Great, Bethesda has actually provided the full CD version, with Arena they just provided the floppy version so no sounds + cutscenes. :lust:
I can now finally play this game again after my CD got scratched years ago.

I've played this game many times - even got the original box copy at home which is not cheap these days so I can provide scans as well.

much cooler than pansy money milking lucas arts with their digg, which is a lame game anyways
I think they're wrong in recommending a huge installation, it just duplicates all files and doubles the used disc space. Since the CD is actually mounted from the real HD, a minimum installation won't run any slower AFAIK. The game can't be played without CD anyway even if you made a huge installation.
When applying the .213 patch, if you chose the minimum installation, the patch installs a 22 MB file from the (virtual) CD into the (virtual) HD, because it assumes that it wouldn't be able to patch a file in a CD-ROM. I don't think there's any problem in moving it back into the CD, but I haven't tested the result thoroughly.

i tried the download and foll9owed the instruction for installation and playing exactly and it still says I have the wrong cd.
Did you append the "-label Daggerfall" parameter to your mount command for the CD?

Don't start the game with dagger.exe, start it with fall.exe z.cfg (completely like written). Then it should work.

I know some people who would disagree, but I still think Daggerfall is the best (And buggiest) Elder Scrolls game.
I already bought it on Ebay, in a box with everything included, which I still hold up as my favourite purchase on Ebay, but I know some friends of mine who will be pleased with the news that it is free.
Trust Bethesda to release Daggerfall for free directly after I payed a load of money for it on Ebay. Gits.

With all the recent buzz around here about Daggerfall, I decided to install my old copy and give it a go again for the first time since I bought it in '96. I applied the latest patch (2.13) or something like that.
Anyway, I was wondering how you buy items in this game. Everytime I make it to a store, regardless of what they deal in, I only get "Talk" or "Sell" option, never "BUY". Do I need a certain reputation or something? As a result I am hoarding crazy amounts of gold from all of my sales, but only equipped with what I've managed to scavenge off of dead bodies.
Any insights?

You must click the shelfs to browse wares. Mind you that each shelf has different wares, so If you want to look through whole store, you gotta check them all.

I realise most people will know about this website already, but whenever I have a question about an Elder Scrolls game, I just look it up on The Unoffical Elder Scrolls pages (http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Daggerfall).
I hope this free release will boost interest in Daggerfall, and stop people on Youtube from hunting down Daggerfall gameplay videos and complaining that it 'isnt aS goOd as obliveon teh graFics sux'.

Did you lock the mouse pointer? Daggerfall needs a manual mouselock with the ctrl+F10 command sometimes.

*Waves a 'Bethesda rules' flag around* Yaay, finally!
Now I should find that DVD I put the extra quests on...
By the way, one question bothered my for quite a while. In Daggerfall, can you travel from town to town without the Fast Travel? Or does it generate some random scenery forever for you to run around when you leave town? I remember trodding for hours and not getting to the next town.

Yes you can walk on foot but it's quite tedious as you can imagine. The scale is a LOT larger than that of Oblivion.

As interesting as it sounds, Daggerfall is one of those games whose atmosphere relies on the sharp blocky textures. The moment you "smooth" them out, the world looks bland and simplistic so either textures need to be redone or the blurring needs to be turned off.

Not a problem for me, as long as there is something to see :) I did walk around in both Morrowind and Oblivion for the scenery. And I remember doing that in Arena, only to find out that I've been running past the same farmland for hours :D

Well I base my assumptions on what he did with Dark Forces in DarkXL. I played through the first level with the last build, and it was just like the old Dark Forces, only natively running in windows. Ok, the freelook distorted the enemy sprites, but there's no way around that, I think. At least he didn't try to replace them with some horrible 3D models, alá Doomsday Engine :) I checked out the video at the DaggerXL site and it didn't look that bad. And I think he mentioned in the thread somewhere, that you can turn smoothing off. The real reason I'm looking forward to this is the fact, that even in the latest DOSBox, Daggerfall crashes on me quite often, and screws up the savegames. And finding out the next day, that your save you made after several hours of gaming is corrupted, is :wall:

AFAIK, you cannot walk from one point of interest (be it a town or a cave or a castle) to another. Each time you enter a town, the landscape is randomly generated, so you can walk around for hours and still find nothing. :whistling:

I distinctly remember walking to a town - it's not because the landscape is random that the towns don't appear where they're supposed to.

