Playing this game reminded me of a game called 'mob rule' which is the sequel of constructor, published in 1999. (constructor was a game from 1997)

Nice game. BUT... Everytime I try to build something I get mega lag and only get a screen refresh every 8 days so it becomes extremely hard to place buildings and I lose. :( Any ides why this happens and any way to stop it would be really useful, it seems like a good game.

Hehe, I have this games omewere on CD :). Haven'(t really played it a lot, as the review sais, it gets broing after a wile but it's fun while it lasts :D.

And canno, you have to build a gadget shop (I think) there you can make trees and then place them in the gardens :)

Actually I do use Firefox. I've downloaded 80meg files from the site without a hitch. This one is giving me grief. The real problem is the download system doesn't allow resuming =( although there might be a way to trick it. Resuming would be a handy feature particularly on the larger files like this.

I'll try some more and see exactly how many times I need to retry.

Fixed..... Just start the download. Then right click on the file in your download manager (Firefox or Mozilla) whilst it's downloading and click on properties. Select all (file location) and plug into your favourite download manager.

I should have known as I use this method elswhere.

I have the exact same problem. When I try to lay the foundation to the Wood Yard ( the first building) I get immense lag and very few screen refreshes.
I play this game in DosBox and the sound and everything works well. Just I cannot build

1. Go into your C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.63\dosbox.conf

2. Look for the following:

[cpu]
# core -- CPU Core used in emulation: simple,normal,full,dynamic.
# cycles -- Amount of instructions dosbox tries to emulate each millisecond.
# Setting this higher than your machine can handle is bad!
# cycleup -- Amount of cycles to increase/decrease with keycombo.
# cycledown Setting it lower than 100 will be a percentage.

core=normal
cycles=3000
cycleup=500
cycledown=20

3. Change cycles to 10000 like I did.

4. Play now or keep reading to see some more tweaks I've done......

5. Noone enjoys playing in a box, even if that is what its called

6. Bump DOSbox's allocated memory from 16MB to the max of 63MB

memsize=16

becomes

right, in order to play this game here is what you do

download the game

download dosbox

unzip constructor to a folder of your choice

open up dosbox and type the following

"mount c "game folder here""

then just type in C: then press enter then type game

and then you are in.

Okay, i have Constructor now so no need to split the archive, i managed to download it on a fast connection ( a remote shell i have access to) then download it via ftp (with resume) from there :)

The game is running fine for me so far, i'm on 98SE, no sound though but i appear to be able to build all the buildings, though animations are turned off

Right, to make the next level tenents you need a set of tenants 1 level below, or the current highest. So if you want level 2 tenants you need level 1 tenants and a gadget factory.

1) Make a computer at the gadget factory

2) Get your level 1 tenants to collect the computer

3) You know where you choose wether they make level 1 tenants, make workers or pay rent, a new icon should appear that says make level 2 tenants.

Once you have moved in some level 2 tenants into a level 2 house they can make more level 2 tenants or (with a computer) some level 3 tenants!

Any other questions about how to play the game you can ask me.

Also each level has a special;

Level 1: make workers

Level 2: make cops to rent at police station

level 3: make bribes for the mob

level 4: cant actually remeber, sorry!

level 5: Make design for super houses.

If you get your workers to re-design the rooms n houses then stuff like, longer life for tenants happens, or faster babies, or generally more happy which means you can increase their rent.

To run the sound go into the directory where constructor is and run the .BAT file called setsound. Do not use auto detect every time I used it my coputer locked up. Pick your digital audio device and music device. Sound Blaster ones work best usually. Test it if it does not work try another till it does. :angel: I had the same problem and I used Sound Blaster Pro to get it working. :max:

Hi All,

Its such a shame that you are all struggling to get this game to work as the game is very entertaining and was so innovative for its time (and in my opinion still is!). but you really do need the full game to really appreciate it as this version is a condensed ripped version (very few animation files which are causing the game to crash), the full version is around 400MB.

The last PC I was successfully able to run this game on was a AMD K6 233 with a 4MB S3 Virge video card with a 3DFX accelerator card. Then I bought a Geforce 256 based card and all my problems began...

I managed to find a universal UNIVIBE driver but it still wouldn't work; I won't bore you with the many hours I've put in trying to run this game over the past few years but I highly recommend downloading Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 as this is the only platform that I have tested that has run the game flawlessly and without any problems and was so simple to set up.

I can't remember if TCP/IP connectivity was implemented into Constructor. I believe it was. I will check and post back for the people who are interested. I would love to play people at this game so give me a shout if you think you 'ard enuff.

