Although the game itself was very playable I disliked it due to my inept playing skills :(
Guess its ok then. :/

I am glad you guys seem to like the game. If you have questions, do not hesitate to ask. It is one of my favourite games, ever.
(Look out for the first game in the series to appear on the site, soon.)
Hey man, the game looks good from the review, I can't wait to try it out.
Thanks!

ehm
this is odd
I can't seem to figure out how to install it
Tom Henrik
06-05-2004, 08:36 AM
You do not have to install it. Just extract the files to a directory of your choice, and run it in DosBox. :)
Stroggy
06-05-2004, 09:27 AM
okay
now this is odd
i've been using dosbox for some time now and i've never had any problems
but now the game is giving me quite cryptic message
"someone has destroyed the magic values for this block! system's integrity endangered!"
at first I assumed it was some kind of old copy protection
but nothing works
damn I feel so stupid now
Tom Henrik
06-05-2004, 09:50 AM
Ok, THAT beats me. I haven't used DosBox for long, so I can't help you with that program. As for the message you typed. I have never even seen it before. Did the game work at all for you? Were you able to see the intro or did you just get a blank screen?
(Goes away to download the game from this site, and try it out for my self. Maybe I'll get some more ideas about what could be the problem).

Best thing to do is head over to the DOSBox forums and see what that means. Be sure to check if the game will run at all under DOSBox, if not they might get angry.

The only problems I have found can be considered small....
1. It takes some time for the game to load a video sequence. First time this happened I thought the game had locked up, because this does not happen in the original.
2. Some videos start and end in white and black.
3. The frame around the videos shows up and then disappears.
4. Animation can sometimes be slow.
But none of these flaws causes the game to halt.
Both sound and music works fine.
The only MAJOR problem I have discovered on the downloadable version is the inability to save the game! :? (BIG PROBLEM!!)
Is there a key you could press to make the DosBox save the game? (For instance the Nintendo Emulator uses the F5 key).
Stroggy
06-05-2004, 10:29 AM
well its obviously something from the game itself (its talking about magic and stuff) and its in red letters
Tom Henrik
06-05-2004, 10:40 AM
What did you do right before the game came to a stop?
LotharGR
06-05-2004, 11:02 AM
Well.. on the first screen ( still in the temple ) i pressed the icon with the diskette and then i pressed the icon with the disk labed "S" and with the characters upon it... i assumed that this was the way to save the game.. but when i pressed it, it asked me a word from the manual... so this is the copy protection.
Tom Henrik
06-05-2004, 11:20 AM
Exactly. This question is not supposed to appear! Since I do not have the english manual, I have no idea what the words the copy protection wants. (You get three tries, and then the game quits).
Luckily this is not the case with game number 1. No copy-protection.
That is why I was wondering if there was a key you could press to let the DosBox save the game instead.
Tom Henrik

The manual to the game is now available in the game section (below the map)!
It details minimum requirements for characters, magic in the game, hints and so forth. Check it out!

Hope I am putting this in the right spot. I wanted it in the Star Trail section, but am not really familar with forums so I am sorry if I am doing something stupid - not the first time.
Anyway, I thank you for putting this download on the site and was looking forward to trying it. I tried it using Dosbox and starting the game using the Star.exe file and got the same message as someone else indicated - " Star Trail Guru Meditation Someone has destroyed the magic values for this block! system's integrity endangered" Weird!
I then tried installing it from a regular Dos command prompt within Windows XP and it asked whether disk 1 was in drive A or B. Since the file is all on drive C I couldn't choose either and it wouldn't install. I then tried starting the game with star.exe in the regular Dos command prompt and got the Star Trail Guru Meditation message.
Anyone figure this out?

welcome to the forum

and with the exams approaching I'm not thinking clearly
i'm sure there is a perfectly logical answer to this.
but honestly, i'm quite close to giving up

Welcome to the Forum, jello. :)
Yes this is the correct place for your question.
As for your problem, you do not have to install the game, in order to play it. Just type "star" in the Dos prompt. If you try to install the game it simply copies the exact same files to another directory. The reason the install program is asking for disk 1 is that you probably have crossed out the speech pack. This feature does not exist on the english version.
Keep in mind that this is a German remake of a game in English. Germans, in particular, are not good translators. (Watch out for the occasional mistranslations in the game). And there are very few germans who speak English. That is the reason why speech is not included.
The option is only left in the install program. They probably forgot to remove it.
Hope this has helped you a bit.
(Remember to download the manual and map too).
(Also it took me some time to make them  )

Weird, really.... I tried running the game on disk C, D, E, tried running it from a long directory name.... just can't seem to get that error :(
When does the error appear exactly?
Tom Henrik
06-05-2004, 08:36 PM
By the way.
The first game in the Trilogy (Blade of Destiny) is on the way. It is all up to Kosta now. He has all the files. I would suggest you try to play this game before Star Trail.
This way you will also give me some time to try and find a solution to the apparant problems in Star Trail.
I do not have the manual for that game, but you really do not need it.
(The only difference between that manual and the one for Star Trail is the minimum requirements for character creation).

Using either DosBox or a regular Dos Command Box in Win XP. I have the game files that I downloaded in a directory c:/Dosgames/Star. I change the directory into the Star Directory and type in Star. I then get the Guru Meditation Error in orange letters. If I type install instead of star, I get the message to pick A or B drive.
Wonder if it is just Win XP. Thanks for the help.
Tom Henrik
07-05-2004, 07:17 AM
I can't understand that Win XP should be the problem, since I use it. When I play the game, I use the DosBox version downloaded from this site.
That works for me. :?
You guys who have problems with red and orange text appearing, can you see or hear ANYTHING from the game? (Pictures, the intro video, music being played...) or do you get troubles immediatly after typing STAR.
Kosta
07-05-2004, 09:59 AM
I have re-uploaded the game, this time with the installation program so all of you having trouble, re-download the game and install it from scratch. Hope that helps :?
jello
07-05-2004, 02:00 PM
You guys are pretty cool for helping with this problem so fast. I really didn't expect you to answer for awhile.
The orange screen appears immediately after I type star to start the game. There is no sound or other screen or video, nothing but this black screen with orange letters that starts off "Star Trail Guru Meditation".
I will be downloading it again as you have suggested and will try again.
Thanks so much.

