View Full Version : Abandonia Games Without A Manual, The List

Wired
04-02-2005, 01:17 PM
So, after much work I finished the list of the games on Abandonia that don't have a manual, the way I thought this should work (though I'm open to suggestions) is that people post in this thread telling which manual they've uploaded or are making. Then I edit the main post so everyone can see what's happening.

I was thinking something like this:

Name - Uploaded PDF (or txt, makes it easy to see what kind of manual was sent)
Name - Making PDF
Name - Scaning Manual (If you can't make PDFs the images could be sent to someone who can)

This is then added behind the game in the main list (in bold :D).

So without much further ado here's the list:

I would suggest that every pdf manual would come with a duplicate txt counterpart, so DOS users can read them

Wired
04-02-2005, 01:28 PM
On that note, I was planning on just scanning the pages and then combining them into a pdf file (after a bit of work fixing the images in photoshop)... actually I don't really know how else to do it, never did make PDFs before.

I don't think 5 Days a Stranger and 7 Days a Skeptic have manuals so they should probably be removed from the list!

I can scan Jones In The Fast Lane and Space Quest 1 VGA.

I have a photocopied Civ 1 manual here somewhere too, but I remember there were issues with page ordering or missing pages. I'll have to check into that one more.

Can we search for manuals on the web? :help:

Wael
05-02-2005, 08:33 AM
Assumably not,
Since we would need a permission from the site to use them -

But then again if itīs an original pdf manual that came with the game disk/cd,
and has no [This was brought to you by the HotU] markings,
it shouldnīt be a problem /-

But with scanned ones - a problem /-

I know a site for the classic sierra games with the game arhive the manual (if available) and the box.

Tom Henrik
05-02-2005, 09:35 AM
If you are thinking about spacequest.net or reviewgames.com, then we can't host those manuals.

Frans (from spacequest.net) is the man behind the scanning of those. Whereas the bastard from reviewgames.com stole his manuals and is hosting them on his site. He refuses to remove them, but they do in fact belong to Frans (who have asked us not to place his manuals up, and we respect that wish).

I also think Ultima 6 has a manual - but inside the zip. Or was it Ultima 7? Man, I'm losing track here.

I have a few of those manuals, somewhere. Pretty sure I at least have most of the old Sierra manuals, and the Zak McKraken one.

Let me see if I can find the boxes they're in, and what exactly I have. If I find them, I'll make them into PDFs.

I actually typed up Kings Quest 4, The Perils of Rosella once upon a time, I'll have a look for the hardcopy, if I find it I'll type it out again, be smaller then PDF's... unless thats specially what your after.

Also had the Robin Hood - Conquests of the Longbow original manual... I'll have a hunt around next time I go home, it has heaps of neat info in it, but last time I checked all that was in the box was the floppies and a advertising cover

Cross your fingers for me :ok:

We would rather have PDF's

The Niles
09-02-2005, 11:54 AM
Yes, having only one format in which we provide manuals is better then several different ones. Even if you never use the enchanced abilities that PDF's have it is better to make a PDF out of the manual then to make a simple TXT file.

Wired
13-02-2005, 07:00 PM
Ok, I've scanned the manusls for:

Ultima 8 Pagan
Little Big Adventure
Heimdall 2
Fate of Atlantis
Cruise for a Corpse (not all)

Thing is that I lost all motivation to actually finish making them into PDFs, so it may take some time... (I'd rather play games than making PDFs, I'm funny that way I guess).

I also just bought Ultima VII: The Black Gate and Ultima VII: Serpent Isle so at some point in the far distant future I may feel the urge to scan those manuals too. Maybe.

Since I am a die-Hard adventure gamer so, I can help you in that genre only, except:

Cirque de Zale (because its a freeware game)
Daughter of Serpents (because I have the manual for 'The Scroll')

Hero Quest (because I have the manual for the VGA release)
Hugo Triple Pack
Maniac Mansion Deluxe (because this is a Fanmade release)

hmm. i have original copies of the manuals for NetStorm, Jazz Jackrabbit 2 and probably those for Civ 1/2, GTA and maybe Colonization. all but one of them are at my parents' house though, so it might be a while before i have chance to scan any of them (plus i'll have to remember...) but i'll give it a try. I also had a CD at one time with a few things on it including Populous and Space Hulk, which may or may not have had manuals on it. Ah, just found that CD next to my PC - it features Yeager's Air Combat, Space Hulk, Hong Kong Mah-Jong Pro, Wing Commander Academy, The Savage Empire, Seven Cities of Gold, Populous II, Ultima VII, Shadow Caster and UU, but no manuals as far as I can see :(

BTW if any of these EA games are now abandonware and not already featured (at least 3 of them are good...), let me know if I can do anything to help you get hold of them!

