View Full Version : Unix conversions

Anyone got any experience in converting the console commands to either MSDOS, Win32 or MacOS?

For some reason (maybe it's the game's engines) they're not exporting them as documents readable in any other format.
I don't really fancy doing as I did with Deep Space Drifter and converting them all manually. (ie, writing the whole fecking thing out again - I may as well write the whole game again, verbatim, in another format...)

I've got several archives that require changing into either text documents, which means a lot of cleaning up or not having them on site.

If no-one can help, then I hope no-one minds if the Unix stuff doesn't come until later or, perhaps, depending on my workload, not coming at all.

Like a Unix techie.

I haven't met many with exciting love lives beyond ASCII porn...

Would you care to explain your problem a bit more detailed?

Okay... If I understand it right, you are trying to switch the command structure of your UNIX machine into a standard MSDos structure?

This have nothing to do with running games. Moving to Technical.

Okay...

I have a few files that are Unix scripts.
They are "Interactive" Hint-books for a few games..
Some of the files, upon opening in Terminal, just list this:

line 1: Questions: command not found.
line 2: Hints: command not found.
line 3: Spoilers: command not found.
etc...

I can read the files and the text contained within, but cannot get the damn things to run as they are supposed to.
ie - Select question, directs you to the hint, which directs you to another hint, which directs you to spoiler.

I'm just being lazy - to reiterate, I can't be arsed to copy out the text again, as I did with Deep Space Drifter's interactive hint-book.

I'm not a SCO buff. I cannot see why these scripts aren't functioning correctly.

All I'd like to be able to do is to be able to copy the readable text out of the scripts and into a universal document format, so that I may reproduce said Unix scripts as pages of text WITHOUT having to manually copy out each and every character that is written.

Because it's not working when I tell it to export the contents of said files into simple, basic words and symbols.

I'm leafing through one of the "For Dummies" books I've had for years to see if I can find the answer.

I'm regretting even asking the question, as I'm not really sure it even matters.
Just my little world and the minutae that inhabit it and make it tick.

will you please upload one of the hint books?

Now, that would be nice.
I'm thinking that Apex should be capable of doing something with that kind of files..... 'maybe'.

Maybe ..... depends, you know ....

I uploaded one when I submitted my review of "The Abbey of Montglane".

You'll find it on FTP in the correct subfolder.

If I remember right, it's called HINT or something equally obvious.

Nice one guys.

I'm not that stupid, Paco!

Jesus...
I wanted it to actually BE an Interactive Hint-book - not just a regular document.

A Universal Document Format document. So the script is kept and it's like a menu interface.

I think they're way better than Walkthus. If I could translate, or even know how to build, an Interactive Hint-Book then that would be awesome because Walkthru's totally spoil a game. Especially if it's just the one puzzle, not too late on in the game, that gives you the methodology to expect in the harder puzzles.
I always just go back to the Walkthru and use it if I get stuck for 5 minutes - making it so I'm just watching the game, rather than playing it. You know?

A Hint-book like that for any game would be great!
It requires a bit more writing and some creativity to make one that's not interactive.

That, I can do.

It requires computer programming knowledge (and I know outdated coding. I did an MCSE primarily on NT4, ffs...) of which I have none.

So if someone else if willing to help me with this project, I think it'd be a good thing to have people request for popular games - it'd make the site better and people like me (whomever they are) who prefer not to have games spoiled would enjoy things more.

Enjoying life's a good thing.

I can almost do it on MacOS using Textmate - at least that attempts to run the script, even if it doesn't work right.

I just have no idea whatsoever about how the hell to get even that far in MSDos...
Totally clueless, dude.

I just don't know how to do it.

Someone else out here does, probably. If they'd collaborate with me, since I'm willing to give up the time and effort, I reckon it'd be something that is pretty unique on a site like this (or anywhere).

Feck off having to buy massive £29.99 books at the shop to find the out how to get the last flag at the Ruined Temple in Assassin's Creed - of which No. 2 looks awesome! - or spoiling Simon the Scorcerer, which I did when I called up the people and badgered them to tell me how to do it all the time.
That sucks.

What'd be better, is if I approached some games companys and, after playing a game or Play Testing, do this with someone.

I'd rather play games all day and write about them than have to keep spewing out convoluted plot lines and weak characters that hold no interest once I know them backwards.

Because there are always new games to play! :D

Frakka Frakka Frakka

If your really ambitous you could jsut make a program yourself, rather then wasteing your time making these. Like you could make a simple HTML doc or something, not sure how you'd actually incorporate that into a game, but heh :D

Thanks for the tip Fubb.

But it is usually better to approach people with a working (or at least semi-working) proposal, unless it's totally air-tight.

I hadn't even considered it as a web-page...

Ambition engines to full - I'm gonna go to Guildford and have a chat with the EA guys there and see if I can change jobs.
If anyone wants to come with me or collaborate, let me know, eh?