Yeah! We rock! 8)
No, but seriously... This site is all about having fun. And playing old games is fun. Not being able to play the game, however, is NOT! So we try to help everyone.
Besides, we do not want to have a game on the site that is unplayable. We try to avoid this as best we can. Therefore it is important that people, such as yourself, tells us about problems that you encounter.
I am also on the look-out for a new Star Trail on the net, so that we can try to change the files. Just in case it is the old file that has a problem.
jello
07-05-2004, 06:38 PM
Don't be modest, you guys really do rock. Thank you, thank you , thank you. I re downloaded the new file as suggested and installed and it works. I haven't really got into the game, but I was so excited that it worked - sound and everything, that I wanted to let you know, so you would know that it worked. And did I mention - Thank you. :P

Let's hope it will work for Stroggy too.
Stroggy
07-05-2004, 07:33 PM
yeah it works
but its quite confusing
I believe the movies are skipped
so i don't have a clue what the game is about (except that I have to find the salamander stone)
movement is odd to even frustrating
Tom Henrik
08-05-2004, 09:08 AM
Ok.
That does it.
I am not going to rest until I have another file of the game!
Since it seems that there are a lot of problems with this game, I would suggest people to run an AntiVirus program on the folder. Maybe this folder is the cause for the deletion of abandonia.com.
And, Stroggy. I have looked into the thing you said about the videos being gone. That is not the case. The videos work, but the first sentence seems to be missing. Your first quest is to locate the Salamander Stone, so you have gotten the information you need.
But, as I said, I'm going to locate another download.
Stroggy
08-05-2004, 09:11 AM
still its quite strange
like when you talk to that elf
the first line you read is "so you see"
as if at first he had explained some long detailed story
and when you talk to the second person in the tavern he starts of with saying "and since when have you heard of elvish..."
quite odd
anyway I have had a small virus tampering with internet explorer for a few days now
It is possible that it started when I downloaded Star Trail
but it could also be something else

Too many problems with it.
As for the manual, it is possible that Kosta forgot to upload it after the site was deleted.
I'll send him a copy.

This game is really hard to find on the net. I will not give in. I will find another version. One that works, and does not ask stupid questions before allowing saving.

What do you mean by the manual doesn't work?
Can't you download it, or is it something written in the manual?
Unfortunately, I wrote that manual myself because I could not find it on the net...
As for the manual for Blade of Destiny, it is on it's way...
Just hold in there for a couple of days, and I should have it fixed.

Hmmm, couldn't it be possible to host the actual (english) version of the game AND the other (German) one? The fact that you can't save in the English one makes it pointless to play it... so, if anybody could host it it would be fine, altough a working English one would be great.

The game is copy-protected... :(
This is something we discovered after the game was put on the page... :?
I am working on the case, right now. It is I who uploaded the game to the sit, so it is I who is responsible for the error! :x
I would suggest you download Blade of Destiny instead, since it is the first game in the trilogy... and the Realms of Arkania trilogy is loosely connected. This will give me some more time to fix the problem with the copy-protection.
I am, as I write this, downloading over 7 different Star Trail games on eMule, and I am also searching the net for a version that is save-able. I'm also, thanks to FreeFreddy, trying to crack the game with some files he has given me from the original game.
So I am hoping that I will soon find or get a solution to the problem.
Please bear with me while I am doing all this.

sorry but who said you could just unzip the files in a folder and run Star to play???
i mean ...... there IS NO Star file in the zip file
and this is just great ................ i installed the game and run star, i says
Star Trail (blah blah) requires a minimum of 688128 Byte free XMS/EMS Memory. Your system only has 1114112 Bytes.
YOu don't need to be a super maths guy to figure that i DO have enough memory
FreeFreddy
04-06-2004, 06:39 AM
This is a known problem as the game supports only 16 MB expanded memory and shall crash if you have more. My game never crashed although I have 1 GB memory, but this doesn't mean that it couldn't on other PC's. So I have a small program supplied with the game called "EATXMS.EXE" that reduces your XMS-only memory to 16 MB for the game and makes the rest unavailable, but don't worry, if you run the game in Dos-shell, after you exit it your memory is back again. I could e-mail it to anyone that needs it (it's more than simple to use), hoping that perhaps that would help with the memory-start-problem. The guests just PM me your e-mail adress and the file will be there.

You can find Shadows over Riva in www.suprnova.org in bittorent form. The only catch is..since the original game has cd audio, the version available is musicless!!! and since the game had absolutely incredibly music..but take a look anyway[/i]
FreeFreddy
07-06-2004, 06:04 AM
Well, ths ".torrent"-files make no sense for me, as I cannot do anything with them, so I think this is somewhat stupid page. :?
Anonymous
07-06-2004, 10:53 AM
well you first have to download a bittorent client.Basically it's a filesharing program that breaks the file into thousands of little pieces so you can download them from users around the world.Go to sourceforge.net and type torrent in the search box.Choose one (bittorent is the easiest) and run the torrent file through that.

