I have never been a fan of real strategy games. But this one is an exception. Try K-240 (the prequel) on the amiga before playing this one. 5/5 points. A timeless classic.

I heard it was very similar in idea but the presentation is obvious a lot less polished :). What makes Fragile Allegiance so attractive to play is because of how smooth the entire game feels. You flow from screen to screen and you never feel as if you struggle.

I get an error menssage about no enough memory at dosbox, i mounted it as described in the game page. Any suggestion?

Run LOADFIX.
Reduce amount of available RAM memory in DOSBox (need to modify the config file for that).
Play around with EMS/XMS/UMB values.

red_avatar

Please use a newer version of Dosbox - you're getting that error because you're running an old version. Older versions were set to 4MB memory by default which is not enough to run Fragile Allegiance. You can edit 'dosbox.conf' to increase the memory but you should really use the new Dosbox version: 0.72.

You can get it here:

http://downloads.sourceforge.net/dosbox/DOSBox0.72-win32-installer.exe?modtime=1188160762&big_mirror=0

I did everything described in the review. Got 0.72.
But no matter how much memory I set the game won't start.
This message appears:
"Not enough free disk space. (16MB required)"

You need to first mount a C drive as harddrive, NOT CDROM. Then mount a D drive as CDROM. Then run the game from the C drive. The message you get is caused by trying to run the game from a CD drive.

How to play in multiplayer?
Takes too long to explain that :p try going to the Dosbox forums and looking up info on network setups. It involves setting up Dosbox and setting up a game over the internet.

DOSBOX responds:

Help please?

Ah, this is the wonderful thing called zip files . Zip files delete empty folders when you zip a game. Simply make a folder called _SAVE in the game folder. I'll quickly update the zip for this.

EDIT actually it can't be that unless you deleted the _SAVE folder. I just tried the game and the _SAVE is part of the zip and the game saves fine. Tell me, how did you mount the game?

Ah, this is the wonderful thing called zip files . Zip files delete empty folders when you zip a game. Simply make a folder called _SAVE in the game folder. I'll quickly update the zip for this. no they don't! only if you view them in winzip. if you use free 7zip of other semi decent zipping program (winZIP itself, if you feel rich), you see the packed directories as well, you don't see directories only while it's still unpacked or when you use lame windows default zip manager

or maybe it also depends on where do you zip it? i'm using 7zip and can pack/ unpack empty dirs

red_avatar
18-01-2009, 01:06 PM
I haven't actually tried this for the past 5+ years since I switched to RAR but since Abandonia uses zip files, it's one of the first zip files I compiled (using WinRAR) in years so I figured that ZIP still ditched empty folders but I may be wrong. In any case, he's getting a weird folder because it's basically saying that the folder does not exist when it IS in the archive.

The Fifth Horseman

Perhaps - just perhaps - the unpacker ignored the directory structure?

Doc525
18-01-2009, 08:36 PM
Well, I mounted it the usual way, the way the instructions on the game page here tell me. Everything else works fine. Lemme see if there is a _SAVE file...

Oh yeah, I am having some administrator privilege problems- my computer has a password, and when I try to modify it the usual way- anything in program files, etc... (I have this thing saved in Users) I tell it to go ahead, but it keeps asking me to try again. Might these two be related?
I'm using Vista.

Doc525
18-01-2009, 08:38 PM
Whoa...

The _SAVE is there, but a file called delme is in there- perhaps it needs to be deleted?

red_avatar
18-01-2009, 08:57 PM
No, you simply don't have access to create the file I believe. You said so yourself :p . Vista probably doesn't give DOSBOX access to the _SAVE folder.

Try putting the game on your hard drive outside of the Users or Program Files section and run Dosbox as administrator.

The 'delme' file is there for the problem I mentioned above: ZIP files used to throw out empty folders so unless you had a single file in there, the _SAVE folder would have been thrown out of the ZIP file. Hey, this is a 12 year old game ;).

if you don't have an option to run dosbox as admin, you can move stuff into your local "documents and settings" user folder and you will have all privileges. by the way, don't forget to check that all files and directories are not read-only, in properties

First of all, stay off "fake cd" - it's meant for people who want to get it to work in real DOS, not Dosbox.

