Doom, the game that took Wolf3D and made First Person Shooters what they are, and Dark Forces (I think that's its name) the Lucas Arts FPS based on the Star Wars Galaxy and eventually spawning the Jedi Knight series.

Take the sourcecode from Doom, which is released for free by their developers, and compile it. You'll have yourself a free Doom, and legal too :max:

Source code does not contain any media files or content it is jus tthe engine. If you compile it you can make your own levels if you also make the sprites, textures, sounds, etc. Only then will you have a complete game.

Dark Forces is no longer being sold and is in fact abandoned.

So it's the wad-files that you have to pay for?

The Niles

today yes.

Whole .wad format, or just the contents of the ID-software games that uses that?

The Niles

The contents. You pay for the levels and such.

So basically, all those wad-editors're legal, making your own game as a wad-file is legal too, and running it on the engine is as well, just as long as the game you made isn't Doom, Doom 2 or Heretic?

JJXB

yep, people have even made replacement episodes for doom1/2

Which means that, instead of playing Doom, you can make a game more to your friends likings and your friends could make a game more to your likings and you could exchange them, having far more fun with it than with Doom :ok:

Edit: Quick question... the individual parts... sprites, sounds, textures... are they free to be used too, as long as they're not combined into Doom, or is using them illegal too?

im not sure about the legality on that

Anything that they haven't released into the public domain is still copyrighted. The engine may be legally available, but unless they've said otherwise any content from Doom itself isn't, that would include sprites, textures and sounds.

you cant play peoples custom doom wads(pwad) w/out the original doom wad(iwad) so therefor all of that stuff about playing doom levels for free wont wrk, just so u know LOL

I was looking for dark forces, but I can't find it anywere. Stupid lucasarts! Protecting their games, and not selling them anymore.

Anyone know where I can buy/download it ?

Hmm.... you might have to search for a torrent or use your favourite P2P network program and find it. Or check on Lucasarts website to see if they point you in a direction to buy