Hello all
U can download Realms of Arkania: Star Trail from www.gamebird.dk.
U will download .exe file which will extract game to specified folder. Run install from extracted game directory and specify folder where u want to install the game. Be sure to copy crack file to game dir and run it there cuz if u dont do it u wont be able to save. I ran the game from DosBox and it's working fine.
Have Fun all

I feel like such a fool....
The download on this site has a crack file in it...
All of you who already have downloaded the game from this site, CAN save... Just run the crack file BEFORE you run the game.
It will still ask for the words on pages yattah yattah ya... but just type whatever you wish. And the game is saved.
How could I have missed that file?!
But I would still advice you to play the Blade of Destiny first. Just to get the chronologie correct.

btw...is it possible in Star Trail to make movement like it was in Blade of Destiny?
Tom Henrik
08-06-2004, 07:17 PM
I'm not sure I understand what you mean...
The only difference between the movement in these two games are that the moves in Star Trail is animated, so it gives you a greater feeling of moving in reality.
Both games uses both mouse control or keyboard control.
FreeFreddy
08-06-2004, 08:35 PM
He meant that cubic turn and move which is only the way to move in Blade of Destiny. Yes it is possible to have the same movement in Star Trail like in Blade of Destiny, you can set this in options menu, F3-button if I recall right, then look for something like 3D-movement (could have another name in English version), either way I'm sure you'll find it there.
I, for my part, prefer the sliding 3D-movement which Star Trail offers, it just looks better for me and is much easier to steer.
Tom Henrik
08-06-2004, 08:56 PM
I could not agree more, my semi-russian-german friend. I really like the 3D movement. Makes the game more alive.

The full, version of "Realms of Arkania III: Shadows Over Riva" can be downloaded here (ftp://ftp.efind.ru/pub/games/vga_only/riva.rar) (45MB).
I didn't manage to turn the sound on so I don't know whether it's just my system or the soundfiles are missing. Other than that, the game seems like a full version, saving is possible, and is compatible with Windows XP. It also features full (although primitive) 3D graphics.
It would be cool if it was added to this site's game lists. :)
Tom Henrik
09-06-2004, 05:14 AM
Wow!
That is the smallest file I have seen on the game! My findings mostly includes Shadows over Riva files that are over 100 MB!!
(Which needless to say, is too big for the site at this time).
Thanks!
I'll download it immediately and start to play it. If it is indeed the fullversion, then it might end up on the site.
(I say might, because Kosta have the final desicion in this... and 40 MB is still pretty big!)

Anonymous
10-06-2004, 12:32 AM
The link does work, but the FTP it's on is limited to 700 downloads at any given time (from all users), so if they are all taken you will need to wait.
The game is missing the sound and cutscenes (which is a pity since they are made in quite good 640x480), but the gameplay itself is intact.
FreeFreddy
10-06-2004, 06:05 AM
Well, I lukily have the full game on CD so I can enjoy the nice music and the interesting cutscenes. Only there's that problem that it breaks up after the intro under WinXP or 98, but haven't try it under DosBox yet, perhaps it would go on there.

Tom Henrik

Please help me, the game works without bigger problems but too slowly to be playable. I finished it long ago on my old comp. so I know how it should work. Now I have to run it in dosbox and the speed is terrible..is there no other way?
And there is this problem with battles, sometimes everything dissapears and I have to switch to autocombat to finish the battle because both enemies and my party are either invisible or (when moving) all over the place(every animation of movement stays on the screen) the game did this years ago so I suppose there is no way to prevent it ???
Thanks for your reply and sorry for my english.
Tom Henrik
16-06-2004, 07:03 PM
Star Trail is not completely compatibel with DosBox.
Therein lies the core of the problem. The best way to run this game is through the useage of Dos.
I know this is not the good news you were hoping for, but it is the awful truth... :(
Anonymous
17-06-2004, 08:14 AM
Yes there is this cutscene with the priest of Phex which plays just fine.Then..just when it finishes.. dosbox shuts down with some king of segmentation error display. I'll probably just skip the temple and go straight to Tjolmar if there is no other way..
The speed seems to go just fine on dosbox..Have you tried to emulate more Cpu cycles/min? I run it on 150 Mhz with 32 Ram.

Me neither.
But if I am correct, you can find alot of information on the net as to how this is done. One thing I am absolute sure of, is that you will need a patch. Your "Blade of Destiny" charachters will walk around with "baby-heads" witout the patch.
If you find out how you transfer your old crew to "Star Trail", then please share it with the rest of us.
FreeFreddy
24-06-2004, 07:13 AM
You just need to copy the saved game from Blade of Destiny in to savegame's directory of Star Trail, it will be converted automatically to Star Trail savegame if you load that savegame (should be converted, if it fails, load it again), that's it.

Hey, I probably won't be sticking around on the forums too long, but I'd just like to take a moment and thank you guys for hosting this awesome game. This is the best game I've ever played and I've been looking for it for a long time, I really want to thank you. I remember sitting next to my dad watching him play this for hours when I was a kid, and when my grandmother gave me a copy of it so many years ago as a present. I played this game for hours on end, it really is my favorite game. I can't really express how thankful I am. This site is great, you guys rock. Thanks a lot!

But seeing as I already have the English versions... I don't need the other in German as well :)

Oh no!! Star trail seems to crash right after you exit the Temple of Phex in Tiefhusen! Have any of you experienced the same problem?
I came across this problem when playing the german version with DosBox. I'm not exactly sure why there is an error, but here's my solution: IT was caused by the mous. The moment i moved the mouse the game crashed. The solution is to cut off the mouse just for this little scene, play it and save it right after leaving the temple using your keyboard. After that you can start the game again and use the mouse again, at least that's how I solved this little problem in the german version.

I really really want to play this game but I can't get it to run! When i extract the files there is no star.exe only a file called star.fn. so when i type star at the prompt it is not recognized as a command. Also, when i try to run the crack file it says "Error: Unable to locate file to patch!" What am i doing wrong? Please help!

