This was first programmed in Fortran for one of those ancient, huge "microcomputers", with an ASCII interface (like a strategy roguelike). The guy who made it is a pretty smart cookie who single-handedly invented the D (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D_(programming_language)) programming language.
