You might remember http://www.fileplanet.com/ for being awesome, then being really annoying with queues before you could download and then turning irrelevant. Fileplanet hosts a lot of old demos, custom content and media from the ~1996-today era. It was one of the first file hosts of its kind.
Well, they are shutting down.
Note: FilePlanet is no longer being updated and is in the process of being archived.

Archiveteam http://archiveteam.org (the lunatics who downloaded Geocities, Yahoo Video and much more) is working on archiving all the files and accompanying metadata to archive.org .
If you would like to help preserve a lot of gaming history and you have a Linux server with a bit of space (50GB at least would be a start), check out http://archiveteam.org/index.php?title=Fileplanet
If this gets completed, we could recreate the FTP structure Fileplanet uses in the background.