Hmm, tried lowering the CPU cycles?
Also perhaps try this:
Find in dosbox.conf a line that looks like this - "output=surface". Above you should see the available options.
"# output -- What to use for output: surface, overlay, opengl, openglnb, ddraw."
Try experimenting with them. If that doesn't help, well, :help:

Hi.
If anyone is intersted you can get NPC's to use as your characters. This works in Arkania I, I'm not sure about part II. Just use Dos-prompt to copy the files renamed as .chr instead of .npc - ie. in the directory with the character info "copy *.npc *.chr". If you want to transfer them to the next game in the series, you need to open a game add those new characters to your team and save it again, then transfer the save game file.
I don't know if you're still looking for a Blades of Destiny manual but you can find one on www.the-underdogs.org
Cool site you have here.

Forgot to add,
Is anyone going to upload Arkania III onto this site? I thought that it was protected by copyright law so I was surprised when I read that. If you do I'd be interested in knowing how you get on with the music aspect.

Hi. I had a question about the game play itself. I played this game years ago and really liked it. My favorite part was character creation. I just downloaded the game and got it to run under XP (although with no sound and the mouse is funky) and went and created a couple of characters. But I never got past the first screen with the attributes to the skill selection screens. I thought I remembered being able to select skills at initial character creation, but does upgrading skills not come until you get a level up?
Thanks.

Hi everybody! In the old days I praised this game, worshipped it! However I couldn't play it, because the graphics got really bad in the combat. So bad that I couldn't see anthing after a while. I regretted it until today. I thoght I'll give the game another try with XP, super machine, fixes and patches.
Again the graphics get all screwed when I use magic in the combat. Like in the old days!!!! I tried to run the patch, but when I do it it says it is missing a file: PATCH.RTP. everything else works fine, only when I use magic in the battle...
PLEASE, PLEASE help... many thanks!

Dear Tom henrik,
I read your comment on saving the game. When I try to run the crack.com-file, is says Error: unable to locate the file to patch. I try to run this file after I installed the game, but before I play it. Do you have any idea how crack the game in another way?
thanks in advance,

Yeah I checked that out. They charge $25 to mail a simple CD! I'm not paying 4 times as much for shipping than for the actual game. That's just a waste of money.

Try putting fix.com in the game directory and running it. You can find that in the zip you downloaded the game from.
After that, start the game with:
star /g:bios
That extra command should take care of the colors getting all screwy. That works for me, and now I don't get scrambled combat graphics or screwy colors after spells like lightning or in conversations with NPCs.

Take only the necessary amount of leather equipment from the chest and equip it.
Light a torch and hold it to the picture.
Well and my problem is, that i can find only some kind of wall (it's wery near of stairs):wall: .. but i haven't been able to find any kind of picture or something:eeeeeh:

There's a door, behind it is a chest with couple of leather jackets and leather boots (they are inverted compared to original boots). You need to put for each of your chars the jackets and the boots on and walk on the red tiles that go from there. Then you'll reach the picture you read about and use the ignited torch on it. ;)

The shops are only opened once every week. It is the town fair. So you have to wait a whole week for them to open.
It just so happens that you begin the game the day before the fair, so that when you wake up the shops are there to help you get much needed supplies. :ok:

Shadows over Riva won't even work well under DosBox, as it's too slow there. It needs at least Pentium 100 to run smoothly and DosBox emulates only up to an 486DX4 100 with the more fast PC's today, speak at around 14000 CPU cycles maximum, which isn't fast enough for Shadows over Riva. Well, unless you the entry in the dosbox.conf from core=normal to core=dynamic which should allow to at least double the CPU cycles. Didn't try that yet, though. :)

I can answer Tom's query about importing your Blade of Destiny party to Star Trail. Simply copy your final Blade game, (where it says "Which game do you want to save) after the final battle, to your save game directory in Star Trail. First time you load the game in Star Trail, it will say "Game Successfully Converted". Hope that helps.
I have a query for you. After the patch is installed (I'm playing with the original Cd based game) do you load your game, or do you have to run the patch? I t used to work, but on the Disk based game. That was in DOS. I 'm now using Windows 98SE. Hope this makes sense, that I'm not babbling total nonsence, and you or someone knows what to do. Because I'm currently playing with the "Baby Heads". :kosta: :kosta: :Titan: :help:

Personally I have never imported characters, so I can't help you. I only know it is possible. But it also makes the game too easy. It's like playing the game in GOD MODE. Simply no fun at all.
Hi Guys!
Is it possible to run the game on Windows XP? If yes, tell me how to do it, please!
If I try it, there's always the message "can't find patch file" and the crack doesn't work too.
Please send me some answeres.

That is actually all you need to get the game running.
You must mount the C:\ in order to use DOSBox, and the DOSBox tutorial explains how. :ok:
I did it like the tutorial tells me. I mounted C: and D: for alternative but in DOSBox is "Z:" shown anyway.
I typed in
[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.
mount C C:\DOS\CDDrive
mount E E:\ -t cdrom
C:
CLS
and I installed everythin in a folder calles "flash" on Drive C
(E is my CD drive)
I also copied the CRACK into the new folder and started it. --> Message "File successfully" (shown for half a second)
That's what the tutorial tells me. I don't know what i did wrong. Did I forget to change something else?

What is "CLS" command doing there? Try removing that and see if it changes anything.

CLS means as much as "Clear screen" and does exactly that, too. :)
Gamefreak

It seems by the way, that there's no such folder as C:\DOS\CDrive, else DosBox would change over to this folder then after typing in C:...
Maybe you need to mount a folder with another name?. :)
That's what the tutorial tells me. There' also mentioned "CLS" at the end.
I think I should give up. I try to get the game from somewhere else. May be that's easier...
Thanks for help!