Why there is no multiplayer??? I thought it HAD a multiplayer option...... Damn... I hope that Acclaim will make a WinXP compatible re-release of Constructor with multiplayer option... It would be such fun for hours trying to destroy your mate's HQ... And for those who did not know, there is an easy way how to win the computer (at least on Playstation), at the very beginnig of the game, simply put a worker in theit woodyard building site and their development will stop... Just remember to keep an eye on the site, because it will burn and explode after some time.

The best way to play this game is to spend some $30 (dont be greedy!) and buy an old computer.. I did it... I have a Pentium 2 230 Mhz with 64 MB ram, Ati 3D Rage II +DVD and Sound Blaster Live and it works with no lags... Though I can't play the animations, because the files are simply missing... If there is anyway to play this game for at least 2 players, tell me.. Because if that is true, my friend will also take an old computer and we will play 1vs1.. That could be such fun for hours!!! Has anyone done this?? What are the differences between a multiplayer and single player? I guess, there is no speed-time in multiplayer... And what about the sub-missions? Like, building a park in a particular estate.

Hi i have the same problem as earlier posts stats.

When I play the game there is no problem, until I want to build a construction yard.
First I had problems with a brick factory, when I choice this the game would to into a real slow-motion thing…… but the I solved the problem by saving the game before I wantet to build the brick factory and the restart the game from bosbox and build the factory first off..

But that little trick did not work when I had to build a steel factory….. pretty much stuck there

Hi, I've managed to get the game working. Whilst playing the game, I get a mission from the council telling me to "get rid of" an occupant of the opponent's estate. I've tried sending every villian I have to get rid of him, but nothing happens and the time limit runs out and I have to start all over again!!!

Geeze, most people that post in this forum are total IDIOTS/N00bs.

- If you have problems trying to run DOSBOX, RTFM! Its made for noobs.

- If your factory lags and the game freezes, read page [4] of this forum how to fine tune your dox box config.

- I've noticed this version doesn't support multiplayer. The original had multiplayer it was very unstable, i gues thats why its removed.

Now for my problem.

After 3-4 mins in the game. It just bombs back into command promt of DOSBOX, with no error message or anything. Can someone please assist.

Hi Everybody! Greetings from Argentina. :ok:
Ive tried every possible way to make this game work properly. DosBOX isn't a good option as it freezes sooner or later (in my particular case when I try to build a cement factory). I followed the advice of some people in this forum and tried with Virtual Pc from Micro$oft. The game works flawlessly. It was quite complicated to make things work, but I learned how to do it and I'll explain it briefly:

You will need:

Virtual Pc
you can download a demo from:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/default.mspx
Or buy it or get it somewhere else

Dos Virtual Machine Additions

You can use the Constructor version from this page (I copied the videos from my old cd so I could see them, the cd didn't work)

And the OS I use is FreeDOS
http://www.freedos.org/
I've downloaded the Beta9 cd iso version

You can also use MsDos but I had problems installing it so I turned to FreeDOS
Im going to try with Windows 95 and the patch for constructor


Well, You should read the help file for using Virtual Machine (it isn't very hard) and create a Virtual disk in which you are going to insall the OS. Then, once you've done this, you should install the Dos Virtual Machine Additions. With this you will be able to share your physical computer folders with the virtual environment. In this case, you share the folder where Constructor is installed. Then, from the virtual PC you enter the folder and run the game.

I'd like to add that as far as I know this is the best way to run any Dos game because it doesn't eat your computer recourses as DosBOX does. Take into account that FreeDOS is compatible with most DOS programs, but not all.

Hello there people. I've recently picked up this game again. I'm using the stuff I got on Abandonia and well I even used the tips on how to accelerate it and make it atleast possible to build a Wood factory, but apperantly it still crashes whenever I try to build an Cement factory. :blink:

If you're on dosbox and the game folder's named "constructor" then you should have to type "cd constr~1"

Go to Game Settings and set Display All Video Animations to No.

For fullscreen, use Alt-Enter.

There is a Win95 patch, but unfortunately it works only with the CD version, which isn't hosted on Abandonia. Anyway, no chance to get it running in XP. Constructor was rather unstable even in it's original version on a decent PC the time it was released.

Hey for everyone who is having problem's whit this awsome game, try Street Wars (Constructor 2), I'm having no problems running it whit XP, work's perfectly well BUT (always a but...) you need to make some missions (that suck's)... but it is just like Constructor... I download from e-donkey, and i also download constructor, but it dosn't let me install it, sais that need Windows 95 jaja...

By the way, you can put Constructor 2 in the page, because the bussiness that make the game is no longer exist, i meen, it is in banckrout (o como carajo se escriba ajjaja)

I played Mob Rule (Street Wars), but I don't like games which only have a campaign mode and nothing else. I love skirmish-like modes, where I get all the freedom I want. By the way, I think Mob Rule isn't abandonware yet, so you better not suggest illegal ways to get it.

