Oh my god, Rollcage! I played the demo obsessively. Starting a challenge - taking a shortcut right at the beginning - landing not perfectly - restarting the challenge immediately - continue ad infinitum.
Now I have a game to play with my friend! :2thumbs: (If it wasn't for that short-cabled controllers... :wall: )
First is the camera, which is sometimes positioned too close to your vehicle - usually when you spin on the track - and cost you precious seconds while you get back to normal.
As far as I remember, you can change the camera. But it may very well be that the camera is unfortunate.

If you get this:
http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/3310/rollcages.png
(Rollcage needs to be installed from a CD ROM drive.)
Changed the instructions and attached a registry data file. If you don't want to make the changes described below completely manually, open and read it.
...you can edit your Windows registry ( -> [Run...] -> type regedit -> [OK]):
[S]go to create (right-click on the directory and choose [New] -> [Key] for each directory level)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Psygnosis\Rollcage\Ins taller
(it should be there if you executed the RollCage.exe)
(the space is made by the forums after 50 characters)
right click into the right frame and choose
[New] -> [String Value]
enter
[Source]
double-click on Source and type
X:\DISK1\
where X is an existing CD ROM drive
-> [OK]
execute the RollCage.exe
By the way: Could someone without ImageShack account tell me if he sees the picture?

edit: all in place and info updated now
and @luchsen: proxy can see it, so probably yeah

I had known about Rollcage since because of its gameplay and its soundtrack. One of my favorites.

Rollcage is awesome!
I just recently played it with some friends, because it's one of the few (good) games you can play with 4 ppl local. The controls can be very hard if you are unexperienced, but that's the only negative point about this awesome game.

I stand corrected for my first post. I meant Rollcage II. The predecessor is utterly frustrating.

First, I see the picture, don't worry.
But my problem is that I've run the batch file, and I've tried running RollCage.exe, but it doesn't run, and those folders aren't there when I go into Regedit. There's no Psygnosis folder. Do you have another way to get this to work, or at least a way to put that folder into the registry?

follow the guide on the review page, on the bottom. you can create those keys if they are not there
Usually you would use a .reg file to insert values into the registry, although here the drive letter will depend on each case...

I played that on PlayStation. Very addictive game indeed.

yeah, that's why i created the batch file which will try to figure out what is a cdrom drive letter first, using fsutil.exe taken from windows xp system32 directory
worked on both of my xp machines. however, i didn't have chance to test it on win7 :(

@Bukkarooo
Are you sure that you are in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\?
The registry is not edited by the RollCage.exe but by a Rollcage patch I executed.
I attached a registry data file. Just download it, change the extension from txt to reg and execute it. If you are suspicious, you can open it as a TXT file to read that it only makes the said changes. ;) Open and read.

luhcsen, unfortunately, if you use a non existent or hard drive instead of actual cd-rom drive, the game will b*tch and tell you that you need to have a cd inserted

I just noticed (under the shower) that I forgot to delete that line. I only wanted that the REG creates the directories for Bukkarooo.
I will leave it in there now but change the value to Change this between the double quotes to an existing CD ROM drive, e.g. [F:\\] (without the square brackets). I'll also rename it to Rollcage CD ROM error fix.txt and add a comment explaining for what it is and what you have to do.
I'll change my first instruction respectively (that the RollCage.exe doesn't create the directories, too).
It's still quite complicated. :(

fsutil.exe needs admin privileges--so does writing to HKLM.
There are also other ways to identify the disk--besides asking the user for the letter.

of course it does. but windows will just ask you to run it as admin, won't it. or what's the problem? you will have to write into registry anyways

It isn't more complicated than an average installation.
I look if I can hex the EXE.

D:
I loved this game when I was a child, but it won't work for me. Even after messing with the reg it still gives me the CD ROM error. I'm running Win 7 64bit. If anyone can help with this I will be eternally grateful.

Nope, these two cases (using fsutil.exe, and running a .reg file that tries to write in admin sections) fail without asking for elevation, :( at least with default Windows settings.
There are a number of solutions that require different amounts of work. I would vote for using Russ's script, advising that in Vista and higher it's necessary to right-click and "run as administrator" instead of just double-clicking. (Or if in XP as limited user, "run as..." and selecting an admin account.) Surely that isn't too much to ask.

