Oh, this game is like a hot tempered girl : she may have some annoying habits, but is so lovable!
The game is difficult: combat results, true to figurine-powered original, are quite random and unpredictable. One time your mortar will score direct hits on enemy formations, another time it will blow up in your face hurting your units - you get the picture now...
I wish the battlefield unit sprites had twice as high resolution, they're sometimes quite unclear. But otherwise the game is richly illustrated in original Warhammer sourcebooks' fashion and another factor that weaves the complex texture is ...sound. Grim, adrenaline pumping music is often sharply interrupted with wild cries of greenskins, dying horses and charging cavalrymen. If you can, turn up the volume!
BTW: Tomekk, I love your "orkish"-themed news entry!

Awwww, Up-and-down of Emotions :(
I bought this game some weeks ago, but got an critical error trying to install it.
Now i was like, aaaaw, party, Abandonia got some XP-compatible version, then i got the same error trying to install yours :-(
So itsobviously my ( laptops ) fault, any Ideas?
Error says something about a general protection error in a TMP modul.

The game wont run with dosbox. It says I need windows 95 when I try to open the game from my desktop.
Is there a win95 patch for Dosbox or something?

Addicted to Warhammer 40K I'm now.. but this game looks very cool too!
But, as we all know: Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment :bleh: .
Edit: Alas.. it doesn't run on my system.. errors all over da place :(

You need to use that workaroud for the old installer, I've got original CD and was stuck with the same problem.
And for the 100th time:
you won't ever run Win95-native game in dosbox! ! !

Perhaps we should add detailed instructions to the end of the review? Hopefully they'll read the review, right...? Right?
Memorandum: bat file made and uploaded as a zipped extra. Instructions added to end of review. Game uploader is penitent and has been absolved for his egregious sins, and might not be sent to a penal legion.

The installer workaround does work, but it also gives me the hint that some files are missing in the download!
The complete subfolder 'ENG' of the WARFB folder just is not there, and therefore the installer can't install properly with the gamepackage you provided.
It might work with the CD, but not everyone has it.

We've got someone working on the problem. After which it'll be anyone's guess what horrible alien creature will dig its way up out of the ice and eat him. And everyone will say, "It's just like being in a badly-written combat novel!"

No, you have to use Winbox.

That's exactly what I thought: probably would install, but it's mostly pointless. But with my open mind I was allowing you to surprise me with something new.
And better don't trick dosbox-n00bs next time, not all people are computer-savvy, esp. if they didn't live in the good old MS-DOS days. They're already confused enough :3:

I did have a bad ISO at first though, and had to re-download (not sure what the problem was with the first download, but one of the parts was not the right size).

There seem to be different CD version floating around, the one I have doesn't have an ENG folder (stated in the original batch) so the one included on site by Ace works pretty fine with the full version. One thing though, you may encounter that unpretty sound file not found error, for that, you need to expand the registry entry the installer makes. I include mine as attachment, you have to change the paths to your installation directory.

Hi guys
I've read this thread carefully several times but still seems to have trouble installing Warhammer SOTHR full version, despite all the helpfull comments.
I DL the full version via the link given in this thread, unpacked the files to warhammer sothr 1996 folder, amongst the unpacked files two image files are given - I've tried to mount both in Daemon tools on different occations and copy paste the content to the warhammer sothr 1996 folder, then I unpacked the whshr.bat given on this site (for the small version) and put it in the game dir and tried to install via bat. The installation begins as it should BUT then every time it says:
634 file(s) copied
File *.* was not found.
0 file(s) copied.
c:\DOS\CDrive\Warhammer SOTHR 1996\Warhammer SOTHR 1996\WARFB\*.*
The named file was not found.
0 file(s) copied.
1 file(s) copied.
Above is a translation from danish but should be quite accurate.
I know that the folder WARFB is in the the game dir folder - but for some reason the installation program can not find it!!
I hope somebody will be able to help cus I would really like to solve this problem and of course be able to play.
Thanks