Make sure you have Video Animations (or something similiar) disabled in the Options.

Balacay, if I remeber corectly, you have to bulild homes, and have people move in, am get the bedroom to level 5 if possible. They'll have kids- wich turn into workers that can be recruited from your HQ. The trees can only be planted on green terrain, if I am not mistaking! You have a "plant" option; with it you can place not only trees, but also ponds , dog kennels etc. One you have selecte the spot, a pole will appear in that place and somebody ( a foreman? ) will come and actually place the object on the spot when you will have it on stock in your gadget factory.

OK, GUYS!! I have XP and I'me managed to get it runnin by doing the following: I got the lastest version of doxbox, and D-fend. I've done some settings, it now appers to work, but it starts to move incredibly slow (read this: "almost stops") when I clik on the build button, and select the lumber yard. this sux!! All the settings in the "setup" that you must make using the D-fend (wich just makes it easyer, and with a user-frienly interface to use DBox) have "sumpthin' " to do with yer computer's configuration. But dun know exaclty how, or wich one goes where. Has anyone used D-fend with the dosbox before?? I think any one else with XP and such problems should post here, by the way, maybe we can work it out toghther.

Iirc, you need a gadget shop. You build them there, then place them with the Tree button on the sidebar.

Actually they do give you that sort of requests. It just takes longer than with punks.

Hey Guys! I`ve found the CD Image file! Go to www.isohunt.com and search for Constructor. You will need BitComet to download the file. The file is an .mdf file so you will need Magic ISO to burn it on a CD. But once you've done it, you will be able to burn a nice, full version of original Constructor. For best performance use old graphics cards, old Sound Blaster cards and offocurse Win95/98. Sounds funny, but that's the way it is. For those who have used BitComet before, don't worry, I will be seeding this file, so you know that there will be at least one seeder!

Hey, Constructor is such an old game and there are no copyrights anymore. Nobody owns it. So it is legal. Besides, even if I wanted to do it nice and purely clean, I couldn't. Can you tell me a place, where to buy the Constructor CD? I'd really buy it, but noone sells it.

Well... it took a while, but I fixed it. Have you installed your "D-fend" in the DosBox Directory as it says there?
Once you' ve done that, a window should appear on screen when you run d-fend. You then clik on the add profile icon on the left of the toolbar in the upper part of the window.

You than must browse just like when creating a shortcut, and select the .exe file of the old game you want to run. And the set up file. Then, it's just a matter of "screwing" around with those settings. They must sumhow be according to your computer's configuration.. or al least sumthing close. The memory setings are the most difficult to get right. THis old games don't have enough memory availble to run, beacause of the way too many drivers and prograns, and whatever that a computer constantly runs when operating nowadays (plugins, graphixboards, dunno -kinda lost touch with the hardware/computer world in the last years). Leave a e-mail, or mail me @ the adress in my profile, and I cam probably tell you more.

Yaay! :) I've got 2 computers with Win98 SE installed on both of them and the full version of Constructor too (400 MB). In order to play multiplayer you must set up an IPX connection protocol, TCP/IP will NOT work! I connected the two computers via crossed-ethernet cable. Works fine! :) IPX is stable, but only in LAN. You can't play through internet. LAN is fine for me! :) It is really challanging to compete against each other (human players), much MUCH more fun than playing against a computer enemy.. Besides, computer enemies CHEAT!!! They can build houses even if wood yard is not built. And they have unlimited money, because you can steal from them forever. Which means they don't have to worry about the rent and they can make tenants to make babies only. And they never upgrade rooms, they don't need it.

Hi, OK, so I downloaded Constructor. I read all the forums and ended up downloading DOSBox, learning how to use it, then it was too slow, so I downloaded D-Fend, which took away the slow-ness NOW all I have left are complete disabling of movies. Everyone here is saying goto options in the game and disable the animations yet the options in the game only let you disable them alittle bit. So, does anyone here know how to disable all animations COMPLETELY? I'm assuming one would have to go into the files wich ==complicated stuff yet I'm pretty good at figuring out by trial and error. Please help, I've done my part by learning about cpu cycles, dosbox, and D-fend. Thank you so much :cheers:

you mind telling the world what you did to make it work? im looking at the exact same problem, and no matter what tweaking i do (using d-fend, anything else is silly) it will not go away...

Well, that's pretty much the basic idea... nothing to "strangeorous" regarding the settings... 1 or 2 frameskips, cpu core- normal, no doublebuffering and other stuff like that. Just try to set it rather like you'd like your computer to be
(or like most of them were in the days when these games were new) than trying to make the settings as close as possible to your "super-machine"

ok ... i install it , create a virtual disk with MS-DOS...
than i try to install FreeDOS, create a FAT32 partition...
now i reset the "system" and try to boot from hd, but it appears "partition signature != 55AA"... the only way to use FreeDOS is on safe mode, but i can't do nothing in safe mode... :ranting:

My two cents:

After owning it on CD years ago I downloaded this last night from here, and I LOVE it. I already have my PC setup to dual boot when I start it up. I can choose XP (which I use for the internet, music, work, etc) or ME (where I have my older games which don't run that great under XP,) and have my hard drive split into two seprate drives, one for each OS.

