I recently dowbloaded a RAR file that for some stupid reason is password protected (stupid, as the person I got it from said nothing and is unavailable for a few months).

I was wondering if there is any way around the copy protection... o_O

try random passwords.
password are usually one way traffic. you encrypt the data using it and the password is lost. (or better be lost else it's a worthless system)

you can brute force attack it, i suspect using a dictionary attack wont work because they wont have used a real word.. but a character attack would do it eventually

theres one tool but i didnt use it, or any others.. but its worth a try

Yeah I had a rar file like that once... I believe it was Freddy Pharkas... That was a while ago.

I tried using a brute force thing on it. I didn't get it tho. Basically the faster your computer, the faster it will take to crack it depending on how many characters.

Also when you open up the RAR file in WinRAR, check the properties or something. It might have it written in there for you. I have a file like that. I don't know why they bothered with a password when they just gave it to you

here's another link to some more RAR crackers, i've never used these before and so please use at your own risk. Some of these are freeware others are shareware.

if it has a url or something in it try that as the password (thats a common way to protect the archieve from thief-sites, but only complete idiots thinks that that will stop sombody from stealing and repacking it).

if you cant guess the password... You'll have to bruteforce it...

Did a brute @ a Zip-archive.. went realy fast.. used a 2.4 GHz P4

It was a Trial-version of the program, so it could only do letters.. but fortunally, it was enough...

Thanks for the tips, though none of them seemed to work.
There were no comments in the RAR file, and the crackers you guys mentioned are only sharaware, restricting me to 3 letter passwords.

http://dnsoft.swrus.com/

that one is supposed to be shareware, but not disabled while you evaluate it.
