Yeah probably they still sell this game, but man, next to Doom in the early 90's, no other game was more popular at the time than X-wing (and its expansions) and the sequel Tie-Fighter. The first two space simulation games offered so much fun and strategy and for the first time allowed you to be in full control of a Star Wars ship. 3D in gaming was still a new thing, with "Alone in the Dark", Wolfenstein3D (then Doom) and X-wing as the milestones of new 3D era in pc gaming, way before 3D graphic accelerators became commonplace, and before Playstation existence. I remember seeing 3D on my 386 PC machine and thinking "no way! That's actual 3D!".
If ever there was an oldie hall of fame game that *should* be in the hall of fame of abandonware sites, its those two Lucasart games. The later release "X-wing Vs. Tie-Fighter" is an entirely different game, which was a 3rd in the series but I hear didn't quite capture the spirit and joy of the first two games.
While I already own these games, its sad that others can't enjoy these games easily. Unless Lucasart still has plenty of stock online and for cheap. Man, I wonder if my original floppy disks still work.... I'm almost afraid to check.
I'd also throw in Origin's Wing Commander games in there as they were awesome as well, but the Star Wars early space sim games hold a special place in my gaming heart. Anyone remember those cool training missions in X-wing and Tie Fighter? Man Lucasart should remake these games...so many great franchises they have let wither *cough* Sam & Max *cough*.
