Yup guys and girls, I have a big request to you all. I want you to tell me which games made the biggest impact on you, what games made you cry, smile, feel horror or completely changed your mood, were giving you chills, thrills or that made you think different. I'm asking you to tell us all about magnum opus of your gaming experience. It's genre doesn't matter, nor the way how world reacted (it doesn't have to be a bestseller), only your opinion matters. Let us hear why these games were so special for you. Why I want to know this? I want to know which games should be played by a man, who truly believes that he's a gamer and is proud of it. Which worlds should be seen, which histoy should be known, which gameplay should be experienced. A list of games that should be known by a man who claims he's a "true gamer".
At this time my games would be:
Legacy of Kain Series -> Soul Reaver II
Why this title? Hell, first game in the series was isometric hack 'n slash, which could be a severe rival to Diablo. I didn't have the possibility to play this game properly yet but i will, because this is the begining of great history of a man who seeks revenge after his death and resurrection as a vampire. Second game was a 3D action platformer game with puzzles and open structure, but the biggest impact on me did 4th game - Soul Reaver II. Among pretty linear parts of games nad little tiring action sequences, game provided great story, crazy twists and time travel! Imagine that in first game we fight as Kain, but in second we are his nemesis, Raziel, who chases him through whole world. Once beaten enemies still exists in game world since we can time-travel, we can hear the intriguing story from both sides and affect it. I'm not even mentioning about possibility to switch between astral and physical world. Adding perfect acting voices, astonishing climate and music we end having one of the greatest game series. Its pity that the last part wasn't as good as I expected.
Fallout - What we would do without Fallout? It's obvious this game should be on the list. I won't be saying too much about it cuz everybody knows this game so I'll make it quick - good and refreshing idea of placing RPG in post-nuclear war (but not prime - wasteland took that place) adding tour-based fighting mechanic. What's more, everything is perfectly designed, making this game one of the best.
Front Mission - Had to put this on. It's isometric tour-based strategy. Here we have something different about future - all te countries are joining to create unions, yet wars are still pretty common. On the battlefields however, wanzers are playing the biggest role. Wanzers are gigantic mechs and we're taking role of pilot, who happen to be in pretty tough situation - his girlfriend has been killed on his eyes. Story gives us more situations like that, telling us that ways of fighting will change, but war is always a bad decision. I really like the way we can create our wanzers. We can customize our machines by exchanging parts like arms or body or giving special equipment like guns, missles or melee weapons (!). What's more whole artwork seems to be just perfect. Game was released on SNES in Japan, but there are some fan translations. Right now I'm battling through Front Mission 3 - 30 hours and still no end on sight :)
I'll post some more later. Right now I'm waiting for your greatest games that every single player should know :)

soul reaver, fine. but soul reaver 2? that's like a deranged offspring, carrying only the good name of the first soul reaver bringing nothing new but repetitiveness and less good gameplay
soul reaver 1, however, was one of the best 3d platformers i've ever played

I must admit that Soul Reaver II was something different from the first game, yet the second part somehow made my head spin by story. Characters seemed to me more "real" than in the first part, graphics, music and narration gave this specific feeling of gloom and decay, and we could met characters who have been killed in the proper timeline. Game was very linear, but I really don't mind when character development and evolving story are so immerse :)
Well, I'm waiting for you guys and girls to tell something about yours game of choice. Don't be afraid, this thread won't bite :)

Maniac Mansion!
It was one of the first games where you could switch between characters, and control their actions independantly.. Plus, it had tentacles LOL

Actually it's top-down, and it's more of an action game then akin to Diablo, but it is a fine game :) And a brutal one too.
Also, my entry would be Scorch: The mother of all games. Title says it all :D

Fallout, I'll agree on this.
Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. I'm sure I don't have to explain those.
Elite. Classic, I wouldn't be surprised if its legacy would live well over 50 years after its first relase.
Heroes of Might and Magic series.
Quite surprisingly, Homeworld (and its addon Cataclysm) took quite some time from me lately. In both cases, I got so immersed that it took me just two nights to beat HW and one more to beat Cataclysm. And that happens very rarely for me, I rarely spend more than hour straight doing one thing.

No Contest. Beneath a Steel Sky. I probably never would have got into games if it wasn't for the demo of this on my old PC. and then I spent 4 long years trying to find it again.

It may not be a PC game but Super Sario Bros pretty much revolutionised the platform genre. Not to mention almost single handedly end the video game crash of 1983.

