I have downloaded the game... Inside the zip archive there is only the install program, a "readme" file and a folder with the manual of the game. When i start the installation, it stops immediatly saying that it cannot extract Intro.exe.

This is not the case: there are all files needed for install in the archive, but apart from install.exe these files have the "hidden" attribute. You must set the Explorer so that he can show hidden+system files too.

I am having similar problems, where the program will not install, as did Lothar.
I have downloaded the game... Inside the zip archive there is only the install program, a "readme" file and a folder with the manual of the game. When i start the installation, it stops immediatly saying that it cannot extract Intro.exe.
I have tried changing the attributes, but that doesnt seem to work either.
I really loved this game back when it first came out, and I have been trying to play it again for years. Help!

:help: Again, same problem, has anyone found a solution? Tried changing the attributes, but no luck. Running the installation in DOSBox if that makes any difference... Thanks in advance for any advice that can be given.

Just one question: Is it normal that the game is so slow or is it bacause of Dosbox?
If so, how can I manage this problem? The game seems to be cool, but it's not great fun when your armies move in slow motion.

:D I also had problems intalling FOG too.

To install FOG: A) Run FOG install.exe under dosbox(I did a mount c c:\dosprog)
B) In the FOG installation program, install FOG to a c:\dosprog\fog directory. Don't let the FOG installation program install to the default c:\FOG directory. It won't work because dosbox has been mounted to c:\dosprog so dosbox doesn't recognize c:\FOG? That's my guess why some people can't install FOG.

Actually it is a slow game. Don't expect something like a modern RTS in terms of speed. Think of it more like a lagging RTS or something. If you have ever played Command and Conquer Generals multiplayer and how in some games it sloooooows down a lot, that is the normal speed of the game, or at least the speed of the animation of it. It has nothing to do with DOSBox (which is a fine program) or whatever. Do increase the cycles of DOSBox though...

Still, if you think that it is a fery fast game, you might want to try UMS I and II. They are even slower. :-p

AI here is too dumb.
You can move all your forces excluding horse artillery at the bottom of the battlefield. Than you whipe out his army with them - becase he doesn't counter attack.

How to move the army in to the building? I have seen some of building were occupied by army inside but I don't know how to do so...
This game is really fun. The system and graphic are not so old for old RTS to play to day. In deed, it's great one for me who love napoleonic type war game. :ok:

Hiya, I was having the same trouble installing this game on my XP system. I solved it by moving the download (in its Fields of Glory folder) to my root directory on drive C, ie. so it wasnt in any other folders. Then when I ran the installe program it installed it with no problems at all :D

All I have to figure out now is how to run it :)

my Step-by-Step-Guide for anyone with install-problems

1. Extract the Archive to the Folder "Fields of Glory"
2. change the foldername to "foginst"
3. open dosbox and enter "foginst" and screw up the CPU-cycles
4. type attrib -h to remove the hidden-flag from all files
5. execute install.exe
6. choose the big install
7. when you come to choosing path do not install into "foginst" as this will cripple the installation and thus it won't work.
8. wait for the installation to complete (it takes a while)
9. after the installation change into the game-dir and execute fog.bat this will execute the sound-setup
10. choose Soundblaster 220 / 7 / 1
11. if the Game runs too slow screw up the CPU cycles once more [CTRL] + F12

Actually, I still have the original game. Its on 5 floppy disks.

But.
The game works, but without sound and the resolution is horrible on my 19 inch screen.

I tried to change the competability and also changed it to lower resolutions and at 256 colors. It remained so unsharp...

Can it be run in a windowed version?

Heheh I even have the manual. When you want to play it ask for a word in the manual by giving a page, a line and word number.

Anyone have a clue?

Thx.

:ok: they don't make games like they used to. Despite the bugs and command difficulty, the game is still great

if you are having trouble playing the game make sure you have dos-box and you install it using the dos-box. You should be able to extract the sound if you do this.

Make sure that you put the FOG folder in the C: drive, then in dos box you have yo 'mount c c:\fog' then 'install'.

Thanks abandonware for having Fields of Glory availiable for dl, can't get it to work on windows 95 anymore, too hard to install.

Hi,

I tried King Doms step-by-step manual, but my pc installs only 3 files with less than 35 kb.
Have anyone a idea, how i can play FOG?