Second of all, the idea is that you mount the game as C:\Fragile. What you almost certainly did was mount it as C:\. Also, did you properly mount the D drive?

tommaguzzi
22-01-2009, 04:35 PM
ok no front end this time.

so i start dosbox without the gui and then type

mount c c:\fragile (where the game actually is on my h.d.)
mount d c:\fragile -t cdrom

then what? mount gives a summery of the drives
loadfix allocates 64 m memory
autoexec appears to set the sound
typing dir does not show any fragile .exe files and it wont let me change directories so i dont even know if i'm in the correct one

how do i start the game? sorry i just not very good at this.

thanks lads.

Second of all, the idea is that you mount the game as C:\Fragile. What you almost certainly did was mount it as C:\. Also, did you properly mount the D drive?

Remember what I said? You did exactly like I said ;). DO NOT MOUNT THE GAME FOLDER AS C DRIVE.

Also, make a separate folder for DOS Games or you'll end up mounting your entire C drive which is not healthy.

So:

a) make a folder on your C drive for DOS games. Call it DOSGAMES ;)

b) put the FRAGILE folder in the DOSGAMES folder

c) mount the game like this:

mount c c:\dosgames

NOT c:\dosgames\fragile

The rest is correct. Always try to mount a game so it's in a subfolder of the C: drive since a lot of games don't work properly unless you use the path that was in the zip file.

Are the tutorials in Fargile Allegiance supposed to have speech narrations? If so, they don't seem to be present with my current configuration. I'm running the game in DOSBox 0.72 (default configurations) and mounting the game as a CD, and while music and game sounds are present it seems that speech is missing from the tutorial videos. Any ideas on this situation?

red_avatar
01-02-2009, 07:01 PM
The speech was ripped - I didn't even know the tutorial had speech but then again, I haven't used that tutorial in 13 years. Really though, this game is not that hard. Build living quarters, make sure the colony has air, water, energy and build mines and silos - I think that's most of it. Then sell your ore, scout for other asteroids, etc.

This is weird---I followed the instructions on how to play FA exactly and it worked---the first time. Now I'm trying to play and it doesn't work anymore! :( It keeps telling me I need to insert the CD.

Here's what I'm doing on DOSBox:

mount c c:\games
mount d c:\games\fragile - t cdrom
c:
cd fragile
fragile.exe

Worked like a charm the first time---but now it no longer does. Am I missing something? Help!

Sounds like you changed the settings. In the rip, some things were cut including animations of buildings (which is just dressing - no need for it). If you turn those on in the menu, it will ask for the CD for obvious reasons.

If you mount the game correctly, it should work. Dosbox is a contained system meaning that different system settings have no effect to whether a game works inside Dosbox as long as your Dosbox is properly set up. Follow the settings and it WILL work. I downloaded and tested the archive myself so I know it does.

The Fifth Horseman

You're not missing anything. You have a space in excess:
mount d c:\games\fragile - t cdrom
The commands and arguments have to be entered precisely down to a single character or they won't work (or at best will, but not correctly).
This is the correct syntax:
mount d c:\games\fragile -t cdrom

FYI, I'd suggest to move these three lines:
mount c c:\games
mount d c:\games\fragile -t cdrom
c:
To the [autoexec] section of your DOSBox config file. That way, they'll be executed automatically every time you start DOSBox and you won't have to enter them yourself every time.

I spent ages trying to find this game - but I was looking for K240. Eventually I found this. Bliss!

The problem is (other than the occasional crash) is that I don't know how to save the game, so when it crashes I lose everything, and also that the long games go on for longer than I have time for. Anyone know?

I had the same problem (buffer overflow). I changed dosbox version from 0.72 to 0.65 (on win xp) and everything works good. I tried 0.71 but with this version, the game still generate the same error.

I had 'buffer overflow' with some other dos games, for example with "Reunion", at the beginning of the intro when i hit esc too quickly.

I am having a similar problem - Start the game, the Gremlin Interactive video runs then the Cajji Software screen begins to load and then... Dos/4GW Professional error (2002): transfer stack overflow on interrupt 08H...

