View Full Version : Win98-not Enough Ems For "underworld"?
twist

i recently partitioned a 20gb deLL inspiron (1100) Laptop with XP-home on the originaL partition. i then instaLLed win98 on the new partition & tried to instaLL & run "UnderWorLd" but i canNOT get past the "Not enough EMS..." error.When i go into the "uw.exe" "properties menu/memory-tab/EMS memory-detaiLs" I get the message "Third-party memory-management software has not been configured for expanded memory ...bLabLabLa". After googLing the probLem & searching through past forum postings here - i tried reconfiguring my "config.sys" file 5 different ways; tried running it thru the "dosBox"; & even tried writing a "pif" fiLe. But so far NOTHING is working! what makes this even more frustating is that I successfuLLy performed this same partitioning operation on my desktop & encountered no probLems with "UnderworLd" or any of the other oLd games i've downLoaded. The whoLe point of putting a win98 partition on my husband's Laptop is for the "gaming". i reaLLy hope somebody can heLp me get past this snag.
pLeez heLp ... :crazy:
well dosbox would work.
but no ems on a new pc is a common problem. it's caused by the bios taking up essential memory for the ems pageframe.
There is one thing you can do about it.: Disable everything onboard in the bios:
this includes network card/usb/usb legacy.
then reboot and see if ems works. if it does you know the problem (one that can not be solved) else you can search futher.

If you run DosBox run it on the WinXP partition.
It isn't designed to work with Win98 - in fact I don't think it works at all with Win98. :blink:

back in the days, a lot of dos games gave people this kind of trouble (and worse) even though they had the right era of pc for the task.
dosbox solves all!

more or less.
There are still some games that don't run in it!
twist@ I didn't totally understand what you'd tried before so I assume you did try opening the program properties, going to the memory tab and setting the available EMS to the maximum! If not that might be worth a go!

sorry, i kno i threw alot of info up in one breath (so to speak). Yes, i went into the memory tab after opening the program properties & it doesn't even give me the option of setting my EMS - it sez "the computer is not configured for expanded memory in ms-dos sessions." Then when i click on the "detaiLs" button i get the "third-party memory-management software has not been configured for expanded memory ..." that i mentioned in my first post.

the fact that i can't "reach" my EMS settings because my computer isn't even configured for it is the most confusing piece of my probLem. So far i haven't been abLe to make ANY sense of it. i appreciate everyone who has taken the time to "ponder the confusion" with me ...thanx!
meThinx i'm going mad ...:tease:

You are supposed to have a special line in your autoexec.bat or config.sys to allow EMS on your machine (if you don't have any by default). I can't help you to make that file tough, I'm far from knowing this by hearth and my reference is gone ATM.

it runs fine on windows 98.
one game not working is not excuse to discard dosbox for that os.

Sorry. I misunderstood. :blink:
I was under the impression that DosBox didn't work on Win98!
I shall remember that! :D
Now I come to think of it - I don't even know where I got that idea from! :crazy: :crazy: :crazy: :crazy:

twist,
Open your config.sys file for editing (notepad is fine; file is in C drive, root directory (top directory).
Look if there is a line similar to this:
DEVICE=EMM386.EXE NOEMS
and change it to
DEVICE=EMM386.EXE RAM
Reboot computer and try game again.

Now I come to think of it - I don't even know where I got that idea from!Probably from the numerous persons posting in troubleshooting stating it doesn't work on Win98... ;)
Anubis: you got it right. If it's not it it's really close.

GOT IT :Brain: :w00t: !!! . . . . . :whistle:
i came back to share my Fix in case somebody eLse runs into the same probLem. In my search for an answer i was made aware that Laptops, & in particuLar, deLL Laptops have (as one tek put it) an "eviL memory gremLin". Adding the foLLowing Line to my Config.sys FiLe has (so far) banished my gremLin:
DEVICE=C:\EMM386.EXE 1024 FRAME=D000
I reaLLy appreciate the great responses i received here ... :tnx:
p.s. fun smiLies!!!

Comrades, I got Dosbox, I downloaded UW2, I mounted the folder containing the files of the game as C in Dosbox. I tried to run every bat com exe, but the game won't run. I have WinME, P4 1.4 Ghz, 512 DDRam, and I get the following error message when I type Uw2:
EMS Allocated
Cannot run underworld
Could not read Data. Error Code D001
This is the second time I downloaded the game, but it won't work. HELP!
