I searched the game, found the screenshot, got the name from the drop down and was Incorrect. Just so people know.

There is one detail in today's quiz sceenie that can tell you which game is the correct one.
And yes, if you input the correct game name, you get your PoE (as yours truly did, of course)

Oliver and Company was changed from & due to it being a bugged Screenshot before. Guess the bug is still there somewhere. These things happen guys, not much we can do about them. If you really want some PoEs send in a review for a game. We need reviews for a lot of games waiting to get onsite.

Both of them. First, I use Copy&Paste and Autocomplete afterwards.

I don't know why, but the quiz never accepts any answer with "&":

Oliver & Company;
Skull & Crossbones;
etc.

I know only (?) one person who gets his/her PoE (how???)... But I wonder if he will give us hint (secret technique)... *puppy eyes* :whistling:

All of those give you way more PoEs then the daily quiz.

It is not really all that important to me (lie). I do enjoy the minor sense of puzzle solving %26 getting PoEs accredited for answering correctly %26 listing things off that have '%26' in the sentences. :mischief:

I do value the residual side effects of the quiz though. There are so many more games out there that I never would have even known about if I had not looked at them while searching for the answer to the Daily Quiz

Unfortunately we can't do much, we reported the problem many times but they haven't solved it, and I don't have access to the source code so I can't even try to patch it.

After a little research, it turns out it has to do with URL encoding. It just means that certain characters need to be converted to a different code before they can be transmitted over the Internet.
"...Only alphanumerics [0-9a-zA-Z], the special characters "$-_.+!*'()," [not including the quotes - ed], and reserved characters used for their reserved purposes may be used unencoded within a URL."
You can get a list and read more (http://www.w3schools.com/tags/ref_urlencode.asp) about it if you want. It's kind of interesting (to me, at least) and to "Oliver+%26+Company ". Isn't "Skull+%26+Crossbones" the symbol for Piracy or Poison (death to the quiz, in this case).

It still doesn't fully explain why today's damaged tissue (lesion) didn't register. Perhaps this was the time it was damaged after the last quiz trauma. Wasn't that the fifth or so such incident?:sneaky:

I guess it really has little to do with the actual quiz itself, just something to be on the lookout for in the future. I'm going to view this just like it is another buggy game. Now that I know what the bug is, I know what to look out for in the future.;)

Forum is supposed to be about open discussion, emphasis on open. To me, this means listening to others is just as important is spouting out my own opinions. So...

If "we" already knew that, then I was not a member of the "we" when that happened. I knew something about the ampersand (&), but couldn't remember the number needed to replace it, so I tried looking it up on the Internet.

I didn't know anything about the The for 7th Legion, but that just leads me to believe it is possible that the data for that entry exists in two places in two different forms. If that were true, a == would never be possible since the information doesn't match itself.

I'm still trying to figure out why it accepts spaces which, according to theory, should technically be %20, but they show up as plus signs (+) in the URL. It's an opportunity for more knowledge and a learning experience for me, so I thought I would share what I discovered on the way.

Anyway, I was just looking at it from the viewpoint of a puzzle to be solved. I've heard that if you aren't part of the solution, you are part of the problem. This might not always be true, but it didn't feel right to me to constantly complain about not getting my PoE for the Daily Quiz errors without trying to do at least a little bit of research as to why.

The game is afoot kind of thing, you know? Hmm... there is no Sherlock Holmes smilie... :huh:

It accepts spaces because the quiz has nothing to do with URLs. It's a JavaScript application that compares your input with the title of the respective game. Either the JavaScript sees the ampersand as an operator or the site stores the ampersands in game titles as & or %26 to avoid an operator or an HTML error for other instances.


And to quote your link:
URL encoding normally replaces a space with a + sign.
...so it would even accept spaces if it would use the URL because the URLs have spaces in the raw data, but I hope it doesn't use the URLs - that would be ... beyond words.