Well you should use the whshr.bat included on the review site to install the game. if you mounted the image then you should enter the drive letter of the virtual Cd drive as source. If there are any problems, like your version has an ENG folder, and the installer throws a lot of file not found messages, then alternatively, you could use the batch file here (http://ntcompatible.com/Warhammer_-_Shadow_of_the_Horned_Rat_c11684.html).
If you can get the game to run, and you encounter virtual path not found errors when the battlefield is loading, you should download the registry entry I attached to my post. Then open it with a file editor (notepad for example) and change the path settings to the path you installed your WHSRS to. After that import the registry entry by double clicking on it. This should overwrite the previous one, and theoretically make the virtual path errors go away. I included the file because it has more entries then the registry that the custom installer creates, and it solved the problems in my case :)

First of all thanks Hunvagy for the quick respons.
But a weird thing happened when I altered the reg file. Next time I entered the game, firstly I noticed when I wanted to start a new campaign no name was suggested (ref. cmdr. Bernhardt). Secondly, when I entered the inventory (the book) all sorts of things were in there and not just the standard sword and potion. Finally, I entered the book where the men are listed and the screen whent black!
But nonetheless I reinstalled the game and used your technique on the allready existing reg file and now the sounds seems to work during battle - excellent
For those that might be interested, here is how I made the game work on my PC with help from hunvagy, the fifth horseman and all the commentaries in this thread..
1) DL full version via link in this thread.
2) Unzip all at the same time to the, by winrar, suggested folder.
3) Mount image with Daemon Tools (or similar program) and select open folder (NOT run warstart.exe).
4) Drag content of image/folder back to folder on pc.
5) Follow this link: http://www.abandonia.com/vbullet/showthread.php?t=20976 and do as brilliantly suggested by The Fifth Horseman. Afterwards (if not allready there) drag the whshr.bat file into the game dir.
6) Double click bat file and install (using the guidelines suggested on the main page http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/26140/Warhammer+-+Shadow+of+the+Horned+Rat.html).
7) To make sure the sound works during battle sequence open the whshr.reg file in notepad, which is located where you choose to install the game. In notepad make sure the paths (@) leads to where your actual installation is located on your pc. Afterwards doubleclick the reg file and accept.
Hope somebody will benefit from my experience and if something is unclear in my explanation please comment.

There isn't any ENG folder so Fifth's batch code won't run properly. You can either modify the code yourself, or simply download the batch file that has already been properly configured on the game's page.

I must say I haven't had any problems with the subs\ text etc.. But in the full version I DL from the link given in this thread there IS an ENG folder - if I double click the warfb folder there it is.
Furthermore I started of using the bat file available on this site but could not install the game properly untill I used the modification code given by the fifth horseman.
So Linbaba I suggest that you open your warfb folder in your game dir and see if the ENG folder is there and if not then according to Hunvagy it seems like you can just DL the small version of the game on this site and use that ENG folder instead which in theory should solve the problem.
I hope it will work for you.

*edit*
Well I'm totally lost on this one, I tried to just use the original non-full version with the standard batch, and its missing the text too.
In my full version install (using fith's batch file) I don't have an ENG folder or a warfb folder in the game directory but I do in the image (if that is what you mean)...
Each time I install, the .exe already has the 256 colour selected, is there some mistake I have made previously that is staying with me like some kind of registry problem or something?