Here's what I did. Created c:\games. Created \Fragile in c:\games. Downloaded and unzipped a fresh copy of Dosbox into c:\games\Fragile.
Download and unzip the Fragile Alliance Abandonia files into \Fragile
Start dosbox then enter the following:
mount c c:\games
mount d c:\games\Fragile -t cdrom
c:
cd fragile
fragile.exe

Interestingly, if I click on the Win95 icon in the folder, the game will start and run although without some sound, voices or text in the tutorials.

What I really want is to buy the original CD, but in the meantime I would appreciate any suggestions as to what to do next.

Thanks.

What is "this"? You say "this" happens but without any specific info, we can't help you. If I were to have a guess, you messed with the settings and now the game complains it can't find certain files. Redownload, and do not touch the settings!!! A rip is called a rip for a reason - files had to be dropped to save space and this includes the animations for buildings and blue prints. By activating them, you make the game look for files that don't exist in the rip.

To everyone else: most errors are caused by incorrect mounting. Do not mount the game folder itself as C drive - you need to mount the folder below FRAGILE. DOSBox is a closed program meaning that it should perform the same on all systems regardless of hardware and operating system (with some small exceptions) but buffer overflows and suchlike are caused by different settings or wrong mountings.

The installer you are trying to use is corrupted or incomplete.
This could be a result of a damaged disk, a failed download, or a virus.

As this is a dosbox related problem (though it will probably be a problem related to your software/computer) I advise you to post your problem on Vogons.
When all else fails, you will need to contact either the developers of the software you're attempting to download or your personal computer support channels.

Hi guys,

I've recently downloaded Boxer for Mac OSX (I'm on 10.5.8), which seems to be DosBox 0.73. I downloaded the Fragile Alliance folder from here, and put on the 'Drop Games to Install' icon in Boxer, however, I can't start the game as it asks for the CD. I'm afraid I'm not very technically minded, so I didn't understand the instructions about 'mounting' things, and I don't know if they relate to Boxer. Can someone tell me what to do to get this working?

Thanks in advance!

Rename the directory to D fragile.cdrom. Perhaps you need to copy and rename the copy. And perhaps you need a gamebox. Perhaps you should ask Saccade since he knows that strange program (and has a Mac - that's helpful...).

Luchsen

The game directory. Then you can drag'n'drop it onto Boxer.

But perhaps you have to create a gamebox and drag'n'drop the unrenamed directory and a renamed copy unto it. Then you can start the game from the virtual C drive (the unrenamed directory), and it thinks the CD is in the D drive (the renamed directory).

Since Boxer is built on DOSBox you can probably mount drives manually, doing it twice (for standard C and CD D) on the same directory without having to copy it, but there's nothing about it on Boxer's site. :(

editing configuration file is not enough to set up an ipx network

in order to have fully working ipx in dosbox you (or your friend) need to start server in dosbox first

it's done via command:
ipxnet startserver
^this guy is a server now

then the other person (or more people) need to connect the server via command:
ipxnet connect [hamachi ip of the server]

at this point you can check whether all works or not on the server side inside dosbox output window (the one where it writes commands only), it should be writing things like xx.xx.xx.xx connected

then the game will recognize that you are on a shared ipx network. don't forget to set ipxnet=true in all the dosbox.conf of all the people

In all seriousness: did FA just slip in there, and Red Avatar was instead uploading box scans for this one? Or is the manual actually available, but the game page wasn't updated? Does any reader happen to know of a site where to get it?

Big thanks for the site, brings back so many memories <3

It might have slipped in there accidentally, since I don't see any such document in the system nor on our FTP.

I tried three times to download this game from my past. All three were so corrupted or invalid they weren't able to be extracted. Can someone redo the Scan? I just have been trying for a long time to get it... :(

Btw if you press left-control and mouseover buttons in game, you will get a tool-tip explaing what the button does, just like in the tutorial.

Very helpful for new players!

The scan works fine here btw and I have the original CD anyway.

Hello, I have one question.
Can I use my original game download and just use the FA.bat for it or do I have to use the one supplied? I only lost the CD for the original game, and really want to play.

Does anybody use Power Plants? They're marginally cheaper to construct than the solar buildings, and have a slightly smaller footprint, but use about 7000 credits worth of Asteros per year.

It's just as likely that the archive has been corrupted during the transfer to your machine.
Try redownloading it first.

