HOW DO I GET PAST THE CODE FOR THE SIM! I type in anything i can think of and it doesnt work!
On this site (http://infocom.elsewhere.org/gallery/amfv/amfv.html) you'll find pictures of everything that was in the package, including the magazine article, the decoder wheel and (a picture of) the ballpoint pen!

looks gastly i think id rather play with my hands!
This game is off course not about looks, but about story and plot. If reading a book is not your cup of tea, interactive fiction/text-based gaming probably isn't either.

Well, I don't know about the others, but the game captured me from the beginning.
I first read all the story from the link that was presented on the previous post and it totally put me in the game's atmosfaire. Just like reading a very good book, but now you are totally inside the world.
But I have one little problem. I cannot stop the recording. I type record and it starts. With what command do I deactivate it? I tried: deactivate, stop, shut down... Well, I am sure that when you tell me I will feel silly for not thinking it, but please help me.
Thanks.
It's a great game.

OK!!!! I found the complete manual! You can download it from this address: http://www.the-underdogs.org/games/a/amfv/files/amfv-m.zip
And the command is RECORD OFF!!! And as I told you on the previous post, I feel very stupid for not finding the command by myself.
But the manual is very very useful, as it writes all the verbs that you can use.
Keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, memories.
I recall Infocom rated this game the toughest of all of the ones they had. So I was quite happy when I beat it without any help. That certainly didn't make me a good player as I only managed to win about 4 of the two dozen Infocom games by myself.
My opinion of this game was that the simulations to different times were very nice and made it fun to play through. But being a text-based game you have to be the sort of person with the patience to read through a good book if you're going to finish this. It's been a long (long!) time, but I seem to recall that a big trick is having that recorder on at the right times.

Could someone explain why I'm unable to post new topic? Is this a feature limited to moderator?
I can post new topics. Perhaps you're required to have a certain number of posts, first.

The game is absolutly perfect! It is extremely detailed. I managed to make almost a complete map with all the locations and did all the recording of my first mission. Except one. Watch a movie. Where is the cinema? I have searched the entire city again and again and I cannot find it. Can anyone help me?

Point taken. I think all topics in this particular forum have to be started by the admins and mods.

Just finished it, great game. If you still haven't found the cinema, it is on the north side (NE, NW, one of those) of Bodanski Blvd, east of River St.
The Infocom Gallery (http://infocom.elsewhere.org/gallery/amfv/amfv.html) has a bunch of good stuff, along with images of everything that came with the game (map, decoder, manual, etc). I purchased this years ago (never got around to playing this game through) in the Sci-Fi collection of Infocom games, but the map was shrunk and not very good image quality, so this helped a lot.

I really want to get into this game but it seems so beyond me. I was born in the year it came out and from what I've read it was one of the last, great, text-based game. I guess because I'm so not used to this type of gameplay I just get so lost in it.
oh well...

Hi
I have tried to log into this game and cant work out how to! I cant get passed the section asking if I want colour or not, I hit yes then nothing happens, I realise that there is a security thing that I need to enter, how do I get there? And how does this code wheel work? (in relation to the program, how do I interpret the data to enter it etc). In short, does any one have a simple explanation on how to get in?

Great game.
I am using DosBox, because I had some problem using winfrotz.
Some text is missing when there are long descriptions, but the text is back when I click on Scrollback button.
Anybody had the same problem with WinFrotz?
cheers

Can someone tell me if there's any way to edit the text in this game?
I'd enjoy translating it to Spanish

Don't know an editor, but it would be <strike>difficult</strike> laborious to translate the parser/interpreter.

I just love geography and making maps. So I remade the AMFV scanned Rockvil Map (http://infocom.elsewhere.org/gallery/amfv/amfv_map1b.jpg), transforming it into this unrecognisable monster:
http://pbmgfw.blu.livefilestore.com/y1plvHvbJw7EOI48FcvbdQoaOuAnUZa5hyFp8w6w5ZJgROKfoP q-EVHfbCDJynWJNUSnMachzEcX2pVhdZuIBkFXA/Rockvil%20AMFV%20Map%20Remake.png
But personally, I'd use the old one. It has a "Silent Hill"-ish feel to it, old, used and realistic. Mine is more like the Map in GTA.

Great old game. I like most of Infocom's. They can be incredibly, ridiculously expensive to find, sadly.
this is a nice game. some like to call it a science fiction novel, which is blunt exaggeration - it's more like a science fiction short story.
you travel around rockvil in different future times. there are many places to visit, bad not much going on: only brief descriptions of the surroundings, minimal and repeating interactions with other people, eg. all the waiters in the whole city act and say the exactly same thing and the groceries/bars are all alike. you are not able to talk to the people of rockvil, except for government/church officials.
the 2051 simulation is a bit boring, as it resembles 2041 very much. altough it has some suprises like when you visit your home.
In one place you can find a "rusty cross", you can take it and carry it along. does it have any other purpose?
the developers themselves compared the game to "brave new world" and "1984". this is somewhat misleading as "brave new world" is more of an utopian than dystopian vision and "1984" is concerned with totalitarian aspects of socialism while AMFV plays with apprehensions of liberal values and can maybe seen as a rather naive critique of the reagon/thatcher-years.
someting you should pay ATTENTION to when playing: in part II don't fill the record buffer with changes you notice until you reach 2071. because you need to have something recorded from the 2071 simulation or else perelman will not come to his office and you're stuck. it happened to me and i had to replay from the beginning of part II. luckily this was the only bug i run across.
4 points!

Brilliant story! I never played interactive fiction before - that is, I just tried Freddy Pharkas yesterday but I could never get the hang of these games, as I usually get killed without any progress. I have to admit that I didn't come far without hints, but after reading a few I loved wandering around in the future.
You shouldn't be too afraid to record things, though, every time the buffer is full you can return to the office, wait for Perelman to show up (during working hours!), then let him read and empty the buffer.
Yes, I know this is kicking an old thread ;)