Well, but from what you're saying, the problem appears to be DOSBox, not the game itself, so getting the game elsewhere probably won't help you much. You don't happen to have an old DOS-computer somewhere by any chance?

Ok, do like this
opent the folder of the game where star trail is... drug and drop the game start exe on the dosbox icon on the desktop, if you don't have make one... my S. T. works this way and i dont have to print no codes :ok:
Hi! Thanks a lot!
Now it works! And so easy!
Is there a way to start the programm in fullscreenmode? the window is a little bit small..
The Fifth Horseman

Open Dosbox.conf and you'll quickly notice fullfixed and something called fullresolution or something like that (it's next line after fullfixed, I think). Fullfixed=false should be changed to fullfixed=true, and the other to 640x480.

I'm playing RoA 3: Shadows over Riva right now, but this is the only forum I've found that is addressing this series of games. And since Riva is a refined version of the Star Trail engine, I'm hoping that my questions are directly relevant to players of both games. Most RPG forums where this topic is mentioned simply draw a "huh?!?"
At any rate, there are some play issues that the manual really doesn't address.
1. When one of your magicians does the wand ritual, it drains a *lot* of his or her AP's. The only way I know of to gain those back is simply to sleep for several days. You can also cast a healing spell on the magician, Rest the Body, Rest the Mind, so that the magician accumulates the AP's quicker, but still you *do* have to sleep it off. That said, is there any penalty for not getting on with the game as quickly as possible? Can you spend days just exploring the town, calling on every residence in the hope of getting that important clue (or an NPC), with impunity?
2. The manual also states that magicians get "house spell" bonuses, which are typically +2-3. But it doesn't state what the plus is! Is it the "to hit" roll? Damage? Reduced Astral Point cost?
This game is, believe it or not, the first RPG I've played since my pen-and-paper days back in the early 1980's. I got the game based on Tom's rave review herein, and also here: http://www.geocities.com/ataniel/arkreview.htm
I kinda like the way the engine is *not* capable of showing everything the way a modern game would, as the text that pops up when something occurs is very similar to having the DM describe things to you. Makes for an atmospheric game. And the music is beautiful and already I can see that the story is going to be quite involved, which to me is the main reason for playing an RPG. If it's just hack 'n slash, I'd rather play a good wargame. Enough rambling.
Thanks for your thoughts!

You are absolutely right about 14,000 being about the max cycles you can use with Riva on DosBox. (I'm using DosBox 6.3 with the D-Fend front end.) Just to get it to 14,000 I had to bump the frameskip to 2.
Unfortunately, however, you can't use the dynamic core to boost your framerate. At least on my rig with 0.63, the cpu core had to be normal for the game to even work. Now the game is indeed playable using the above configuration, but it's a little slow and choppy in the 3D world (which, btw, is quite a bit better than the one in Star Trail).
So don't use DosBox, use VDMSound instead! Using VDMSound the game plays perfectly smoothly in WinXP.

Thanks for having this here!
I'm currently considering buying it...again.... :kosta:
But...
The version downloaded is behaving strangely.
In (any) combat, after a handful (10?) of turns, the graphics just get totally messed up (hard to describe, but kinda like the computer was too fast or something, everything except the checkered 'board'/floor dissappers, and when I move my mouse, bits and pieces are drawn again, etc etc....)
Anyway, when I somehow manage to give the controls to the computer/autofight the fight finally ends, after some partially invisible fighting. BUT, afterwards we all die - even if we won the fight(!), sometimes one is left alone, but im unable to do anything but wait for him to die too, and then game ends.....
Believing my computer was too fast or some strange RAM problem I tried on other machines:
-My current celeron 566, win98 - no go, no matter what setup I use in-game or on shortcut
-A Pentium-200, also win98 - same happens.
- and the final letdown, a Pentium100 PURE DOS with all the legacy hardware, which I KNOW this game has worked on before (sold it....) - NO GO......
So, a reasonable question would then be - is this 'release' bugged ???
I've only installed, and then 'cracked' it. Don't remember if 'patched' (patch.exe)...
I'm NOT using Dosbox, BTW, but that shouldn't matter ? I get sound, normal gameplay etc in win98 (and DOS is DOS, right ?), only fighting gets *meep*d up...

Hey guys thank you for uploading my for years most favoured game...Played it back in 1996 (or something alike) when it came out in the very first Gold Games Collection (the German version of it : Sternenschweif).I also play Realms of Arkania (Das Schwarze Auge (DSA))the Pen and Paper game so Im double thankful...I would play with my own version but it doesnt work anymore(not even in dos box)...Your version does however the movement is cruicial...I saw that was mentioned before but there was no real answer to that Problem...I really love the game and I would more then like to play it again but it takes 5 seconds to move 1 space...and its really a difficult task to move where you want to for you usually turn a piece too far etc. Do you have ANY ideas how to fix that?PPPPLLEEEEEEEAESE ;-)
Thanks in advance and thanks again for uploading this great game!

Hi guys and gals,
I'm so excited to have found this game! It was my favorite when I was a kid, but I've gotten stuck on a really dumb part and I wondered if anyone could help me out. I'm at the Finsterkomm pit, and I have the Golden Key and everything, but I can't figure out how to use it at the door. I've tried putting it in my lead characters hand, and on a key ring, and a bunch of other things, but everytime I get close to the door it just gives the options of 1)breaking it down 2)picking the lock 3)cast foraman. So I don't know what to do, I'm sure its something simple, so simple that its not mentioned in the stratedgy guides, but if you could help me out, I'd appreciate it.