/resists temptation to install Populous II for fear of not doing any uni work for a month...

If I might chip in here: I noticed that the list contains several games which never had a printed manual in the first place (for example Wings of Fury Remake, Cirque de Zale, Maniac Mansion Deluxe, Final Fantasy - Endless Nova and Ancient Domains of Mystery). Wouldn't it be easier just to remove those games from the list?

Bobbin Threadbare
09-07-2005, 10:13 AM
Umm.. for Maniac Mansion Deluxe (cuz it's a re-make) maybe we could have the original MM manual. Just a thought consiidering that the original MM isn't on there.

A. J. Raffles
09-07-2005, 10:19 AM
Hmm, if I remember correctly, the original Maniac Mansion "manual" was just a piece of paper explaining the controls. I don't think I still have mine, though.

Bobbin Threadbare
09-07-2005, 10:49 AM
It didn't just explain the controls if it was i piece of paper. If you got your copy not from Day Of The Tentacle. The lame-o-copy protection thing was when you open the steel doors upstairs there actually closed. To open them you need a manual which has all the codes in. The codes are much like the Zak McKracken one. BTW, I found a way to slide past without even using the codes in Zak.

A. J. Raffles
09-07-2005, 11:15 AM
Oh, you mean that Nuk'em Alarms thingy? That one I've got, I think. I never got very far in the game, actually, so I never realised that's what those codes were for. :D Would anybody be interested in that, then? I suppose those codes won't be needed to play the remake, though, right?

Bobbin Threadbare
09-07-2005, 11:35 AM
Nope, you don't need the codes in the re-make. And since no one got the LucasArts re-make or bought the original (that I know of) they either got it from Day Of The Tentacle or MMD. BTW anyone ever play the Maniac Mansion Mania series? Quite fun. Though a fair bit of them are only German. Same people that made MMD.

Well, I have a book from an Interplay RPG Collection titled "The Ultimate RPG Archives." Within is a collection of manuals from twelve different games. Two of them appear on your list. If you don't mind getting the manuals in this form, I can try and scan them and covert them to PDF.

The first I have is Wasteland. It weighs in at 47 pages but I think I can cut that in half as the book is small enough to fit two pages per scan. No pictures, but it does have the paragraphs that you need to get important story points. However this is an ESA protected game, so let me know if I should go through the trouble.

The second contained in this massive volume is Ultima Underworld II. Since someone else may have already scanned and submitted it, I will await confirmation before doing so as well. This manual also includes the reference card as an integral part of the manual.

So again, if you guys want either of these, let me know. I will be more than happy to submit them.

Tom Henrik
26-08-2005, 08:12 AM
We can host the manual for ESA Protected games, no problem. So please share the Wasteland manual with us.

And as I haven't heard anything about an Ultima Underworld manual being submitted, please share that one with us as well :ok:

Thanks in advance!

Todbog
31-08-2005, 03:39 AM
Ok. In the process of digging my scanner out of storage, I managed to find my cache of manuals. I still have a few caches in other places but I found a few more you guys need.

Space Quest IV: I have the Space Piston Magazine that came with the game. It
is in full color, so should I scan it in color or simply go greyscale?
Ultima 6: I have the compendium that contains useful information for the game.
It has the spells list as well as needed reagents and things of that
nature.
Sim City 2000: I have the manual and it is a hefty 140 pages.
Eric the Unready: Forgot I even had the game, let alone the manual.

Finally got a day off so I will scan these in as well as the Wasteland and Ultima Underworld 2 manuals I have and hopefully will submit them by tommorrow.

Tom Henrik
31-08-2005, 10:29 AM
Please try to use colors (and as for the Sim City 2000 manual, you can work with duckpatch. He has also offered to scan it. If the two of you share the scanning part, you'll only have to scan 70 pages each :ok: )

Todbog
02-09-2005, 05:01 AM
Ok. Wasteland and Ultima Underworld 2 have been uploaded.

Digging through my collection, I found my Battletech: Crescent Hawk's Revenge box, so I will get that manual up. Somewhere in my collection I also have a Realms manual as well so if I find it I will submit it.

Using full color scans for the manuals as appropriate (the Space Quest IV manuals weighs in at around 90 mb :D ). Whenever you get around to looking at them, let me know if I could do anything to improve my submissions.

I have already scanned the "Flight of the Amazon Queen" manul (just to trie how to do a PDF), sendig it to you shortly.