I thought hun said there wasn't any ENG folder!! Anyways, if you have an ENG folder use Fifth's batch code, if not then use the batch on-site, since all I did was remove the ENG lines and directed it towards the proper directory where the files are located.
red makak

As far as I understand Hunvagy said his version had no ENG folder and in that case you could use the small version ENG folder instead - but your suggestion (Acethor) sound good as well. But nonetheless the full version I DL via this thread had a ENG folder - when one opens the image via Daemon tools (or similar program).
I wouldn't worry to much about the preset 256 color if I was you Linbaba.
Instaed drag and drop the content from the image to the game dir. When you have done that the the game dir should contain a warfb folder and in that an eng folder - thats what I did and it worked together with the fifth horseman bat code.
If there is still trouble it might be the order of which you did the unzip, drag/drop, bat install etc. and in that case (as I had to do several times before the game finally worked) I would delete all warhammer related files, but the DL rar files and start over and make sure I do it in the correct order as explained previously (but of course what works for me doesn't necesseraly work for you).
I really hope you find a way to make it work Linbaba - I know how much I struggled before it finally worked.
Regards Red Makek
I still fondly remember this game... I played it when it first came out and enjoyed it very much. I remember how my sister used to be annoyed with my crosbowmen captains screaming 'Fire!' every time before they shoot :D
As someone said here, it was very hard game, becauce Games Workshop Warhammer rules were implemented completely so (like in the table top one) a bad role of dice (virtual in this case) could make a difference between winning and losing. You could've played the same mission twince, use completely the same strategy and lose one time and win the other. Or score an overwhelming victory once and barely win with heavy losses the other time. That was another thing that made the game hard - since it was one continual campaign, suffering heavy losses in one mission could mean that you wouldn't have enough forces left to win the next one. Especially since you weren't able to replenish losses after every mission, but only certain ones.
I have to brag here that I managed to finish the game without cheating, thought only once. It still involved a lot of reloading of saved games and replaying certain missions until the best result was achieved (and sometimes even going back two missions), but I didn't use the hex editor. I was a bit disappointed with the way it ended (storywise) but it was a still great game to play.
Tips: The strongest unit in your army is your amber wizard. His Amber Spear spell is great for killing enemy characters (shamans, seers) and monsters (trolls, rat ogres) while his Flock of Doom deals with large blocks of enemy units. Before starting the battle (after positioning your units) don't press the start button until Wind of Magic scale is up to the maximum then quickly inflict as much damage as you can with your wizard. Note that he doesn't have the Flock of Doom spell at the beginning, so keep replaying the mission when he's about to get his level until he gets that spell ;) And make sure you protect him from the close combat.
Your next stronges unit is your Grudghbringer Cavalry, especially after you pick up some useful magic items with it. They are very effective when they charge and even more if they hit an already engaged enemy unit in flank or rear.
When using your war machines (mortars or later cannons), make sure that you fire with them only as much as you need. In other words, once you see that you are winning the mission just stop firing. That way you'll eliminate the risk of misfiring at that stage. Trust me, there's nothing more frustrating than crushing enemy and then loosing a mortar to a misfire when trying to destroy a few skaven that were already running away.
Finally, you'll notice that all the missions are scripted in the way that the enemy's starting possitions are always the same in a mission and their reinforces/ambushes always come from the same spot. Use that to your advantage when replaying a failed mission, to assure that possitions of your troops counter those of enemy's. You can even use your mortars to shoot at a spot where you know an enemy unit is, even if you don't see the enemy.
Panthro

I could not get used to the artillery. Just didn't seem to hit the vast majority of the time, and I got a lot of misfires.
I did however find the hex editing very useful... but then I am usually terrible for cheating after becoming frustrated.

Finally, I thought everything was working fine and I was happily slashing my way through orcs and skavens it happened "whshr.exe not running"!!
It was on my final march to Zhufbar after I had just helped out a farmer with some gobling problems.
Has anyone else had the same problem and what did you do??
I'm playing the full version by the way.
So far I tried to restart a couple of times, install the small version and copy/paste the save games, but that doesn't even run and finally I tried to install the full version again and copy/paste the save games - which made it possible to run the save games, but still the same "whshr.exe not running" when I'm doing the final march.
Can anyone help!?
And finally do anyone know if there is the same or similar problem with the small version (if not I might consider starting over with that version).

Run the game in Windows XP Mode. (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx)

If you're not afraid of doing some work:
Get Windows Virtual PC 7 and install Win98(SE) in it, works also.

