View Full Version : Trouble Emulating Sound...

Well, despite doxbox apparently working fine - and no problems at all running various games, sound does not appear to be working.
I hope someone might be able to give me some pointers :)
I'm running XP and use on-board sound from the nForce 2 chipset...
did you configure the games to use a soundblaster on 220 irq 7 and dma 1 ?

not a lot to go on!
one thing to watch out for is occasionally on xp the sound driver can hang and you wont get sound.. reboot it.

Never heard of that... :blink: I'm happy to have a nice working machine here.
DOSBox always emulate Soundblaster even if you don't have a Soundblaster card in your computer box. Make sure your games are sound configured for Soundblaster or compatible.
It seems to be a common DOSBox newbie mistake.

I never heard of that either. :blink:
AdLib setting instead of SB works better for some games.

the only time ive seen that soundcard crash thing was when playing around with vdmsound a lot. possibly a bug in vdmsound. it happened to someone else too. but not with dosbox, its true.

Thanks for the replies :)
I went back through the installs, etc, and some of the games sound now works.
Apart from stuttering in Caesar 2 and still no sound in Dune.
Could someone help me with Dune?
I've done quite number of combinations of interrupt and dma, no luck.
Any advice?

Q: The sound stutters.
A: You're using too much cpu power to keep DOSBox running at the current speed.
* You can either lower the cycles or skip frames or get a faster machine.
* You can also increase the prebuffer in the configfile.
Q: What sound hardware does DOSBox presently emulate?
A: DOSBox emulates several legacy sound devices:
* - Internal PC speaker
* * This emulation includes both the tone generator and several forms of
* * digital sound output through the internal speaker.
* - Creative CMS/Gameblaster
* * The is the first card released by Creative LabsŪ.* The default
* * configuration places it on port 0x220.* It should be noted that enabling
* * this with the Adlib emulation may result in conflicts.
* - Tandy 3 voice
* * The emulation of this sound hardware is complete with the exception of
* * the noise channel, which is not very well documented and as such is only
* * a best guess as to the sound's accuracy.
* - Adlib
* * Borrowed from MAME, this emulation is almost perfect and includes the
* * Adlib's ability to almost play digitized sound.
* - SoundBlaster 16/ SoundBlaster Pro I & II /Sound Blaster I & II
* * Coupled with the Adlib, by default DOSBox provides Soundblaster 16
* * level 16-bit stereo sound. You can select a different SoundBlaster
* * version in the configfile of DOSBox (See Internal Commands: CONFIG).
* - Disney Soundsource
* * Using the printer port, this sound device outputs digital sound only.
* - Gravis Ultrasound
* * The emulation of this hardware is nearly complete, though the MIDI
* * capabilities have been left out since an MPU-401 has been
* * emulated in other code.
* - MPU-401
* * A MIDI passthrough interface is also emulated.* This method of sound
* * output will only work when used with a General Midi or MT-32 device.
I suggest you try another sound device if you can't manage to make it work with Soundblaster default configuration. Increasing the prebuffer could also solve the stuttering problem, but I'm not sure how to do that.
Could anyone help me on the issue of implementing VDMSound in DosBox, please? Every time i try to run dosdrv.exe from VDMSound folder my Dosbox crashes!!!

vdmsound wont run in dosbox, its for win2k or xp only.
dosbox and vdmsound are completely separate and never the twain shall meet.

As xoopx said, they are separate programs, both made to run DOS games.
DOSBox has VDMSound encoded in it's program and VDMSound is not requred if you are using DOSBox.
What game are you trying to run?
Thanx for help, guys! I just ran a few games in DOsBox,in which music didn't seem to work, but some other sound effects did work! For example, prince of persia...
Guess if sound didn't work in DosBox i should try running the game in VDMSound ! :kosta:

Almost all DOS games requre sound setup. Look for config/install file and for sound setup menu.
I did not try Prince of Persia, will do it a bit later. (I only played Amiga version of game :))
Edit:
I don't remember that this game had music while you play it.
Music works fine at title screen, and then sound efects also work fine.
There is no sound setup.
In my case, prince of persia's title screen and cutscene music works fine in VDMSound, but not in DOSBox! But at least it works somewhere :D

In fact, VDMSound is already built-in DOSBox and should not be used together as already stated by others in this thread.