Wow I'm glad I found this game. It has been a while since I've seen it. I got to see Star Trail as the original german version when my high school buddy worked at Sir-Tech. I got to hang around the office with him and check out all the new games before they reached the shelves. To bad Sir-Teck sold out to WoC...no more Wizardry games....He also wrote the complete walkthrough book for it. I still have the copy he gave me. If I can find it I will try to scan it in if you guys at abandonia want to post it.

If remember correctly, you can resurrect dead party members at the temples, but not all temples, I think. It's long time now since I played the trilogy, but I think it's the temples of Tsa and Boron. Well, if I'm wrong and you can't resurrect them, you can import new characters in your party everytime, just create them at one of the temple. Of course, losing a high-level advanced character is a bad thing, especially since high-level character don't die so easily. But there are some places in the game... :sneaky:

Alright-I would like to ask the same question that has been going on throughout this forum: how do I get this game to work?
I am using DOSbox, and i was able to get Blade of Desitiny to work, but for the life of my, this one i can't. I extracted the downloaded files to a folder (c:/star) and this included the crack and the patch. in dosbox this is as far as I get
z:>mount c c:/star
z:> c:
c:> crack.com
error! unable to locate patch!
Well, I have the patch-and frankly it looks like all i have are patches and such. looking at the files i downloaded it does not look like the game is there-there isn't a star.exe (i see a star.fn-but it won't open)...so how do i get this crack to function? The wording on the website here that says "To play the game, install it to a different folder, then copy the Crack file into the new folder. After running the crack the game will work. "
well, by installing it should i run the instalation program (i don't think i had to do that for Blade)? it tells me to insert a disk into A: or B: drive-and i get stuck there...so...simply put can someone write out a clear, step by step method of opening this little devil? (example command promps would be helpful.) thanks.

Hmm, you're right, there's no star.exe or any other executable that would look anything close like starting the game. Guess the game was uploaded without the admins checking them. Try on other sites, like Abandoneer (http://www.abandoneer.com/games.php?gameid=88), there the archive contains star.exe and anything the game needs, unlike here.
The Fifth Horseman
09-12-2005, 11:38 AM
I'm pretty sure we have a correct archive here, checking....
Odd.
I am pretty sure people here have managed to get this game to run.
And Gamefreak, it was actually ONE OF THE ADMINS THEMSELVES who has supplied and reviewed the game. Kind of doubtful he would upload a faulty one.
Checking it in more detail...
Oookay. Got it running.
1. Unpack the files to a temporary directory somwhere on your HDD. Something like C:\Tmp. The path must NOT contain directory names longer then 8 characters or it will simply not work.
2. Run Install.exe
3. Choose destination directory and drive - must NOT be the same as current directory, and must NOT contain directory names longer then 8 characters.
4. Wait for the game to install. You can now delete the directory where you unpacked the installation files.
5. Copy the Crack.com and Fix.com to the directory where you installed the game. Run them.
6. Run Star.exe and enjoy the game.

Oh yes, 1Ghz is little too little for DosBox, the emulation would only be fast enough for less demanding games like Tetris or Wolfenstein 3D or similar. Try it on a 2.5Ghz machine and your mouse problem will go ;)

Can anybody to say how I can to start Star Trail with my party of Blade of Destiny with the original faces?
It will be great to continue the story with the characters that saved Thorwal in Blade of Destiny.
Thanks, bye.
Gamefreak

Copy the savegame from the folder of Blade of Destiny to the folder of Star Trail and then open the savegame in Star Trail. It will then convert automatically to the Star Trail format and the party members will be taken over, without all skills and stats and almost all items, but not all. For example you won't be able to keep the Blade of Destiny.

There is also a speech pack for this game (I have it and the game somewhere on diskettes). Used to play this game like crazy.=)
IIRCyou could use bardskills and seduction to get money in taverns by entertaining the guests.
Gamefreak
27-01-2006, 04:01 PM
And stealing to get money. In all three cases worthwhile to save though, if your performation isn't appreciated by the locals (low skills) you'll get either kicked out or in case of stealing might even need to pay large sum to escape being imprisoned for some time (bad for health if I remember right).
About the graphics glitch when using magic (changing into random colors:
I had the same problem, but it was rather easily overcome by changing the graphics display options in dosbox. For me, this glitch stopped to happen once I switched from scaler normalx2 to one of the other scalers (look in the dosbox.conf to change).
However, I ran into another problem: after fighting a while, suddenly somthing goes wrong with display: I can only see the grid, characters and scenery have disappeared. Strangely enough, they do appear again when using some other menu options, but as soon as I go back to the action menu, I can not see anything.
Did anyone find a solution to this second problem? Changing parameters in dosbox did not work thus far.
Gamefreak
31-01-2006, 10:57 AM
This problem with only the battlefield without characters, enemies & background I had earlier too when I played Star Trail on old Pentium 100 with Dos. The only solution I found for this was just to load the saved game before the fight and enter the fight again, then anything is there again. That seems just to be a bug in the game that happens sometimes.
Although this with the graphics glitch in DosBox, I don't have it whether I cast spells or something else during battles. Instead I have this glitch in the conversations, when I enter one the colors mess up and then anything is hardly visible. That said, I play the original bought German version of the game on CD, not the one from this site. I'll try your solution with the scaler, thanks for the tip
So after getting rid of the random-colors problem,
I think I found the solution for the scrambling of sprites during combat.
Search the package for a file named "fix.com"
Place it in the game directory, and run it.
That did the trick, at least for me.... :tomato:
So finally I can start off and play this great game!

Hey, I just discovered that fifth horsman actualy already told to use the fix.com in hit post on Dec 9 2005, 12:38 PM.

