View Full Version : Riddles and Brain Teasers
Hey people,
I noticed that a lot of you tried to answer the brain teaser that Titan posted (http://www.abandonia.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=294) so I thought it would be cool to try have another one. Maybe if there is enough interest then I can make it like a weekly or bi-weekly thing.
So, on to the first one... (A riddle this time)
Magnificent Seven:
Eight and five, last name and given,
We are one six six six even;
The first in cow, the last in oxen
Three in damsel, three in vixen.
Question: What are we called?
I'll post a hint next week Sunday, and give another week till posting the actual answer (unless of course someone figures it out).
Good luck...

Could it be the letters V, O, X, E, N, S & I?
These are the only letters that appear more than once in all the words, and there are seven of them :?
Titan

I know the answer.. but i'll just PM it to Mika :terror:
Muhahaha..
Tom: that's a good direction to take. Keep going...

I know the answer but i am not going to tell it ;) i'm serious i really know the answer.
:terror: :terror: yay new emoticon!!
Considering I'm going away for a week, I'll post the hint now...
One of five, I the only one,
One in cat, two in mitten,
Two are odd, five are even
Seven in all, one in seven.
Interesting to see that only 1 person has actually attempted to answer the riddle other than the people that already *know* the answer of-course.
Any takers? Come on Tom, you can do it ;)

WOW...i dont get this :(
Hehe - I see that maybe this one might have been a bit too hard? (I didn't get it either). So anyway, here's the answer:
ROMAN NUMERALS.
Explanation of the riddle:
The last name has eight letters (NUMERALS) while the first or given name has five (ROMAN).
Using each of the numerals once gives MDCLXVI, which is 1,666.
C ( which is found in Cow) is first of the seven in the alphabet while X ( which is found in oXen) is last.
Three of seven are found in DaMseL. Three are also found in VIXen.
Explanation of the hint:
I is the only one of five vowels among the seven Roman numerals.
C is found in Cat, M and I in MItten.
I and V are odd numbers. The rest are even numbers.
There are seven Roman numerals. One of them is found in seVen (the V).
Sorry Tom, you were close...

Lol, that's a weird, brain-breaking riddle. I would never be able to solve such one because the answer is that hidden that you cannot logically find it at all...
Well here's another one:
Weight in my belly, Trees on my back, Nails in my ribs, Feet I do lack. What am I?
Those with a keen eye might recognise this one...

Titan
17-06-2004, 03:03 AM
Where it's from?
Since i've got the correct answer, here is a guess... it's an OLD riddle then, perhaps something from 17:th century'ish?
Are you looking for a specific writer? is it a famous one?
eric10051981
17-06-2004, 03:14 AM
 !!! could it be....
a catapulting mechanism? like a 'trebuchet' from the game age of empires.. kinda make sense with the tree in my back (launcher), nails in my ribs (made of wood) and feet i do lack (using wheel).. but the belly stuff doesn't make any sense.. (weight = stones??) coz the stones are put in the launcher..
and what about the writer??  are we talking about a book here?
Eric: Nope - but good lateral thinking - try again.
Hint? Key is Ribs. ;)
It's source is quite related to this site.
Tom Henrik
17-06-2004, 05:14 AM
Hmm....
I think it is Kosta!
Weight in my belly
He eats too much Danish Cookies...
Trees on my back
He works as a part-time woodcutter...
Nails in my ribs
He had a serious accident, where he fell over a cliff... while on the job. And his rib-cage is now supported by nails...
Feet I do lack
He was carrying his chainsaw when he fell... It was a gruesome sight...
:P
(Actually I do not have a clue... Maybe because I just woke up, and am on my way to work).

FreeFreddy
17-06-2004, 09:46 AM
Now, could that be a cannon from the 17~ century? That cannon that shots balls?
Weight in my belly - cannonballs inside
Trees on my back - igniter cord (or perhaps people?)
Nails in my ribs - nails that support it's body
Feet I do lack - wheels
Right?

I dunno what it is but i really think it's something...that we use or see alot...It's just that kinda riddle...
Tom Henrik
17-06-2004, 04:09 PM
I still thinks it is Kosta...
All the hints fit...
(Except Titan's, but I do not trust him :P )
I mean... Kosta is somewhat connected to this site :P :P
(Ok.. I will be nice, now....)
Hehe. Ok to end the suspence :P The answer is .... A Ship!
It's from a very cool Sierra game called: "Conquest of Camelot".
Should I post another? Here you go...

Easy one..
Tom Henrik
19-06-2004, 09:48 AM
Too easy...
Even I got it
PM'ing you with the answer.
Too damn easy by the looks of it - all of ya got it!
Ok, here's one I find quite funny although also quite easy:
Many many years ago when I was twenty three,
I got married to a widow who was pretty as could be.
This widow had a grown-up daughter Who had hair of red.
My father fell in love with her, And soon the two were wed.
This made my dad my son-in-law And changed my very life.
My daughter was my mother, For she was my father's wife.
To complicate the matters worse, Although it brought me joy.
I soon became the father Of a bouncing baby boy.
My little baby then became A brother-in-law to dad.
And so became my uncle, Though it made me very sad.
For if he was my uncle, Then that also made him brother to the widow's grown-up daughter Who, of course, was my step-mother.
Father's wife then had a son, Who kept them on the run.
And he became my grandson, For he was my daughter's son.
Who is my Grandma?
Tom Henrik
19-06-2004, 11:58 AM
His grandma is either his dad's or his mom's MOM...
Havell
19-06-2004, 12:12 PM
I just drew up a family tree on a piece of paper. I think I have found the answer, his grandma is his wife because his father is married to his step-daughter and her mother is his wife
You got it!
Here's the proper answer (I found it quite amusing):
My wife is now my mother's mother and it makes me blue. Because, although she is my wife, She's my grandma too. If my wife is my grandmother, Then I am her grandchild.
Hmm. You guys are just too clever  I'm gonna have to find something a little more challenging.
PS: Hey Tom - I like your new avatar - brilliant!
Havell
19-06-2004, 06:59 PM