Thanks

this game made me cry. it really did. It had so much potential. I bought it when it first came out and was so very very pleased that it had been made.... then I played it! worked with experts?!! I think not!!! Cavalry defeating infantry in square, column defeating line without difficulty, cannon defeating cavalry in hand-to-hand! I dont know what the game mechanics are regarding combat but it seems to be fairly random. for any strategy that you may come up with, it would be equally as effective to just charge all your me forward.

I cried big manly tears of sorrow that day.

(it's okay, I had a big manly handkercheif)

Remember that each unit also got other ways to defeat that got the right formation. If most of the husars died when charging the cannon, they can be repelled in hand to hand combat. + Square formation its to deal very special situations like a breaked line. I dont know how works the game´s engine but i use the colum to march, the line to fight and the square to "special" situations. :bleh:

I did follow King DOm's instructions, and for a change the install did complete! Still though, when I ran 'fog.bat' it answers
"Runtime error 200 at 1066:OF77.
Trouble starting up sound code."
So I get to the main game menu, without intro or sound, I get to choose battle, choose side then the whole thing freezes.

Square formation is for defending againt cavalary.

Similat game to FoG is Asterlitz: Napoleon's greatest Victory and Waterloo: Napoleon's Last Battle. They are derivate of Sid Meier's Gettysburg.

I'm not that stupid. I said I followed his instructions step b step..
It's a pain in the back with Win XP anyway, why is that that the install program doesn't recognize the settings in the 'config.sys'? I did change what it asked for, but it's still marked red in the installation menu. And it finds only 919 K memory, please, it's a P4..

If you say it... Anyway if i get directly assaulted by cavalry i dont will break my army´s formation to change all the inf from lines to squares. I use square when cav breaks in my sides or back and always that separete units goes ambushed.

After some unsuccessful efforts, today I tried something new.
I checked all files in the zip-archive, The biggest file was the fog.res. I renamed it to fog.zip an could open it. There I found all the files for the game. I copy it to a directory and try to start it ... and it works.
If there no way to install it, try it so.

I got the game for my 9th birthday. I am now 17. I really want to play it again as i am studying the Napoleonic Wars at the moment, and it is a really fun strategic game! However, on the installation it says i need 'files/buffers: 20/20' and i have files/buffers: 40/0, and wont install. Also, i have windows XP.

PLEASE HELP! I WILL BE SO GRATEFUL! :sos:

Use DOSBox. There's a stickied tutorial in the Troubleshooting forum that'll help you get started.

but i don't, all i do is click on an army and the screen goes blank, so i have to go back to the desktop with that windows key and left click close. recently i tried the game again and this time the side i chose went grey (like always) but then the screen froze and a continuous beeping noise sounded (kinda like what happens when too many keys are being held down but in one long continuous beeeeeeep

The game seems to be way too easy. I won the battle of Waterloo on the Napoleonic side and I assure you I am NOT that good. There are a lot of complexities poorly modeled, such as the variable effectiveness of the field commanders. If you recall, Napoleon lost Waterloo in great part because his field commanders were not able to carry his orders appropriately.
Fun simulation none than less and not bad for the ego either :)

Played this game to death in the 90's, enjoyed it immensly. As you will see from the manual this games ane manual is a work of love from real wargames fans, the detail in the database of units is outstanding, this game was the gateway for me to playing other major classics such as Sid Meyers Gettysberg and Antietam (still play to this day), all the Microsoft close combat series 1-5 and obviously the entire Total war series (ShogunTW,Shogun TW Mongol Inv, MedievalTW, MedievalTW Viking Inv, Rome TW, Rome TW Barbarian Inv, RTW Alexander, Medieval2TW, Medieval2TW Kingdoms, Empire TW, Napoleon TW, Peninsular campaign add on, Shogun2 TW (least favourite of all games listed)
I also play operation Vulcan (on a spectrum emulator) another very well implemented wargame from the 80's

All have their qualities and all highly enjoyable and had them all working apart from FOG. Recently installed De-fend /DOSBOX and my old FOG install works great ! Still got save games from 90's.

So got FOG running under De-fend / DosBOX on Windows Vista Business 64, intel i7 920, 6gb Ram, nVidia GF 260, all works without hiccup

Right off to kick Bonys ass at Wavre now