What amazes me, in these days of broadband, I do not understand why we do not have on games like this one the floppy version download (which is the one here) AND the CD version with speech. Yes, the latter would be a 200+mb download, but even on a 256k broadband that is managable. If you only have dialup the 11mb floppy is a sizable download in it's own right, so you'd be happy with that anyway.
I have the same problem with the original Jagged Alliance. Every site just has the floppy version for download with no speech, and yet the reviews of the same game (even on the same site!) they always talk about the great speech in the game in the review.
Abandonia, how about you being the first site that offers the floppy AND the CD version (where different) on games like Star Trail and Jagged Alliance?

Well there a little matter of server space and server cost. If we'd start putting up 200MB downloads the serves space would be filled up in an instant.
So the sizes of download are not to ensure you could download quickly, but to ensure we don't run out of space too soon. The general policy is - no updates bigger then 100MB and even those are extremely rare (anything bigger then 50MB should get special confirmation by the site's owner).
uk_john2005

That's a cop out. There are just not enough games like that out there, where the floppy version is there, but the CD one isn't. And the reason I said why not be the first, was because nearly all the games on this site are available elsewhere and links are available, so to say "we have the CD version of this, but due to server space there are some other games we might not have, but we are confident 100 other sites have it for download" would be an easy step. It would also be possible. I am sure. to take a few of the less downloaded games off for 6 months while the CD version was up, and then see how the server changes. Was the 200mb causing more problems than the lesser downloaded games were doing? Was it a big difference? The other point is I am guessing at 200mb. It might be under 100mb. Plenty of older CD games with speech are under 100mb, even while some are 300mb.
Underdogs makes big files available from them but through bitorrent. Some sites break down a big download in to smaller indivual downloads, a) to make it easier for people with slower connections, but also B) as it spreads the server workload.
And while I might be able to find Star Trail on ebay or somewhere, I have been looking for the original CD version of Jagged Alliance for 3 years now and ever since the release of Jagged Alliance 2, it has fallen off the face of the Earth!
I am much more interested when I hear "we tried that, but it didn't work", but in the world today I am getting a little fed up with "haven't tried it, but I am sure it wouldn't work".

And the reason I said why not be the first, was because nearly all the games on this site are available elsewhere and links are available, so to say "we have the CD version of this, but due to server space there are some other games we might not have, but we are confident 100 other sites have it for download" would be an easy step.
:eeeeeh: :eeeeeh: :eeeeeh:
It's like telling one store - be the first to have this really expensive junk and get rid of everything else. If people come for other stuff you can send them to other stores, you'll still have that one big piece to sell to people who're interested.
Why on Earth should we take games down, just so we could have one or two large files??? Doesn't make sense.
If you simply want the full version - get it. We don't have it on the site and you obviously know many other sites (you even mentioned a few), so talk to them.

Heck, if you have broadband - install eMule and search for Star Trail in the Kademlia network.
Easy way to get large - and often also rare - stuff.

If it was, I'd been banned a long time ago.
It's only been yesterday when I have obtained the CD version of Flashback through the network - and that one isn't so popular, oh no.

Hello all. I've also been having problems getting this game to run. But i think i've fixed it now following some of the suggestions here.
Anyway as a longtime fan of the first game in the series(oh those amiga days :) ) i was very happy to find this here after spending years trying to find an origonal copy(which i'll still search for). So thanks to the guys here for hosting it :ok:
Anyway looking at the many posts about memmory error messages that people were getting, and having the same errors whenever i launched 'star.exe', i thought i'd provide some more help on that subject.
I guess this might be useful for non-XP(and non DOSBOX) users like myself.
After killing my computer for a short while after messing around with my Config.sys and Autoexec files trying to resolve the memmory error messages, i did finaly manage to find the EATXMS.EXE file that had been discussed here.
You can find it on this site, along with lots of usefull info on running old games:
http://www.oldskool.org/guides/oldonnew/resources
the way i resolved the problem was to use a boot-disk(the one available on this site in the utilities section worked fine for the experiment) then after booting with that disk i went into the EATXMS folder in DOS and typed:
eatxms 32000
followed by enter, which lost me 32MB of my memmory, which in turn enabled me to launch the game from its folder by typing:
star
followed by enter.
The PC i was running it on is a P166 with 48MB ram and win98se(my 'old game' pc).
the command 'eatxms 32000' made sure i was running around the 16MB memmory limit the game needs to run and will need to be adjusted depending on the ammount of memmory you may have in your machine.
e.g If you have 128MB of memmory you would use 'eatxms 112000' (112,000KB)or something like that, you may have to experiment untill you see the title screen.
Now the next issue i have is trying to work out why i seem to start 15-20 days into the game, with no clear option to re-start from the begining of the game with my own characters.
Anyway i hope this helps some of the people trying to run this game that were having the annoying:
'Star-Trail needs xxxxxxxx ammount of EMS+XMS memmory, and you only have xxxxxxxxxxxx(a bigger number!) available'
type error messages.
In the meantime i'm starting out in the first game in the series(which has all the music and seems to be the full game - excellent!).

Must be a saved game that was there that loads everytime you start the game. Whenever you save a game in all three games of the trilogy, there's automatically saved a game which can't be loaded from the loading menu, called lastgame. (that's right, without 3-letter ending). It's still a normal savegame, you can try and rename it to xxx.gam (xxx for whatever name you choose) and then load, it will be loaded. It's there for immediately loading automatically when the game starts.
All you need to do is to save a game on your own and the lastgame. will be modified to load your game everytime. And when not, remove the write-only attribute from it (right-click...), then save your game.

erhh... when i start the game it loads some old savefile automaticliy...how do i start another party/ start over?
Gamefreak

Add already existing characters into your party, or if there're none create some yourself. It's anyway adviseable to create own characters than to add the pre-created ones that are automatically there, you can make your characters what you like them to be and they can also be better with some time taken to generate good stats for them.