Tom Henrik

eric10051981

A farmer and his hired help were carrying grain to the barn. The farmer carried one sack of grain and the hired help carried two sacks. Who carried the heavier load and why?
FreeFreddy
20-08-2004, 12:09 PM
The farmer, because he carried one full sack and also the two others partially, where the helper only helped to carry the two, thereby only used to carry half the weight.
Puffin
20-08-2004, 12:13 PM
Sorry, gaur, but wrong
FreeFreddy
20-08-2004, 12:25 PM
Well, when the helper carried smaller sacks, then the farmer still carried heavier load... :hmmm:
Another way - the farmer was accustomed to carry heavy load, while the hired helper wasn't accustomed to such weight, so the farmer took the heavier sack and the helper took two more light sacks, so both carried the same weight in the process...
Either way, the real answer is always known 100%ly only by the one who asked it, so...

I hope Puffin doesn't mind if I post a new riddle.....otherwise he'll bite me to death
A shepherd owns a boat.
He must cross a river, and carry to the other side a wolf, a sheep and a load of vegetables.
He can carry only one item per crossing and can do infinite crossings.
The wolf can't be left alone with the sheep, and so the sheep can't be left alone with the vegetables.
How will he do?

Why on earth am I trying to solve a riddle for fun?! Anyway I think this is it:
First the sheep to the other end.
Then the wolf to the other end, while taking the sheep back.
Then move the vegetables to the other end. Go back to finally
Take the sheep.
Havell
23-08-2004, 10:38 AM
He takes the sheep across the river and then goes back, he then takes the wolf across the river, he then picks up the sheep and goes back to the first shore, he then picks up the vegetables and carries them across, he then goes back to pick up the sheep and puts it on the other bank. Job done :D .

This one is from Sofoklo's "Edip". Sphinge asked Edip about it.
"When it's morning, it has four legs,
When it's midday, it has two legs,
When it's sunset, it has three legs.
It is most agile when has less legs.
Who is it?"
FreeFreddy
24-08-2004, 09:53 AM
Easy one - it's a human:
1. In the morning he's a child so he has yet to learn to walk with the legs only
2. In the midday he has grown and learned how to walk fast
3. In the sunset the human becomes aged and cannot hold his weight alone on the two legs, so he has to use the going stick that supports his weight.

Of course I couldn't solve it in a second, therefore I have written too, that the more complex riddles only can be solved if you know the answer for them from somewhere else already. :) Else it would be almost impossible. Well, at least if you don't take your time and think about the riddle.

The Polish drives, 'cause he stole the Russian's car, the Russian wants it back again and the Turkish is there to buy the car off from the Polish(or like that, is alreay quite some time ago since I heard this joke).

OK...this requiires a little drawing.
Draw a 4X4 square. it represents a prison, with 16 rooms.
A most wicked killer, something like Charles Manson, but much worse, is imprisoned in the upper left room.
The prison guard sits in the bottom right room.
All others room are occupied by other prisoners.
The killer manages to get a passpartout to open all prison doors, so he starts to escape.
He is heavily psichically disturbed, and has 2 problems:
1- he HAS to kill every person he sees.
2- he is scared by blood (!), so he can't get back in a room where he killed someone.
The guard of the prison is the last person to kill(after killing all the others).
What's the route to freedom?
Tom Henrik
24-08-2004, 04:02 PM
Just a quick question. Are they all in motion all the time? Does the killer start to mave emidiately after the doors are unlocked? And what about the other criminals, do they sit still waiting for death to come?
My answer would be that he just sits in his room, lalling away, and when the guard comes to look for him. He kills him and escapes, but you said he killed ALL of his inmates. So that can't be right.
TheVoid
24-08-2004, 04:06 PM

No one moves, except the killer
Havell

P S. If he is afaid of blood why doesn't he just strangle all of his victims?
Tom Henrik
24-08-2004, 04:13 PM
If no-one moves. He makes them
He moves up to them while they are sleeping and drag them into the previous room where he kills them. Then he moves to the next room, and copy that method. At last he will get to the room diagonally from the guard. With one inmate to the right, and one to the bottom. He grabs one of them, drag him into the previous room. Enter the room with the other inmate. Kills him on the spot, and moves out to the guard.
TheVoid

Well, Tom, you're undoubtly a thinkin guy.
But you forgot he has to kill every person the same time he sees it.
How could he bear to carry his victims?
You must concentrate on the route.
K | p | p | p
p | p | p | p
p | p | p | p
p | p | p | G
This is the prison. K the killah, p the prisoners and G the guard.
The bars are doors. there are also door that lead up and down, but I couldn't draw them.

Your hint could be a riddle in it self

The shadow.
When you move, it moves...
When you talk, it joins in...
And it also mimics you when you are playing...