I may have more manuals and Boxes but need to check them out because they are from Amiga version. However I think they also are for the PC versions of the games.

Is it illegal? Sorry then. I didn't expect Home of the Underdogs to be an illegal manual hoster. Deleting on your request, might be handy to delete it in your quote as well.

well this isn't exactly legal site either. And scanning and publishing manuals without copyright autorization is also illegal... which brings me to question: why not take manuals from other sites?

Game companies are bound to support their games (what they are not doing) so spreading original manuals is not illegal (but selling). Spreading manuals of other sites often causes trouble so we are safe when we scan them privately and exclusively for Abandonia.

Finding this website was a real nostalgia blast!
Do u still need manuals for:
Railroad Tycoon
Colonization
Ultima VII & VIII
Civilization I & II
I have them all complete in original boxes, mainly 5.25" disks - which are pretty useless I guess.

Hey all,

I didn't realize how rare the manuals for some of these are. Off the top of my head, looking at the list, I have the following manuals:

Gobliiins
Gobliins 2
Mixed Up Fairy Tales
Mixed Up Mother Goose (old version, I may not have the manual anymore)
The Adventures of Willy Beamish
The Island of Dr. Brain

Would anyone be interested in me making PDFs of these and submitting them for the greater good?

On a side note, would anyone just want the map for Island of Dr. Brain so that they at least can play it?

How do you make PDFs? I got "Interplay's 10 Year Anthology"

Above book includes short (or long) manuals for:

Star Trek: 25th Anniversary
Castles
Out of This World/Another World
Dragon Wars
Mindshadows
Tass Times
LotR: Volume 1
The Bard's Tale
Wasteland
Battle Chess

You could upload the scanned JPEG's and arrange with Kosta that they'll be handed to someone else to make them into a PDF.

BTW, I just saw the Ishar series being on the list. Here's hoping that my CD's didn't deteriorate in last 6 years...

Hi everyone, first post!

Just wondering if there's an up-to-date list of which games need box scans, manual scans etc? I have a pile of old games and the manuals at home and would be happy to help if any of them are needed!

Reup

The list in the first post is more or less up-to-date as far as Manual scans are concerned. For box-scans I'm not really sure, but afaik there aren't that many games that DO have them, so if you post your list (if it's not too long), I'd me more then happy to tell you which ones are still needed.

And thanks in advance for the help. We need more first posts like yours :D

I'm not at home right now sadly! But I will be at the weekend, so I'll see what games I still have floating around.

Just thinking from memory, and looking at some of the games on the site.. I think I might have the manual for Constructor lying around. And I have the box for Reunion. And probably boxes for other things too. Not sure what else but I'm sure I'll have some more games that are on the site. Anyways I'll take a look at the weekend! Always looking to help out if I can :ok:

Greetings.

I have MDK's readme files that are on the game CD. They're .txt files in 6 or 7 languages that include the manual, along with the EULA, How-to-Install, etc. If you still need/want them I may upload them.
The version of the game I have is a budget one, from Virgin(SoftKey?), I think. I was disapointed they didn't included a pdf version of the manual, but hey, it's a budget version, after all...

True. Manuals are a lot of work. They sure make for a more complete and enjoyable game experience, though. Sometimes they are the difference between being able to play a game or getting too frustrated trying to figure everything out and giving up.

Where I'm at (Iowa in the US). They are not legally allowed to reprint anything with a copyright on it. It is not illegal to make a copy of it as a backup or replacement but it is illegal to do it for profit. Since they charge for the service they told me they are not allowed to make it for me. I can pay them to use their equipment and do it myself, however. Strange but true.

In Germany teachers are not allowed to make copies of schoolbooks (there never are enough), but do they adhere to that? No! Become a teacher and be an example for young people. Wait, now I know why I'm in this half-illegal abandonware thingy, and when ESA and the police come knocking I'll send them to the teacher's lounge. :sneaky:

I can make PDFs of the manuals for Silpheed, Descent, Wolfenstien 3D (the CD-Rom re-release version that also has Spear of Destiny on the disc), and Wing Commander. I've never made a PDF before, but I have Photoshop and a scanner, and I can't imagine that it's insanely difficult.

Should I get started on that, or are manual submissions in limbo at the moment?

Geezer
26-01-2008, 12:26 AM
I would guess that if a game is protected by the ESA that manual copies are also forbidden. That would eliminate quite a few of those as needing manuals. Is this list still being maintained?

No it's not so you had better check on the status of each. I have a lot of manuals I have done and can do but it takes a while for them to get put on the site. There must be a lot of extras waiting to be added. You might want to make sure that nobody has already uploaded something that hasn't been added to the site yet.
