View Full Version : Insert Save Disk - Murders in Space

The answer might be really simple, but I fail to see it. So I'm playing Murders in Space to review it for the site, and every time I try to save the game a "Insert Save Disk" message appears. What would cause this and how to solve it?
Now that I remember, Murders in Venice had a similar problem that prevented me from saving it, but now the issue is most annoying, because there's a very tricky space walk I have to perform, and running out of oxygen can happen really fast... I already died once, and the Game Over message told me "Now Earth has one new satellite, and that satellite is you!" or smth like that  Help is most appreciated.

What a b*tch to get the save/load working.
Aaaaah the joys of a poorly ported atari game.
That's how I got the save/load working: Go back to the ol'days of atari and the floppy merry go round !!
Copied all files on a floppy.
Mounted floppy drive in dosbox as A:\.
Run game from floppy in dosbox.
Saving:
Hit 'save icon' , switch 'gaming' floppy with an empty one
Hit F6 and give savingpoint a name
Hit enter
To continue game switch back to 'gaming' floppy.
Load:
Hit load icon
Switch 'gaming' floppy with 'save' floppy
Hit F10 to load savegames list
Hit F1-F2-F3..... to choose wanted save point and hit F6
You will get message 'insert VGA disk2'
Switch back to 'gaming' floppy to continue playing.
Maybe I remembered some Fx keys wrong, but don't think so ....)
I may hope you still have a working floppy drive ......but the gaming/save/load can work with a virtual floppy or an external USB floppy drive.
Fact is: apparently the game refuses to save on the same floppy as the game is, you need an empty floppy.
Savegames are named ****.mde , approx 13KB each.
Wouldn't save/load whatever I did when run from C:\ prompt
The game is not interesting enough to spend much time on it trying things out. WHAT A BORING GAME !!!!!!
[Edit]
Maybe that can help:
Game also runs in VPC2007/MsDos 6.22 and then you could use VPC's save state as kinda savepoint.
*maybe*

This worked for me:
install the game from c: to c:
install.bat c:
...and run the game from the new installation.

For some reason I thought I had a floppy drive on my new PC, but it seems I don't :\ I'll try out the rest of the suggestions soon.

:OK: @zirkoni
Works indeed. :D
Remark: the game folder must be mounted as C: and game must be run from c:\ root, no subfolders or it won't work.
Means that if you automount a virtual C in autoexec you have to unmount that first.
[Edit]
If you don't want to unmount your virtual C you also can mount the game as D: root and run the game from D:\
(again: no subfolders)
Works also.

TA: You probably could get away with using a blank disk image mounted with IMGMOUNT. I think I had one or two somewhere around.

I don't know about which game you're talking about (Venice or Space), but a simple reinstall of Murders in Space does the trick. I don't get what's wrong with the preinstalled version, but the problem doesn't lie with the crack or the missing inst.bat that gets added with the installation. So the issue's elsewhere.
Anyways, after installing the game either from the .ima file or from the same preinstalled dir the save feature works, even if the folder is placed in a subdirectory. :mhh:

Talking about 'Murder in space'.
Doesn't work with my version when it isn't runned directly from the prompt.
If I mount it as usual (c: and cd 'space') saving/loading gives me a 'disk error'.
Saving/load works when game is runned directly from prompt (C:\ or D:\ doesn't matter).
Must be that there are different versions on teh net.
Ah the joy of cracked/ported console games. XD