Why don't you simply try it?
You can't do much harm in VPC isn't it?
I usually advise VPC-W98SE as it has more chance that the game will smoothly with that combination, VPC-XP is much more demanding from your host, how it will run on your PC depends of the hardware .....
Maybe a needless remark; don't forget to install the VMadditions on the guest OS.

Well, it seems I'll have to. I'm just lazy. I thought that maybe someone tried it already. The VMadditions are installed, of course. I just don't understand how to use the virtual machine without them. I have multiple virtual machines installed. All are with Windows XP. My motherboard doesn't support older OSs than XP, so I never even tried '98. I didn't use them for more than a year now. I installed them last year to pose as multiple players in one browser mass multi-player online strategy game. No one even guessed that they all were the same person. I had even multiple Skype accounts for that purpose. Even sneaked one of them into the enemy alliance. :hihihi: That was a lot of fun. But I was bored in the end and no longer play that game now.

click -> http://a.imagehost.org/t/0355/shrt.jpg (http://a.imagehost.org/view/0355/shrt)
Also tried in VPC-W98SE, won't work, lots of missing files, error messages, whatever and whatnots. Seems a lot of files from the installer are missing to run the AB version in W98, the game should work in W98 as it's a W95 game.
Maybe I'll try again with the CD one day, if *IF* I can find the CD in that collection of mine ....

I've tried the normal version and it works - but sometime in the past I had the CD and it just doesn't feel the same without the movies and speech during battles - that Rat guy's war cry was brilliant when I was a lad "Die, Die"

I had exactly the same issue while using Google Chrome. And also with Firefox a bit earlier on my older system. When I tried it with Internet Explorer 8, all worked fine.
In case if someone wondering if I managed to make SotHR work on my PC, I haven't tried it yet. Just don't have time for it right now. I have too many things to do. I have Windows 7 now, so there's a Windows XP mode as an additional option now for me. I'll try it sooner or later.

Ok, may be a stupid question but I still get the 'need to run the game at 256 colors' message even when I right click the .exe and change the properties. Anybody else had this problem and/or know how to get around it? On Vista by the way.

Maybe your hardware/drivers can't lower to 256 colors? (My newest ones can't ...)
Then the easiest solution is to run the game in VPC2007.
Thanks, that link worked, and I've been (slowly with much reloading!) playing my way through the game and reliving some of my younger days until...
I tried to get into Zhufbar, after the 'Squatter's Rights' mission. The first part of the cut-scene plays "From a vantage point above the Pass" or whatever, and then the screen goes blank? No error messages, the game simply freezes?
I think others mentioned having the same (or similar?) problem getting to Zhufbar and I'll have a look to see if they got a fix. What I may try is loading the game in the standard download version (no cut-scenes) and see if this helps so,
keep you posted
I've tried various different things to no avail - the iso version of the game seems to get stuck at zhufbar no matter what.I'm gonna try playing the game right through in the normal download and see if its simply a buggy iso. Moving my savegames between the full iso and the normal DL doesn't work - it doesn't like them for some reason and gives the windows error box.
I even tried a different route (for those of you that know the game at all) taking the road to Zhufbar at the first opportunity, I think just after rescuing Carlson family? Ok you miss out a fair bit of XP, don't get Ragnar's Wolves or the Obsidian Talisman... but you do get Vanheim's 75th - the best unit in the game by far! Only problem is once you've done the Slave Assault mission and the Rat Trap another seemingly broken cutscene hangs the game again.

Are you by chance playing the game in Vista or Windows 7? I don't seem to have any problems with it in Windows XP once the 256 colors and 640x480 compatibility options are enabled.