It was posted somewhere on the official forums. Towns are specific cells, that appear only on the maps and are impossible to reach because they simply do not exist in the randomly pregenerated world. I will try to dig up the post but it was sometime ago and there are helluva lot threads there. :)

That's very odd because I'm nearly certain I did do it. Unless the community patch is the reason.

Well I cannot dig it up on the forums so I did a search thru Google and a post from these very forums popped up: :)
Unlike Arena (the first elderscrolls game) there is nothing outside the city walls.
Which is kind of strange I think, but its true.
Once outside a city its all just a huge plane with a texture and 'craters' in it.
Outside of dungeons these planes will have some vegetation on it.
So you can't walk from one city to another... You can buy a horse but you can only use it inside cities. As a lot of cities are huge this can come in quite handy.
Like quests and cities the dungeons, too, are generated. That is to say all dungeons that aren't related to the mainquest.
And that is pretty much what I said. And I am pretty sure someone else explained this on the official forums too.
PS: To add to the above quoted statement, you can use your horse with fast travel, which will take less time if you use your steed.
:)

Daggerfall's gameworld (the areas you walk through, not necessarily the lore and all that) is much, MUCH larger (the map is so large that it can take upwards of 45 minutes even to make it across short distances between locations if you decide to actually walk rather then use fast travel [...] the wilderness ranges from mostly flat terrain with litte bumps to fairly jagged terrain with big spikes [...]
I guess that settles it :)
(Taken from the Tips from the pros.pdf)
Shame, I wanted to have a little walk in the kingdom of Daggerfall.

I take back my statement, it actually IS possible to travel from one exterior location to another, sorry. I mistaked it for Arena, where the world is randomly generated each time you exit objects, so walking from one point to another would be impossible and would take you... forever. :3:
However, the walking in Daggerfall seems to be a tedious and long task. :)

Well, the idea behind the question was if it is possible, and worth it. It is possible, but hardly seems worth it, sadly. In Arena it was quite fun, although I passed the same farm several times in an hour, but back then it was teh sh*t. In Morrowind and Oblivion, I had a lot of fun visiting the whole locale, I even posed with the character at scenic locations, and made loads of screenshots :D Still, I am very happy that Daggerfall is free now, so I can reemerge into this fine piece of game (however bugridden it may be)
In Arena you can travel the countryside finding entrances to dungeons (you can ask passers by where's the nearest one, best honest way to make cash, and experience), and return to the town you came out from, but you won't arrive at any other town no matter how long you walk--according to the manual.
Now it gives me a 203 error after I saved and play again. Please help
If you're running it in DOSBox there aren't many variables, it should work, changing the emulated memory from the default 16 to 32 MB, according to the instructions. It works for most people with dagger.exe. Are you using a frontend? Try 0.73, that's what I'm using. Also try re-downloading, it's not common but you could perfectly have a corrupt file.

I tried Dosbox 0.73 and I downloaded the game so many times. i followed the instructions exactly and no avail. In 0.73 it starts to work ok but if I close dosbox after i Quit the game and I start it up later it causes me that error. I guess its too buggy for my system. Too bad. If that guy on the forum finishes that other emulator then I'll download it again. Life is too short for extremely buggy games.

Did you install it in c:\dagger? Did you set the memory in dosbox.conf to 32?
I myself use 64, because of Battlespire, but 32 should be the minimum for Daggerfall. Also you could try strating it with "fall z.cfg" instead of the dagger.exe

Well I attached my .conf file, maybe it helps. You should of course change the mount directories accordingly. Anyway, I don't really wanna derail this thread, troubleshooting should go into the troubleshooting section
