lite), in the panel of SS2 -version 2.3 i press Play.
I entered the game, press Load and run the game in the beginning when i am in some Training room, collecting some stuff. I make some steps and game frozes. No music, no sound..
Then i press Ctrl+Alt+Del and in Windows Task menager i see that
SS2 Patch final 2.03 - Not Responding - ..
My PC is upgraded soon - Video Card 1 GB, RAM - 2 GB, faster CPU. Coff. 5.5.

If you have 2.3, then you did not install the patch at the very beginning of this thread, that actually makes it work on modern computers. No wonder you had to take out the video codecs.

Of course You are correct.
My fault.
Yes, v.2.3 will not work with 2.03 patch.

Yep, I'm a little ill nowdays.
No, I'm taking a break from FT currently, and looked after some smaller projects.
As on the gaming side, this means I grabbed a copy of Postal (now as it exists, and it's free), and my long-forgotten Sonny-series (hey, i'm actually pretty good in that now).
Related to this I've checked Sonny3 is coming out or not, as the first came in '08 and the 2nd in '10, so it'd be time. Sadly the developer suffered cancer, so another year delay is expected I think, but it seems he never forgot the responsibility of that :max: I call that devotion and care!
But just for the heck of it I've tried out another series (Sinjid 1-2) from him, and it was ok.
Also read a lot, like The Dark side of the Sun, or Swamp Thing from the "new 52" wave comic books.
Cheers yoga!
PS: if you'll want to play FT multi with me send PM to match date, also how many points we'll spend on our characters! (also tell what level characters we'd use)

I am glad, You are OK now, baraton!
:D
AB is boring place without You.
You are good in many areas not only in Sonny series.
Now i am reading R.L.Stevenson book - David Balfur.
Pls. give me some more time for FT multi.
I have to start this gem SS2. I have to run the last version of Warelock:....
..and i know i am foredoomed in this battle- FT. But i am the brave and even with one stone in my hand i will stand up against You.
Greets, Dear twillight
Hungary Forever!!