I tried Russ's script, and it correctly registered my disk drive, yet I still can't run the game. T-T Again, I'm using Win 7 64 bit.

Can you make a screenshot of your registry at the directory Installer (Alt+PrtScn to copy the window, MSPaint or other picture editor to paste it) and post it here? Perhaps also give an overview of your drives.
Also, you could download the Rollcage patch here (http://hotud.org/component/content/article/42-sport/24697) and execute it. It won't work (just cancel it), but perhaps add necessary registry entries. Just a shot in the dark, though.

Thanks for the OS info. Try copying that registry information from
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Psygnosis\Rollcage\Ins taller
to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432node\Psygnosis\ Rollcage\Installer

Please report back whether it works or not, so we add this to the script.

:D IT WORKS!! Thanks man, finally I get to play my favourite racing game when I was a child.

:)
(Russ you know what to do. :P You can make the script guess if the OS is x86 or x64, although writing both registry keys on every system, x86 or x64, is perfectly fine too.)

dude, i have no idea how to figure out if someone is running 64 bit. can you try it? or just write both of the registries on every system? my upload sucks and re-uploading would take another massive amount of time

Why not make the script ASK it?
"Do you have a 64bit or 32bit OS?"
Also I think writing both values on a 32bit system can cause trouble.
(since 32bit systems don't do 64bit)
While on 64bit systems both fields are necessary to be filled if I'm correct.
Yes we could make the script ask the user, although it would make more sense asking about the drive letter. If you think about it, now that x64 is slowly but surely replacing the legacy x86 (32-bit), quite many people will be using the former, without ever knowing the existence of the two.
By the way, the script detects a CD drive, but if there are more than one, or for example the game CD is in a virtual mount different from the real CD, it may not work. It could be modified to look for a file that we know should be in the game CD.
I don't know either right off the bat how to detect the OS architecture, with a cmd script only that is. There's a Windows environment variable %PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE% that must inform about the hardware, but oddly enough there's none that informs about the OS, which is the only thing that matters to us (since x64 processors can have a x86 OS installed, and the long mode remains always unused; actually most PC processors are x64 since long ago, even if most of them are running x86 OSes).
There's also for example a %ProgramFiles(x86)% environment variable along with the usual %ProgramFiles%, that exists on a x64 Windows but not in a x86 one.
But on the other hand there's no harm in writing both keys. On x86 systems the "WOW6432node" name has no special meaning--it's as if there was a program or software manufacturer named like that. Keys in that particular part of the registry are read only by the same programs that write them, so it would just stay there with no effect on the system.
On x64 systems only one key is necessary, the one in HKLM\SW\WOW6432node\, because the game is a x86 program (actually from a time where x64 didn't even exist), that is run though WOW64 and sees the registry through the redirection described in the Microsoft KB article. If there were both x86 and x64 versions of the same program, each would need only one of the two registry keys.
Because the purpose of this redirection and the specially named "WOW6432node" parent key (as well as the %ProgramFiles% and %ProgramFiles(x86)% folders) is to allow x86 (32-bit) and x64 (64-bit) versions of the same program to be installed on the same x64 OS side by side, and having independent registry keys.

Uhm, the game files aren't on a CD. The game should work with any CD drive.
Ah OK I didn't know it, I haven't tested the game.

Okay, so I'm having a *slight* problem with the game (Direct3D version). The game works fine on my old laptop, but the graphics go crazy if I run it on my much newer computer.
Newer computer:
-WinXP with latest updates
-Newer dual-core processor (nothing impressive but hardly slow)
-4? 8? GB of RAM
-NOT using any emulators; Glide version works perfectly when I use nGlide but the Direct3D version's graphics go haywire, and the menu screens flicker. Using winThrottle has zero effect.
Laptop:
-WinXP with latest updates
-Pentium 4 processor
-512? MB of RAM
-NOT using any emulators; Glide version works at a decent framerate but with some mild gameplay lag, and the Direct3D version works perfectly.
Normally I'd be happy with the game as-is, but the Direct3D version seems prettier (or at least the shields are), and the Glide version restricts access to Championship mode for some reason (copy protection measure?).
EDIT: I also seem to be incapable of playing a game between the two computers, even though they're both behind the same router and use 192.168.1.XXX IP addresses. Connecting both to, say, 192.168.1.001, and setting up one as the server and the other as the client doesn't allow the client to find the server.