It's a learning vacuum. I've read a 1000-page PHP instruction and forgot approximately 999 pages. For HTML, JavaScript and CSS I always use references. I should at least start a notebook for the problem solutions I reach, but I'm to unorganised to do that. *^_^

I did only check "7th Legion, The", "7th Legion%27 The" and "%37th Legion" (for an unlikely problem with a beginning cypher). I didn't think of that the game could have been "The 7th Legion". :doh2: Another cause could be a wrong relation between screenshot and game, but that is unlikely.

For every daily screenshot quiz, I follow these steps:
- Find the game page on site
- double check the screenshot vs. the main page
- select and copy the text from the game's title on the individual game page
- paste the copied name into the quiz form text field
- wait for the drop down response
- verify the correct response matches what I have pasted exactly
- select the response from the list
- verify the response now filled in by the auto-response list matches what I have pasted exactly (since the copy is already in my buffer, it is pasted in a new text window and verified)
- hover my mouse over the submit button
- lean my head back, close my eyes and begin typing things furiously at random until eventually the keyboard buffer overflows or the 'enter' key is pressed
- hope and pray the answer for the day is, by some act of other worldly power, correct

Maybe I misread your post but Bermuda Syndrome was yesterday's answer. Today's answer is .... well, I had problems with today's answer as well since .... instead of a "/" in the middle of the name, Abandonia uses a "-" in the middle of the name. (If you try to enter a name with a "\" or a "/", you get an error.)

As I mentioned in an earlier post. There is actually a picture its just that it is corrupted. Now depending on which browser you use for the internet it might or might not show the corrupted picture.

There is no problem with today's quizz. There are two form of choice because of the "The" tag, but if you compare the names with the Abandonia-version (english interface), the solution is correct.

But there is certainly no such problem as the same picture would apply to more then one game!

Please never tell the solution of the Daily Quiz on its day, even if you think the answer is incorrect!!! (And it IS correct today.)

Dave, it happens again. :) I am double-checked each picture, it was only one answer - and it says wrong. Check spelling of auto-fill, please, I think, it was spaces in the begin... but I can be wrong.

at exactly GMT+2 which is from Quarantine II but a minute later came the png file which is currently there

and when I answered the game that it came from I was ruled correct.

Sorry but I can't do much for that, the code may have little problems, but which code is perfect? :)

BTW we have started to update all game nodes too reduce quiz errors, it will take lot of time but the result is guaranteed.

Well, if you consider a .gif a wrong format, you still have tens of games on the site with .gifs or .jpg as their picture format instead of .png and even one game (Gobliiins) with .bmp as its picture format.

If you would like, I can give you a detailed list.

It looks like the problem occurs with .gifs that are recognized as .pngs

For example:
Back to the Future Part II (http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/589/Back+to+the+Future+Part+II.html)

If you try to save the 8th picture you'll see a file named:
Back to the Future Part II_8.gif.png

However .jpgs pictures are ok, same for animated gifs.

It would be great to have a detailed list, but it will probably take lot of time for you to prepare.

I don't think it's such a serious problem, I guess it's the result of multiple edits, substitutions and maybe systems modifications performed by technicians during these years. And no, I can't access the folders where screenshots are stored. We must use the interface to delete/modify them.
I can solve it easily, just need the time and your patience :)

Err... Dave, I think, it's correct .png, that named .gif for some reason. I.e. it's "asdf.gif", but actually it is "asdf.png" inside. Not .gif.png. :) This extension appears only if you'll try to save it in browser that already recognized "true" format. So you need only to rename file back to .png, not substitute it.

Thank you for your huge work cdnp! It's enough for the moment.

I'll focus my time on the ".gif issue", after that I'll go ahead with translations update (other source of glitches) and then I'll check if the screenshots that have a different name are a real source of problems.

However another good method which gave good result is keeping an eye on the daily quiz and report me problems, we found and solved many errors during this year :)

I am concerned about the game node for game 667; Tom & Jerry Cat-astrophe.

