I once had this game on a demo dics. It wasn't a dos game though. The game was kinda boring though. Are you talking about the afterlife were you contol heaven and hell as god?

Eric20

Yep. it is. Alot of people didnt like it for some reason.. But I used to love that game.. I wish they had made a sequel.

Tom Henrik

You can buy it....
Sad, but true...

It seems our american friend will have to spend some of his hard earned cash, in order to get the game.

Tom Henrik

Ok?

If this is true, then it seems Afterlife is another one of those rare LucasArts abandoned games....

I'll see what I can do :)

Eric20
29-05-2004, 03:49 PM
Im afraid it is.. I've even emailed them, and they told me that it could not be purchase anymore.

Ioncannon

I remember playing the full version once.
I got it free with a PC magazine... I don't know where it is.
I think the main reasons I simply threw it into a drawer were:
-It was probably in a french magazine and thus the game was in french
-it was boring (objectives weren't very clear and the effects of the 'buildings' you placed weren't very clear either)
-like sim city, only less

EDIT: and from what I've read the reviews agree with me.

the only good thing I remember was the fact that Hell was the exact opposite (for example in hell it was your duty to create insane roadpatterns and thus create trafficjams...)

Tom Henrik

This game is BIG!

I found a file... (eMule) and it is 133 MB...

Do you know why it is so big, Eric?
Is it filled with video-clips?

Stroggy

I know there are 2 advisors in it (Jasper the demon and an angel) perhaps they are aniamted files.
and perhaps some special buildings have animated files aswell (never played that far to find out)

Tom Henrik
31-05-2004, 11:38 AM
Yes.
Now that you mention it I remember those two.
Jasper Wormsworth & Mr. Goodhalo.

But I do believe there must be more animations in the game. Maybe some of the buildings have animations too, like you say.

Or it could be that the intro and closing videos are spectacular...

Eric20
31-05-2004, 02:45 PM
Yea, I believe they the helpers were animated, they also had voice.. Theirs a video intro. But besides that, I dont recall much video.. Btw, it was Miss Goodhalo, it was a she angel. lol

Tom Henrik
31-05-2004, 04:08 PM
Well.

I'm getting the game, anyway.
I could try to send it to you when I have it, Eric.

Tom Henrik
31-05-2004, 05:23 PM
It will take me about a day to get the game...

You think you can wait that long, Eric? :P

Tom Henrik

Sure thing.

Tom Henrik

The file I downloaded from eMule is not going to help me (or you) at all. It consisted of a single large .bin file... That was all. :(

I'll keep searching the net.
I have started to want the game for myself, so I will not quit easily.

As usual, I'll keep you informed.

The Niles
02-06-2004, 06:19 AM
you need to burn the .bin file to CD and then you will have a working CD from which you can install.

FreeFreddy
02-06-2004, 05:02 PM
Even if burning that .bin-file on CD, how would an .bin-file install the game?

Eric20
02-06-2004, 05:11 PM
Its an image file. When you burn it to the cd, it burns the game. So then when you put the cd in the drive, it loads up the setup menu.. an image file contains an image of the entire game.

The Niles
02-06-2004, 06:05 PM
Exactly. With a bin file however you also need CUE file most of the time. There are ways with which you don't need it but I'm not sure how to do that.

Tom Henrik
02-06-2004, 07:25 PM
Cool.

 Whoops!

I have deleted many .bin files....
Games I had downloaded previously, without knowing what a .bin file was.

That of course makes me feel a bit stupid...

But I know that now.

I remember playing a demo of this game once...it was like, a simcity kind of game, but you controled heaven or hell? And you had a counter of your lost souls, and you had to build the areas that they liked or something like that as people from earth died...any of this ringing a bell?

Kon-Tiki
03-02-2005, 05:00 AM
Sounds like Afterlife (http://www.mobygames.com/game/sheet/p,3/gameId,202/).

Ah crap, Lucas Arts

Borodin

Yes, that's it: excellent title. But why disappointed? I just found it for $4 on Amazon. Go for it!

ReamusLQ
04-02-2005, 04:50 AM
well, I was cursing the fact that because it's Lucas Arts, it is probably not Abandonware, and I'm a poor starving cheap musician so I don't like spending money on games too often (even four dollars.) Is it still supported by Lucas Arts?

Borodin
04-02-2005, 01:27 PM
I believe it's not abandoned. Sorry. Check other abandonware sites to see if you can find it.

The Fifth Horseman

We never had Afterlife for download.
I'm sorry, but our forum rules prevent us from helping you find a download of the game - LucasArts is considered under unlimited protection for the moment.

When will Afterlife be available now that LucasArts have left ESA?

Dave

LucasArts is considered under unlimited protection for the moment.

The only way is to ask for a special permission.

Always fancied a go at this one. Released in '96 by ex-ESA member Lucasarts, and a cursory check reveals only a single 'new' copy on sale on Play.com for the rather unrealistic price of £29.99. Should also be playable without an emulator on a modern system, as the demo's readme notes indicate that it was written to run equally happily in DOS or Windows 95 from the ground up.

For the moment, we're still considering LucasArts under protection due to certain problems a while back.

Isn't LucasArts still working? Did they abandon Afterlife?

I got this game for free in a magazine back in 1997 in its full version. It's a pretty cool game, but I never understood why it came for free since the magazine was the equivalent of about 5 U.S. dollars.

An advertising stunt is not the same as 'abandoned', they have payed Lucasarts for that stunt, sure thing.

I asked about the "abandoned" possiblity since this thread was done in the first place.
I understand the advertising, but usually they put just a demo of the game, not the entire game. It wasn't a retoric question, it was a real question.

The way this works is that the magazine paid LucasArts a licensing fee. LA agreed to that, since the sales of the game were dropping (or almost nonexistent), in order to get a little more cash out of the title.
The magazine might have ran a few more ads in that issue to balance the costs.

It's not really unusual - Polish gaming mags do it all the time, with between 2 and 4 full games per issue on a regular basis.

cool! I didn't know that. I haven't really noticed if we still do that around here lately since it's been a while that I didn't buy any of those magazines - they became very expensive here and we have the internet to tell us things now.
I loved that game tough. and it was all tranlated in Portuguese in a very good translation. They adapted the jokes and everything. It was a very funny game. Since I read this thread I'm trying to find where I put it... I hope I find it.

Thanks for the explanation :amused:
