I have this game, and I recall to play it a lot. Besides the fun of having missions day or night, this game has a feature which I have no idea if it is usable nowadays!
The compatibility with later OS was never a problem for me, once I have old computers fit to run old programs/games.
So my question is about that speacial feature of SEIII that was allowing two players far from each other, at their homes, to play the game either as partners or as opponents...
It was a modem to modem connection, where one would need to click-dial the destination phone nr. and as soon as the connection was made, each player would use the already loaded game.
Ok, ok... the question is:
Is it possible nowadays with routers, etc, make or emulate the mentioned p2p connection in order to be able to use again that game feature?
The last, but not the least: far from having any expertise on this area of communications, I will be probably not the best learner if the language goes too specialized...
Thank you, anyway

Dosbox.
Read the section of the dosbox readme about IPX.

[Edit]
Also:

It's the same in dosbox 0.73

[Editē]
Also: Hamachi, never used it myself but it seems to simplify connecting compy things for beginners.

IPX networking in Dosbox, using an Hamachi network :rocks:

It's very good.
It's not hard to get set up, but it can be annoying if it doesn't work straight away...
The common problems include:

Firewalls, Routers, Port Forwarding and game settings.

They're not hard to fix, but may need a bit of trial and error to start determining what the problem is.

I'll be up for this, Dragom - I love these games. But I haven't got a joystick atm.

Well well, THANK YOU ALL for the help! I think I feel better just thinking I may be able to that, but it will have to wait... - I just couldn't resist to bring this topic up - otherwise it would keep me always doubting of such a possibility!

I will need to read that stuff first, to get an idea of what Hamachi does with XP network (words that by themselves tell me nothing, sorry - I am really very ignorant in that area (at least)... :)
Thanks again!!!

PS: Saccade, no rush but bear in mind we may one day (next year?), have to fight in our F-15s! :mischief: so... if I was you I would start a thread for everyone interested, so they can write to Santa asking for a joystick! :santa:

Can this thread be moved to multi-player now then, please?

Dear Santa,

This year I'd like:

A Banjo.
A Thrustmaster Pro joystick.
Assassin's Creed 2 for PS3 and Left 4 Dead 2 for PC.

When we get to the point that we want to play this (as it only usually takes us a short while to get it set up), I'll let people know.
I'm not sure how many ppl will be up for flight-sims, but there should be some!

It really is very easy, if it works no problems, Dragom.
I'll see if I can get it working on home network first.

Well, I am not sure if a one-to-one can be or is considered multiplayer...
But again, I am not the best person to judge such thing. You should know better, so, just go ahead, please!

Well, nobody knows if there is out there anyone eager of that game: but I would bet that many will like the idea of having a trip e.g. by night or just sunset light, only to see the other flying side by side and chat...
It must be awsome...
(I have the Janes F15, but it has no features like the old Microprose SEIII)
(and I wonder if there is, nowadays, anything that we could compare...)

Hey, your letter to Santa is touching! I will ask one of those Joysticks too!

That'd be well good!

We could do some formation flying, looping into a bombing run and dropping a load of explosives over a column of tanks...
All to the backdrop of the sun setting of the seas of Tripoli.

I'll play this with you and help you get it running, if you want, definitely.
Let me see if I can get a cheap joystick first, though. These games are well hard with the keys :D

There may be newer games that could be better...
What spec is your PC, Dragom?

I used to have IL-2 Sturmovik (http://il2-sturmovik.de.ubi.com/en/home.php) and used to play that online quite a bit.
It wasn't arcade as such - you had quite a few things to keep an eye on in any one sortie... Your plane as well as the others.
Landing wasn't too bad, though. Except when your plane was shot to bits :/
Pacific Fighters is the latest expansion - it's based around the world.

There's also a few jet sims out there, though I haven't played one since Falcon 3.0...
Except in Battlefield 2, but that's not a sim.

I could probably find a copy for us both, if you're interested in that?

I'll send you a PM about it.