I'd have to say, Wasteland and Empire.
Wasteland - because it felt like a completely open world that I could go anywhere and do almost anything with a great story to play along with.
Empire - what other game at that time offered such a great Hot seat game play for 3 people at the same computer. I must of played this game for years with my uncles, cousins and friends!

Fallout 2 - for expanding on already awesome and involving story and increasing the game size, time and fun dramatically. Also, thanks to this game and this game only my most favorite RPG kind is post-apocalyptic wasteland setting one.
Secret of the Monkey Island - the game basically redesigned the Adventure games genre. Thanks to it point and click adventures grew from interesting time killers to full size awfully funny stories. The graphics were not great in original (before the VGA update) but the gameplay... Let's say I play it to this day once every year or so. ^__^ Also, SCUMM engine... Come on, the games that followed SotMI for years used the mechanics and layout introduced by it!
UFO - Enemy Unknown - hugely progressed with the basic idea introduced in Laser Squad adding loads of depth, storyline and stategic/economic elements that defined the game and it's succesor as all time classics basicaly on the very day of it's premiere. I mean, what other game has so many fan and commercial made sequels that had never reached the level of original that is more than 15 years old now? Even very good turn based tactic games like Jagged Alliance based their mechanics on UFO's ideas.
Superfrog and Fury of the Furries - I know these are two totally different games but I belive both deserve being mentioned here. I played them initialy on my Amiga and then years later on a PC. I still do. Why? Simple, as much as the first one is my understanding of what proper "PC Mario clone" should be and how it should expand on the secret areas and multiple enemy kinds ideas the second progressed even further not only in the two fore mentioned areas but also added the puzzle elements as some of the levels not only required steady hand and perfect timing but also a lot of thought to it.
Frontier - I had some experience with Elite and some with First Encounters. But I've spend countles hours playing Frontier! I mean not only the game is huge (and I mean HUGE) in size but also gives you that uniqe sense of "living in space" thanks to it's open World sandbox kind of gameplay. And don't even get me started on the wormhole legends that were carried by the word of mouth on the game's golden days. It may have not been as huge success as UFO was but also spawned counteless more or less good followings like Privateer, Freelnacer, X series and so on...
Civilization 2 - Need I say more? ^__^ The game took what was best in first installment and built on it to create even better and more thorough experience. And when the Multiplayer Gold Edition was released I could not think of a better way to spend my free time. Well, I was pretty young back then and did not have a clue how to act around girls, so go figure why I was playing so many games. ^__^ There's not many more better gaming achievements in my opinion than seeing your small tribe progress to rule the World by fear and a power of Iron hand. Well, honestly I'm more of a peaceful tech based player but it just sounds lame. ^__^
SimCity 2000 - I know it's not the first SimCity game (third if not counting the addons) and not the best (opinions usually differ between SC3K and SC4 I belive) but it's the first one to be that in depth with the whole simulation and the first one to be so immensly enjoyable. I do understand the fact that original was available on nearly all platform of the time including C64 and Atari ST, but it's the 2000 version that really made a difference. What difference? The difference in understanding how simulation games should look like. They need not to be 16 color tiles and some charts anymore. They could as well be huge colorful Worlds (or cities for that matter) were things literally came to live, where cars rode the streets (and I'm not talking of crappy Streets of SimCity, even though you could actualle export your SC2K cities to it), buildings grew before your own eyes and the simulation whilst not losing in depth of all the charts, tables and statistics appeat to be "alive".
Pinball Fantasies - Not the first and not the most technicaly advanced but sure as hell the best Pinball simulation I have ever played on my PC. The tabeles were just fun and smartly laid out. There was a lot but not to many unlockables and game was very easy to pick up but darn hard to master. What else could one hope for in an arcade title!?
Mortal Kombat II - For many it's either the first part of MK or Street Fighter II were the definite fighting games of yesteryear. Not for me. Even though I enjoyed original MK more and liked the easy to master (on normal difficulty that is) gameplay of Street Fighter II, there was no other fighting game in the early 90's that I would've spend that much time on. Sure, more better games got released over the years since then & I enjoyed them as well but it's MKII that I played the most and literally strived to complete time after time. Funny enough, you would've thought that after playing a game so much I'd be good at it... The truth is, that now, after the years I suck at it even on the easiest setting. And I suck badly... ^__^

I would have to go with :
Starcraft/Warcraft 2 for RTS games
Duke Nukem 3d for FPS games
Morrowind and Fallout 1&2 for RP games
In my mind those games added the most to their genres. Then again they are really just some of my favourite games so I could be dead wrong.