Nah, I tried several times, all broken, with or without download manager. But it's still possible that's the file is corrupted during transfer to my machine. Would someone be so nice and try downloading it, so we can compare.

I figured out the problem already. It seems that my school only allows download less than 50MB. In usual case, download larger than 50MB will results an error page "request is too large", but it seems that somehow it manage to download it, but only up to 49.9 MB. Sigh.... I really want to play this game...so badly.

you can try to use a download manager which splits the downloadable part into a couple of separate sessions. try flashget or something like that

Sorry to dig up an old and dying thread, but I've been all over the internet trying to figure this one out and have only seen one other person with this problem (earlier post).

I have Windows 7 64-bit so am stuck with using DosBOX 0.74. I have the original legit game CD and made my mounts in DosBOX as below:

mount c c:\games
mount d d:\ -t cdrom

I then navigated to d: and ran INSTALL.EXE. I installed the maximum to C:\FRAGILE and everything completed nicely.

Next I navigated to c:\FRAGILE and typed FRAGILE to run the game. Fragile began to run and allowed me to create a game. When I'm in the game, I can see my first asteroid and even go to the asteroid city planner view. However, when I click on the construction icon, I get the following error and crash to DOS:

Error Whilst Opening "_MA\_MA" : No such file or directory

After doing some investigation, it appears that _MA stores the video files for units and the like. Thing is, there's no _MA\_MA as a file nor sub-directory.

I haven't tampered with my installation and this is probably my 5th attempt at getting this to work - all resulting in the same problem. Any help would greatly be appreciated! Thanks!

I _just_ downloaded the game from Abandonia, as of 30-August-2010. The _ma\_ma folder and file _are_ in the archive. Make sure you are correctly installing the game and mounting the disks as instructed.. also, make sure, and absolutely sure, that _nothing_ is accessing any of the game files outside of the game (and DOSbox).. This includes virus scanners, and is especially important when loading/saving games--While hacking the save files, I've discovered that if anything outside of DOSBox and the game has any file open, including a virus scanner while it's scanning the files, it often causes Fragile to have major fits and die a horribly dramatic death.

Note that I have not yet installed or tested the abandonia archive, only verified that the file exists in the archive. My local installation of the game is from an ISO image I made of my original game CD. I'll be installing the Abandonia version sometime next week, and I'll post tutorials and help afterwards, as well as any other findings and differences which may help people with problems..

I have had FA for a long time, I got it in a jewel case offering. I pulled the pdf off of the cd. hope it works with your acrobat version

The rar is 3mb so I can't upload it. Admin can email me for it if they want.

I have two problems with the game. Sound don't work (remember this is a cd, not a rip). And I would like to turn off all of the useless opening screens.

Wrong virtual C:\ mount for Win7 64
Read and apply:
http://www.abandonia.com/vbullet/showthread.php?t=22241
This will avoid you lots of read/write related problems.
Win7 is very protective about what your programs do on the C: drive.

Also under Vista ànd Win7 you really should use a CD image with imgmount directly in dosbox, not your real CD drive.
Can be an ISO or a BIN/CUE for mixed CDs.

.... also, make sure, and absolutely sure, that _nothing_ is accessing any of the game files outside of the game (and DOSbox).. No, really not, no.
See above, when your mountings are correct you won't have that.

Hi I've read all the previous posts to this thread and am still having the same problem and think it could be something to do with my pc now but will give it a shot here first if anyone can help.
I run the game as normal but I keep getting the insert cd message. Problem is that I DO actually have the disk for this and am still getting the message. The only time I can run this game is through DOSBOX not windows. I have XP.

I've tried everything and am considering consigning the disc to the trash can if you guy can't help!

The Fifth Horseman

Dump an image of the disc to your hard drive and use the DOSBox command IMGMOUNT to mount it. This can sometimes work around issues with mounting discs in real optical drives.

Much apologies for necroing this thread, also for not registering. I'm only likely to post this one question though so...

I'd downloaded this game from another source a few years ago (used to play K240 on amiga when I was a kid). Anyway the problem is this, certain animations have been removed from my build of the game, when the game goes to display a few particular building animations the game will crash out with the message "Video file format wrong"

I'm wondering if someone will be able to tell me how I go about disabling animations altogether, I'd much prefer a still picture rather than a CTD

I'm on an extremely limited download allowance per month, so I'd prefer not to have to download the entire game, I just need a quick n dirty fix for this annoying problem.