Oh, sorry, and for starting a new game - click on the disk icon to load or save a game, and choose New Game there. That should do it if I remember correctly. If not, just delete the file lastgame. in the Games-folder and you will start over when you start the game.

(For instance the Nintendo Emulator uses the F5 key).
ya ive been having this problem too  and it really makes the game hard to play or get anywhere without leaveing the computer on forever , does anyone have ANY way to save the game?
Gamefreak

Yes, I have one - play the game from a bought CD instead of a downloaded version. Save-possibility guaranteed plus speech in the game and nice CD quality music :D

Have you checked if Read Only attribute is on any of the game files? Disable it.
See if that changes anything.
Also, there is no saving of emulator state in DosBox, simply because it is much more complicated then console emulators.

No theres no read-only attributes on any of the game files.. is there any way i can download a manual that shows the real pages , because the one off of this site isnt the real one so it doesnt work. thanks for the help tho.
Hello!
First of all I`d like to thank Abandonia for bringing such great old games. You guys realy rule! :ok:
Could anyone tell me, please, how to get rid of those silly babyfaces that appear after importing my party from BoD? :help:
Also I`d like to know, where to find that myterious "FIX.COM" file you were talkin about...? It`s not in the package I downloaded! Could someone give me a link, where to get it?
Thank you very much for help!!! :bye:

The "baby faces problem" has been issued a number of times. Check the earlier posts in this thread, and run a search inside Troubleshooting forum. There should be a solution posted somwhere.
"Fix.com" is not needed for the version of the game that is currently for download.

In the troubleshooting section there`s only something like "if you know, how to use hex editor..." ...which I don`t  Is there any other way to solve this?
And the next complication I discovered is that the game runs in the novice mode only. Without those extra skills the game loses half of its magic. I can no longer make a quick-fingered lockpicking shadow of my dwarf and my witch can no longer improve her seducing and dancing skills etc. Its a pitty!
Pleeeease help, I can`t stand waiting for new adventures any longer :kosta:

Are you living in Germany? I could send you a German version of Star Trail that's around 20-30MB which doesn't have any problems to run, neither baby-faces nor saving a game.
As for the changing from Novice to Expert mode, press F3 and change from Novice to Expert mode, you can change other options there as well. Be sure to save the game after so that the settings will be saved for current game.

Hex editors are not that hard to operate, trust me. Once you get the basic idea, it's as easy - nay, easier - as breathing.
Google around for "Hex Workshop", it's a decent one.
Thank you all for help, I`ll give it a try :max:

either you are not using DosBox (but you think you are doing that), or you've f***ed up the config file.
And stop your tyranny over the SHIFT key. ALLCAPS won't get you anywhere.

Search for the following line in dosbox.conf:
[dos]
# xms -- Enable XMS support.
# ems -- Enable EMS support.
Change there ems=true to ems=false and see if that helps. Also search for memsize=XX (whatever memory amount is set in yours) just in the beginning and change it to memsize=16. Might help also.

Would you maybe try running DosBox and then the game first? Because what you described sounds like you tried running the game directly from XP.
Then, if trying with the possible combination of EMS/XMS (both disabled, one disabled, both enabled) yields no result, try running the setup file that should be sitting somwhere in the game directory. If I remember right, there was an option on expanded memory usage.
Gamefreak, I remember Star Trail running on an 8 meg machine smoothly.

well ... yes i've tried to run the game directly from windows ( 98 SE, by the way)
but i have that problem with most of the games in abandonia , i just actualy can play "constuctor" whic is hard , ands "settlers 2"... but then i realize than does dosbox exist , so i tried it then i had a trouble whit the "rendering output" ... my dosbox closes after i could see it ... well i fixed that, it stands in the monitor , but just useless.. and it stills useless . To describe it , it is like this:
i have two windows the diagnostic and the black one (in wich i suposse to could write) but i can't there's just a black arrow in the "writeable" window and i clik it , i push the letters triyng to write but nothing hapends .... that's my situation
i've tried too, all the options for the output.
and sorry for all the missunderstandings

98SE?
Then DOSBox/VDMSound are not an option - and you don't need them either.
These two topics should help.
How to configure DOS for gaming (http://www.abandonia.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=7302)
Win98 - Memory (http://www.abandonia.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=4382)
Another option is to use Abandonia's bootdisk (http://www.abandonia.com/main.php?nav=bootdisk).
PS. TBH = To Be Honest = Honestly, I think that....

i need to generate 6 characters or could ii star just whit one??
kmonster
01-04-2006, 10:55 PM
You can try to play with one character, but I doubt that you would survive the first battle.
The game was created with 6 character parties in mind. It will get far more difficult with smaller parties.
The faster levelling won't help much. A 3-character party with double XP will stand no chance against a 6 character party. The game will be even slower with smaller parties since your battles will last longer.
So I recommend to start with 6 characters, take at least a mage, warrior, dwarf and ice elf.

Hi, apologies if this has already been mentioned, but it seems there is already a pre-existing save file when you download the game. I had to delete the "lastgame" within the games file before I was able to watch the intro and make my own chars.

Wow, I must say that I have throughly enjoyed this site in the last two weeks or so that I've been comming here. Very Very Nice.
I found the link here, because of what happed to HOTU, and it's nice that I found news about HOTU here.
HOTU is of course my favorite site, and I link to it in my webpage.
I have just finished playing some Cresent Hawks and Arena. I remember this one from way back, but was too complicated for me then. (kinda like the first time I read a complicated book) Giving the game a try after 12 years is nice. I've gotten much farther than I did back then.
The only problem I've had with the game so far as far as bugs are concerned. I noticed some wierd palette effects when my elf casts a lightnig bolt spell. I figure maybe the fix is to run in 256 colors, or something.