I actually finished the game using that route (ages ago). I didn't find missing out on experience too important, as long as my amber wizard was getting enough to learn flock of death. I did play the full game version (still have the disk somewhere).
The only bug I've found was that after a few missions in Zhufbar my captain of the crossbowmen unit would disappear - he'll get 0's for all his stats. After that at the beginning of every mission I would start with full unit of crossbowmen (at deployment phase), but as soon as I would start the mission/battle, one of them would just die. I had to stop deploying them until I was able to recruit reniforcments. Annoying, but not as much as the game crashing.
I'm using windows XP. So far I haven't found a way around it. I haven't had a chance to play through the normal DL version yet and I keep getting the error messages at the start of battles when I do no matter what I try.
My brother had the original game cd and I remember bugs like your crossbow's captain and stats going funny from time to time. I think it sometimes happened when a units xp went beyond elite and could reset to the basic 'one skull'.
If only I knew where that cd went to and I might not have to mess around... ah well!

I remember that bug happening sometimes whenever I played the game, too. It's easy to fix though, you have to edit the stats of the unit in question, which are located in one of the savegame.x (x for the number of the file you saved) files. The file is in text format so it's easy to figure out, you just have to edit the particular unit in every location (it's more than one) in the file, not only one time, or the game will crash when loading that savegame.
Of course, nothing stops you from changing the stats of the unit whichever way you like...

I'd like to say that I actually got it working without using Virtual PC on Windows Vista. It turns out that my problem was I was running Fifth Horseman's batch file without administrator privileges. Ordinarily, this wouldn't cause a problem, only that somewhere in his batch file was a command to copy some files into the Windows\System32 directory, and if you don't "run as administrator" then you get denied this, I actually didn't see the error on this, as I assumed it ran fine.
I got those last files copied, and it works just fine!

If it's such a good idea to run those old games directly in a newer OS, that's another question.
After all, you run a W9X game on Vista, and W9X games are notorious system polluting softs.

Hi,
Acctually, i do also have this problem. Very annoying. I just cant get it working right. I've won a few battles already but it just isn't the same.
Does somebody know how to fix this? I'm working on a vista with 256 color preferences, i am also downloading the full ISO, but it's taking a while. I've found multiple images of the game but they all give errors.

Hi there just came accross thread have been trying for ages to get this working. I afraid i am not the best with computers. I have gotten to the point where when loading the first mission i get errors becuase it cant find certain files SOunds etc. im guessing this post below fixes this. However when i try to do it it just seems to break other things!
If someone has the time please to explain for me what exactly i need the registry file to say that would be great. i have simply installed the game into c:\rats
What it said before i broke it was
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mindscape]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mindscape\WarHammerFB]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mindscape\WarHammerFB\ LocalDir]
@="c:\\rats "
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mindscape\WarHammerFB\ RemoteDir]
@="c:\\rats "
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mindscape\WarHammerFB\ SaveDir]
@="SAVE"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mindscape\WarHammerFB\ UpdateDir]
@=""
There seem to be different CD version floating around, the one I have doesn't have an ENG folder (stated in the original batch) so the one included on site by Ace works pretty fine with the full version. One thing though, you may encounter that unpretty sound file not found error, for that, you need to expand the registry entry the installer makes. I include mine as attachment, you have to change the paths to your installation directory.
Luchsen

Replace c:\\rats by c:\\rats\\ (no space at the end!).
Replace SAVE by c:\\rats\\SAVE\\.
If there is a SOTHR subdirectory, you have to add SOTHR\\ to both.
You didn't post the whole REG file, did you? The other entries don't have to be changed, I just ask in case you missed the other entries miraculously.
This is missing and to change:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mindscape\WarHammerFB\ InstallDir]
@="D:\\SHARE\\SOTHR"
Now, please explain in detail what you have done till now.