Please help, I need the challenge of multiple alien races, K240 is too easy for me these days :D

Open config.ini in the main folder and add:

If you want to play the game in DOSBox, you'll need to mount the game folder as CD to trick the game into thinking the original CD is in the drive. To do this, type the following after you have already mounted a C drive:
mount d: x:\pathtogame -t cdrom

Try this:
mount c c:\dosbox
mount d c:\dosbox\frag -t cdrom
c:
cd frag
fa.bat

BTW, disk space is not the same thing as memory.

Hi Guys
Can You please help Me how can I run the game with the Original CD? I have Windows 7 installed and here is what I did and failed :
1- First created a folder named "game" on my E drive which is going to work as my Hardware C drive
2- Installed the game with the CD through my G Drive (G is the name of my CD Rom drive) with these command in Dosbox :

mount D G:\ -t cdrom
D:
INSTALL

3- I need to note that it is kind of froze during installation and I had to close the window. But anyway ,I decided to run the game to see if it works ->
4-tried to run the game with these commands :

mount D G:\ -t cdrom (to let the Dosbox use the original CD I have in my Drive)
mount C E:\game
C:
cd FRAGILE
FRAGILE

here ,the game runs ,However when I want to start a game from the menu ,a message pops up and says I need to put the CD in the drive ?! What should I do to run the game?

Also can you help me ,How can set the game to run fullscreen and not in Window mode?

Thanks in advance for help

Can You please help Me how can I run the game with the Original CD? I have Windows 7 installed and here is what I did and failed :.....
I know for a fact that the game runs fine, original CD version.
Scratched CD?
First try to create a CD image
http://www.imgburn.com/
If works, use imgmount, mount as D:\ and try again to install IN dosbox.

If fails again, try this no CD solution:
http://www.dosbox.com/comp_list.php?showID=236&letter=F

If it still fails, now yeah, shit happens, you're screwed -maybe- .

Hi guys ;
Alright ,I wasn't successful in running the game from the disk ,So I Copy/Pasted the CD's files on my Hard and then Installed the game. and fortunately It worked this time :)

However ,I have a new problem this time. When I go on my Asteroid close up view and click on some of the other menus like "Construction menu" ,It jumps out of the game sends this Msg :

ERROR: Whilst opening "_MA\MA" : No such file or directory

But I checked both the files in CD (Actually CD folder) and the Games folder ,and I "_MA\_MA" is there ! So what's the problem? How should I solve this? I never had any problem with this game when I could run it on older systems :(

Hey guys! I was also trying to get Fragile to work on a older G4 PPC with osx 10.5.8. I downloaded DOSBOX and I currently have it (unpacked folder) in Applications. The game folder "fragile" is in /Users/Atli/DOSGAMES/.
I tried the previously mentioned indications of mounting and I managed to mount the game. When I have to launch the game however, I just can't do it... I know I'm doing something wrong with the drives... it is confusing for me because I have never used a Mac before and now I have it as a temporary replacement (borrowed).
Another thing to note is that the only drive I see on this Mac is named "æ" (if this helps in any way).

erm... help? :D

Ok I managed to start it using Boxer running st.exe from the list of .exe's, but when I click "New Game" it asks for a CD.
It also manages to run very badly, stutters a lot. To make it even more interesting, when it stutters for too long and becomes non-responsive it gives me this error: "DOS/4GW Professional Error (2002): transfer stack overflow on interrupt 08h at 18:00000FE9 - bla bla bla"
Hope this helps.

Hello all.

I have recently downloaded dosbox from dosbox.com to play Fragile Allegiance (downloaded from your site). I am running .74 on OS X 10.6.8.

Although I have had it running briefly a couple of times successfully, it now claims that I do not have enough memory to play! As you know, the config files are defaulted at 16mb, which is the game's minimum requirement. I have tried increasing this value with no luck, I have also tried running the game both with and without auto mount commands in the config files. I have also tried reinstalling/downloading both dosbox and fragile allegiance with only my first attempt at running the game afterwards being successful.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

That won't help any, since you'd still have to run the game somehow and you would not be able to change the configuration or save your progress.
