View Full Version : Total Commander?
Hi, folks,
Soon I was object of terrible virus attack when DL some audio. I ceased the attack but....
Since them when I press some of my disks letters - for example D:- this disk is not open but appeared window Open with which is very annoying.
So, I am forced to search for an alternative of Windows Explorer..
In a book of swedish specialist Michel Carbo (or Karbo) he said good words for Total Commander..I found and installed TC.
Would be so kind in a mean time to answer my Q:
Is this TC good program?
Because I am unable with TC to do next action: Right mouse button on file(s).
Then I do not see WinRar to archive this file?I have WinRar.
Maybe some settings or what?
TY in advance for your advice and time to help me..

you need to hold the mouse button for about a second or so
or you could just press shift+f10 on the selected file. or that button on your keyboard next to the windows one. you know, the one you never knew what was for
Russ, principally y like TC?

Configuration >> Options >> Packer. Click the ">>" symbol next to RAR packer and you'll be able to create RAR archives directly from Total Commander - select the files you want to pack, press ALT+F5 and choose RAR as the compression method.

it's good, but i use normal windows explorer. you can navigate via keyboard in it too, so it doesn't slow me down
but then you have these annoyings of explorer like copy dialog and such, it's just that i got used to explorer already

It's a matter of preference, obviously. :)
Also.
Since them when I press some of my disks letters - for example D:- this disk is not open but appeared window Open with which is very annoying.
Right-click the drive's icon. Click "Explore". There will be a file named "autorun.inf" in the drive's root. It may be set to hidden, so make sure you've enabled showing of hidden/system files. Find and delete it, and the problem should be gone.

i told him to do that in another thread already, he said it's not there though :mhh:

:mhh: But the system is trying to open a specific file instead of the drive contents. It's either autorun or something similar - and again: the file might be set to hidden/system; if our friend has not enabled displaying files with those attributes, then he won't find the autorun even if it exists.
Of course, knowing what exactly is the name of the file his OS is showing the "open with" dialogue for might tell us a lot more here.
Dear all,
Thank You for your support in my try to find decision of my problem after virus attack:
I speak bout 1 of 4-th my PC.
Connected in home net with router.
XP Pro
I open Windows explorer. OK.
Then I press one of letters of my disks named as YOU know C:, D:,E:, F:.
Now I do not see the contents of the disk, but new window “Open with and Choose the program you want to use to open this file..
Down are shown many programs ...
Yes, I know Explore opened the all disk..
Well, YOU – 5H, said good words for TC and searching alternative for WE I am asking YOU about TC. That's all, Szanowny Panie 5H :max:.
Yes, I know for hidden files. WE – Tools -Folders- View – Do not hide..

Yes, well... the fact Total Commander can replace WE entirely doesn't mean you should tolerate having limited functionality in WE.
Now I do not see the contents of the disk, but new window “Open with and Choose the program you want to use to open this file.. Under "Choose the program" there should be another line "file:" followed by the name of a file.
That name is very important - once we know it, we can start looking into what's causing the problem in the first place.

@Russ
Yes, SH+F10 show me the new menu with WinRar - Nice.
I started option Search in TC. And received
Autorun.ini 41 KB
Autorun.inf 45 B
and
Autorun.exe 7.7 MB
All these files are in my Windows 7 disk and I not del.
Russ, y mean that I must unhide the files, being in TC?
Because I did this action using WE.
I think TC did Search faster than WE. Its nice..

All these files are in my Windows 7 disk and I not del. you del autorun.inf and autorun.exe
and install a good antivirus on your win7 because you got owned by leaving either autorun on flashdrives enabled or downloading suspicious porn :facts:

y mean that I must unhide the files, being in TC?Yes, TC has to be set for that separately.
Configuration >> Options >> Display >> check "Show hidden/system files" >> OK
I think TC did Search faster than WE. Its nice..
Not only that, but it has a bunch of other features. You can search the contents of archive files, use regular expressions and also use it to look for duplicated files (very handy for my comic scans collection).
@5H

I am big fan of Total Commander. :)
And as you, yoga, used it anyway, set it to show hidden/system files as well and look into root dir of your disks. Any system/hidden file here (except disk C) will look suspiciously as for me. :)
Me, too, amigo.. LOL
My Master was 5 H..
YOU cant image how handy is for me TC..
How is possible such a nice program to be unknown for me??
Yoga - proud user of TC

Hmm, how strange - my reply was before all this discussion... either my Opera have really old cash, either you are very fast typers. :)
For me TC have three priceless options:
1. It could search even text inside files, even in most archives.
2. It have RETRY! I missed this option for scratched CD/DVD since Norton Commander times, and I am very grateful to Mr.Ghisler that he returns it to me. :)
3. It could made multi-rename numerous files by mask, with replace, etc.
Of course, it have much more options, but most of them can be found in other file managers. :)
P.S. I am, in Russia, use in need CureIt (http://www.freedrweb.com/cureit/?lng=en). It is stand-alone module of great Dr.Web - and I think it is best and fastest antivirus on Russian market. Actually, I cannot compare it only to Norton Antivirus, because I never had it. Others significantly worse. It updated hourly, AFAIK.