Since the solution with the registry isn't from me, I can't say much. Did you follow the installation instructions meticulously? (You did use our game archive, didn't you?):
IMPORTANT!!! READ THIS!!!!!
#1. Download the game.
#2. Download 'Batch' (available as an extra at the top of the page)
#3. Unpack the game and 'Batch' extra, and move the whshr.bat file into the game directory.
#4. Run the whshr.bat file (DO NOT RUN WARSTART.EXE OR SETUP.EXE)
#5. First path - Enter in where you want the game to be installed. Example: c:\warhammer
#6. Second path - Enter in EXACT LOCATION of the installation files that you just unzipped. Example: c:\downloadedgames\warhammerSOTHR
#7. Installation should be complete. Go to wherever you just installed it, and set the WHSHR.EXE file to Run in 256 Color Mode.
#8. Run the game. If it ever complains about needing music or sound files right after the map screen just click OK to skip past them and you should be fine.

I have been trying for over 10 years to play this game again and never got this far! so annoyed im so close but cant play it.
I tried playing the game without being about to see the battlefield and it seems to be working fine played first 2 missions.
cant think of anything else that might be the reason why its not working

There's a bug affecting new user profiles.I noticed that as well. It seems if I enter the forums via the discuss link on the game page, I'm not logged in to the forum, but if I use the forum tab on the top of the page, and then go back, click the forum link on the game dl page, and then reload the page, I'm recognized.
Personally, that installer did not work for me. It copied most of the files, but not the sound/music files. I had to copy those myself. And use the registry entry after changing it to my game's path. But now it works for me, on XP in 95 compatibility :)
Make sure it's set to full, not half pixel. Man it looks awful on half, lol.
Edit, a day later:
I think the problem with this game is less the rip and more just poor game design. I downloaded the full cd. It still has issues with just not loading things. I save the game after a mission and it saves my units as they were at the end of battle, without applying the reinforcements. This is like some V0.7 shareware. I get why I had never heard of this Warhammer game. It's clearly not a finished product.

I am willing to pay upto $60US for a PAL version of the Playstation release of this game. I have searched everywhere! My laptop will not run this installation as I can not find a DOS emulator download that actually downloads properly anywhere either. Plus being a child of the 80's,I grew up with win 95. The concept and actuall implementation of emulators is a little beyond my limited computer savvy :'( . I do need a functional emulator to run afew old school dos games aswell but for now the PS version of this game would keep me well entertained.

I own the PS version and it's not that great. The use of the controller compared to the mouse makes it very awkward, but I'll sell it to you if you want.
Can anyone help me with the installation of this game? I have both the PC version and the downloaded version but I was not able to install it using the batch file, I had the problem Red Malak had. Dark Omen is amazing, I seriously love that game - the graphics, the characters, cutscenes, generally mood are great. The best bit has to be the battle in the Great Forest when the goblins attack and the flagellant guy says: "They're all around ussssssssss!"
However....................
Shadow of the Horned Rat has some cool elements which beat Dark Omen. It is less linear, you can choose your missions (you rarely get to do this in DO), and you have to make decisions about which units to recruit. There are more units to choose from, but you can't have them all, as they cost money in upkeep. But you can have a lot of units on your roster if you want to, meaning you have much more control over your army than in DO.
Some of the SOTHR missions are great too - the one where you have to dash to safety in the Dwarf fort, fighting a rearguard action along the way, sticks out in my memory.
the big problem with SOTHR is the controls. It's difficult and clunky. The graphics aren't very good either.
Love both games! They just don't make strategy games like these any more, it's such a shame

Hello Gamers! I was thrilled to relive my history by playing this delightful game, only to be disheartened. When I reach the cutscene showing the zhufbar siege from the overland route, my game seizes up, and i have been unable to advance past this point. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Copying files at random like that will not help.

Scroll down to the bottom for the WinG installer. Download, unpack, install and it should work - keep in mind that this API dates back to 16-bit Windows, and may not work properly (or at all) on 64-bit Windows.

Just before the final march to Zhufbar, save the game and close it. Then go into the game folders and move the "ANIM" folder out of the "BINARY" section, preferably out the directory entirely. Then do the march mission. Once you've done that, you can re-add the "ANIM" folder if you want the cut scenes back.
