There's an interesting blog called Super Adventures in Gaming (http://superadventuresingaming.blogspot.com/p/game-list.html), there are reviews of various games including those that might be considered quite bad (by the reviewer or by the reader).

They say original copy of Cheetahmen game is worth more than 1000$. I wonder why anyone would like to have one...

A collector, especially one with OCD ;) "Gotta catch 'em all!", you know. Take all those trading card games: they build a new collecting fad out of nothing, people flock to it and buy that booster 100x times to get that ultra-rare card = profit.

And people call me crazy because I want to dig up a movie from the archives that, what requires about $200 (at least I try to find a couple of people to split the cost).

I am now watching that cheetahmen vid and my question is, is this game working at all? Seems to be more a presentation of a vague idea, sketch level, rather than a working game. Or is the graphics supposed to flicker like that?

Well....yes and no.

No, as in this game is probably not in a total finished state. Cheetahmen 2 was never released and all thats left are prototype cartridges, explaining why its so rare and valuable.

Yes, "technically", meaning that most of this game is based on the original Action 52 Cheetahmen game, which itself was called a finished product. The original game works, looks and plays like crap. So even if they had time to finish this properly, it wouldn't have been much of a improvement.

Having played Action 52 I still don't believe Cheetahmen is anywhere near Plumbers Don't Wear Ties' league in terms of the title of Worst Game Ever.

Still, it's incredible that people want to own cartridge of prototype of product that was such a low quality.
I know that rarity = value, but logically it should also matter WHAT is rare, not only the rarity itself. It reminds me that my father collects coins and a few editions had production mistakes on them (like a missing letter or one element upside down), which made a coin with this mistake worth much more than a proper one.

For sure, I would not hunt for having a product that is known to be crap or something that was a failure even on design stage. As for mentioned collector cards, what is the purpose of buying a rare card that, for example, is much weaker than common ones or has generally crappy design? :dislike:

I had to look up that title. Why? WHY did you mention that title?! WHY did you make me look it up?! It is not a game. It makes absolutely no sense. Right now I have a zig zag mouth to go with my bewilderment.

Actually, it looks interesting. It makes sense especially after reading this quote:

Kitano hated video games, and apparently decided to use this opportunity to make sure everyone else did, too.

It's not a game that was designed to be good and was made awfully bad, but a game that was supposed to be bad from the very beginning :omg:
We must admit that the creator had his mission and he did it great in job good in his own wicked way.
I almost feel like trying to play this game

PS. Knowing "Takeshi Castle" show also helps to understand the idea. No wonder that creating a game on the basis of THIS show (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGuYojcmZpI) had this result.

"Intentionally bad" (versus "poorly planned/executed") is hardly a redeeming quality...

The fact that this thing (http://www.mobygames.com/game/progress-quest) shows you how pointless is grinding in (online)RPGs doesn't mean it's good. By the way, it's not a game, as it has no interaction.

I think both linked game and Takeshi Castle game are hard to be called "bad games" as they are more intentional jokes than real games (especially this Progress Quest)

Nowadays there are many similar creations around, but in most cases they end up being small flash applications to play on-line...
(simulator of pissing into the toilet, priest catching money on a plate, etc.)

Reminds me a bit of this one (http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/moraffs-dungeons-of-the-unforgiven), although the latter is actually more interesting and even captivating for some degree and time, however weird and of low design quality it might be.

Regarding Takeshi no Chousenjou, or however you write it in in romaji, I think the reason why the game turned out like that is bit different. I dont think Takeshi ever hated video games, especially how Takeshi's Castle is a bit like videogame and it even has its own proper videogame adaptation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=me6mx3-pVRY). There's also a third Famicom title under his name, which is a boardgame. Both are humorous, but neither have unreasonable stuff like in Takeshi no Chousenjou.

The fact that Takeshi was drunk during the creative meeting is the real reason why the game turned out like this. Since he's big celebrity (seriously, check out this guys wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Takeshi_Kitano). He's done it all) and Japanese are big on respect, they just wrote down everything he suggested and tried to implement them in the game.

And what its worth, there's a huge cult following for this game and its really unique for its time. In what other 80's Nintendo game you could punch your own boss, get a divorce from your wife and you had to sing karaoke in order to progress?

And finally, Japanese had games more awful than that. Like Bird Week and Bokosuka Wars

If the whole Ming family juggled their jugs, it wouldn't make one toss of a difference I'm afraid.

After watching all 10 YouTube episodes of Let's Play It:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLV7Q8370is
(yes, masochist detected) :woot:
I must say that Isle of the Dead is not that bad.

I mean, this game has graphics you can stand, sound that doesn't hurt your ears, even has some plot and humour! It's just encridibly boring and that's all.
Moreover, it's not very buggy - it seems that the game looks more or less exactly the way the designer wanted it.

In summary, I don't think it should be found among "worst games ever" because it seems it's not even in TOP100 of most idiotic games of all times :p

Play it on your own and enjoy the horrible hitbox, repetitive enviorments, useless adventure elements and instadeath fun. :p