We are aware of the problem, and unfortunately it's one of those we haven't solved yet.
It's connected to special characters, especially the "&", but if you add the %26 it works.
Once done with the other fixes I'll try to contact the technician again.

Today's quiz's suggestion box offers two choices for the correct game One with arabic numerals and one with roman numerals. Since the game on site currently has roman numerals in the name, I chose the the roman numerals and was marked as correct.

I noticed that too. However I did not report it because the error was in the suggestion box only. Once I put in the name of the game which is included in the text in the screenshot I was marked as correct and I received 5 POE.

I noticed close to the same problem on Dec. 3 '11 when the correct answer was Frogger (3D) but when I typed in Frogger the suggestion box only offered Frogger and Frogger II - Three Deep. Though when I put in the whole name of Frogger (3D) it was recognized.

Oh boy!
From yesterday's partial problem, to today it is even worse.
I put in the correct answer oɔǝɐu ɹɐuƃǝɹ and it said that I was wrong.

Now since it did not accept the correct answer anyways even though I really put in the right answer and I hid my answer under a spoiler warning and only entered it obliquely, I hope that I won't be blamed for ruining the quiz for anyone else.

I really hope that these problems can be fixed soon.

Don't panic, that's the old issue with special charaters, instead of & put the %26, it worked for me.

Since other people posted while I was editing my post, here it is again.

As you can read earlier in the thread here (http://www.abandonia.com/vbullet/showpost.php?p=421708&postcount=25) and here (http://www.abandonia.com/vbullet/showpost.php?p=421724&postcount=26), it is a leftover bug in the quiz possibly from when they changed the name from "and" to "&". However today the quiz allows you to try again and to get the 5 Pieces of Eight use %26 instead of &. Take the answer from the dropdown and substitute %26 for the "&" and you will be marked as correct.

just for the record, when i entered the - obvious - solution, it came up with the right title. i chose this title from the dropdown, but it was shown as wrong. after checking on the forum, i refreshed the page, and, well, it let me enter another solution - which was accepted as wrong **** again. so i did refresh another, and then, finally, the same solution i had entered before (actually, i was copy and pasting from the menu before, since i expected something like that) did the job....

Don't panic, that's the old issue with special charaters, instead of & put the %26, it worked for me.
I will ask to solve this problem too, sorry for all these issues, but at least the database seems ok now. :)

The game of the screenshot for today's quiz does not show up in the dropdown suggestions. Happily though the quiz does accept the correct answer. I only tried the answer with the name completely capitalized as it is on site though, I don't know if it will be accepted with lower case letters.

Hello.
I was marked as wrong again today even though the game title is clearly in the screenshot. Maybe it is due to the nightmarish:sneakrete: subtitle that was given in the suggestion dropbox and in the games current name on on site but the subtitle is not given in the source screenshot on site which is ---- --_3.png. I had posted already (http://www.abandonia.com/vbullet/showpost.php?p=434107&postcount=119) a list of games that have had a subtitle added to the games name but the screenshot is without them.

I suggest we should record a new entity in everyone's personal account: the probably earned pieces of eight. Like in the aerial victories: if you can't prove you have shot down an enemy, they count it as a probable victory for you. I have many probably earned pieces of eight :smile2:.

That is probably because the quiz was changed in the middle of the day. I neglected to refresh my browser and the old Deja Vu screenshot showed up and I was marked as wrong again.:palm:

One other point. The game on site is called NHL Hockey 94 but the screenshots have the name of NHL Hockey 93 as I have mentioned before. Well from Dosraider's response the quiz seemed to work anyways. I couldn't check it out because as I have mentioned the old screenshot came up and I answered incorrectly again.

After entering the name of the series MK in the suggestion dropbox only the original game, II and Trilogy showed up as suggestions. The correct game which is 3 was not suggested. Though it was accepted when it was entered manually.

You know, this is not that difficult. I can write you a crap application in a crap language that will perform this function without failing most of the time.

It's still possible that your simple application wouldn't work in an old platform modified without a real criterion (and without taking documentation) affected by other problems of instability.