So, I moved the zipfile to my ME drive. Went into ME. Unzipped it with the standard "Extract to..." command from the right-click menu. Put the unzipped files into a folder called CN (like the old original game used to go into.)

Open MS-DOS Prompt from ME (not DOSBox or Virtual PC or anything like that) and expand it to full screen, and type:

C:\> cd\CN

C:\CN> game

Of course I ran SETSOUND.BAT first and chose appropriate sound drivers, and it runs absolutely flawlessly. Just in an MS-DOS shell under Windows Me. I think the problems most are having are to do with Windows XP.

Maybe you could try that...?

If you experience lag problems using dosbox, which i did, you can speed up the fps using ctrl+F12, you'll see on the title bar of dosbox how quick you made it, 12000 works well, and i use crtl+8 for frameskip and set that to 3.. goodluck!

Whenever I get those assignements, I am not able to make it since I dont have sufficient bad guys. I remember the mob housr can send a mafia guy over there to backstab them, but I never get to the point where it is possible :)

Absolutely have to use DOSBOX.. you can get it from abandonia...

Problems using dosbox? You need to mount the folder containing constructor..
---Type "help" and dosbox will show you how to mount the folder so you can access it.

If you experience lag problems in dosbox (e.g. jump 8 days or whatever) use crtl+F12 until the emulate speed is at 12000.. later in the game you might have to speed the emulation up more.

Also, if you are new to this kind of stuff, you might consider using D-Fend, a frontent utility that allows you to create different sets of configs for your games.

Hi, I don't have a scanner but I have been thinking about either taking photos of my manual or simply writing it up (started a while ago already at 10,000 words) and placing the correct images in. If I can't get good quality photos then I will continue writing this manual but I can't say when that would be done the manual is hard to get perfect and it even has spelling mistakes (very foolish ones at that) so as to make Acclaim look better I have corrected them. ^_^ For example they wrote "many" instead of money, they really should have proof read it properly.

When YOU toggle the auto-repair on a repair man, you must also make him walk to any of the buildings on the esatate of your choice. The repairman will then automaticly go around that estate and fix buildings around. It' not enough to just select auto-repair. Have you tried that?

@all the others that have posted on this thred page: the answers to your questions are in this thread. Take a bit of time and go through it. You'll find a lot of usefull info.

Do you people READ sometime? This is an old game and does NOT run in XP. In fact there are only two ways running this game. It is either DOSbox on a WinXP machine or a Win98 on old hardware. The second option is better ofcourse. And Abandonia: you DON'T have the full version here. Full version is like over 300 MB. I have the full version, old hardware, Windows 98SE and I can play multiplayer (LAN only though) with NO faults! God damn people, if you really want to play this game, go get the hardware and the full version!

I got mine via BitComet because I simply couldn't find it anywhere on sale. And because Acclaim is dead, I think it is OK to do so. What's your opinion?

If Acclaim is dead indeed, :whistling: as long as there aren't any webpages pointing you how to pay for buying this game (online - ofcourse), I don't think there's a problem with that. But just try not to share it anyway - just in case. Get it just for personal use.

@Olaf. Post here a list of the settings you have made for constructor. (Everthing, like did you tick the "behave inteligently" box, or the "use XMS" or "game need loadfix" box, stuff like that. Maybe I can give you some advice...

Ahaaaaaaaaaaah. I thout this message occured to you (becasue it happend to me too) BEFORE starting the game. Well that has nothing to do with the dosbox or your sistem. Let me explain:

If you've been playing the game for only 1h 30 mins, you probably get sacked for some reason: debt at the bank, land usage of your estates (not enough), to many black marks you get from unsatisfied tenants, failure to fullfill a task given by the city council (dunno wich of these, but I'm quite sure it is one of them). Well, when you get sacked, a movie is played (like some sort of an "outro"). And the game ends, anyway. Because the abandonia version is not 100% complete (missing movie filex and probably other not so important crap fo the game)... there you have it.
Just start a new game try to go with it. Let us now if it works. :cheers:

I'm really thankful. I have the CD and since I upgraded to win XP i haven't been able to play this game. I downloaded this constructor.zip and just copied the game.exe to the previos installed (full instalation) dir ,opened it on dosbox and changed de cycles to 10000 and it worked really good. With vids and all languages and everything. I just completed the first mission now. :brain: I've never done this before.
