Hi There. Great site! Love the good old games available here. There is one game that I cant remember the title of but was hoping it might become available. Basically, you are the captain of a starship that you select the crew for (you can pick different races for each position each with their own strengths and weaknesses) and you can upgrade your ship with better armor, shields, engines, etc. You need to go from planet to planet (i believe the game even included a fold out map of the galaxy) and collect minerals, alien creatures, etc. and trade them for cash, which you can then use to upgrade the ship or train the crew. I remember the you had to put the ship in "standard orbit" and have the science officer scan the planet for what goods it contained and then you selected where on the planet you wanted to land. You could take out a little buggy armed with a laser and a stun gun to deal with any creatures you could find. I really wish I could remember the name of the game and I hope one of you can. I think it was out somewhere between 89-91. Thanks alot!

Remotely reminiscent of Wing Commander Privateer...but you couldn't choose your crew or go for a burn on a buggy.

Its definitely not starcontrol. And it sounds like the same game spoken about in "this game needs a name" to me as well. I have posted some replies there too.

No, I don't think it's Star Control 2 -- sounds very similar, but you can't pick a crew with strengths and weaknesses in Star Control 2. And since he pointed that out specifically, I'd assume it's a similar game but not the same.

Could be he was refering to chosing which ships you take onboard the mothership. They each have different abilities and need to be crewed as well.
If you look at it that way you get a 100% match to Star Control 2 (which just happen to be my alltime favourite game :kosta: ).

Starflight 1 and 2. Excellent games, both.

Hello folks,

im looking for a game i played when i was young :)

its kind of a space exploration game with about 800 planets to explore (NOT elite) and a genious story about every sun in the galaxy becoming supernove from the right side to the left side of the galaxy.

the hero, his ship and the crew had to find out what starts the novae (they where not naturally) and the solution where a crystalline lifeform that tried to save themselfe because mankind used the crystalline lifeform as fuel.

there was a part 2 of this game with an almost better story...

this game was ingeniuos 15-20 years ago... delivered on 1 or 2 diskettes... 800 planetsurfaces to explore (i think they described the landscape with some fractal formulas), upgradeable spacesships, different races, wars and so on...

the game was CGA graphics and was available on pc and apple

bye,

glen

It's surprising that nobody has tried to do a modern remake of either title. :(

Actually, people are trying, like for example those at http://www.starflight3.net/

However, it seems that and the others I came across are not going to be completed soon, if at all.

I should have been clearer. I meant, it's astonishing no commercial developers have jumped on the idea of a new Starflight title. But then, I also feel that way about Star Control, Quest for Glory, Darklands, and even Hyperspeed (an excellent Microprose title which did poorly for lack of advanced promotion). I would think the guys at Toys for Bob or the Coles would have difficulty in lining up development support, but clearly they do.

-Back to the matter at hand. Unfortunately, the likelihood of a Starflight 3 is small. The new development team, an avocational one, is pragmatic:

"Since we're doing this in our spare time we don't know when completion will be. People join and people leave all the time, sometimes not getting anything done for us and sometimes not submitting what they have done, resulting in setbacks. This is one of the negatives of an internet-based fan project and everyone will just have to be patient. When the game is close to completion and release, believe us, you'll know."

That's well and good, and I wish them the best. But they're still pre-alpha, and they've been at it since 2000, by their own figures; possibly earlier.

Hi there, just found your excellent site, but noticed it doesn't have three of the BEST games of all time:

Starflight
Starflight 2: Trade Routes of the Cloud Nebula
Sentinel Worlds: Future Magic Volume 1

The additions of these would have me donatin' some fundage in no time. ;)

You have some great games on this site. I just thought those two gems should be added as well.

Great. This was the precursor of Star Control II, :w00t: and Star Control 3 basically plagiarized its story from here. :not_ok: There is a Starflight III, only named diferently because it wasn't distributed by the company owning I and II BUT yes it was made by the programmers of I and II, so it's SF3 anyway you see it except for the name. It's called Protostar and is AW and already on the site. :ok:

Im looking for the name of an old game my father and I used to play all of the time. Never finished it, but still it was an awesome game.

The whole concept was your mission was to find a new colony for your civilization. the star of the system your home is at is going nova. you start out with a ship, and can upgrade its shields, weapons, engines, ect.
The exploration part was going through different solar systems, and landing on worlds to find minerals to gather and take back to get more upgrades. you could also find scraps of logs from other races. ruins native life forms, ect.
the copy protection from the game was cool. if you had a pirated version of the game, the intergalactic police came after you and tried to destroy your ship. you could beat them, but it was a major pain in the but to repair all the damage caused by them.

I know there was a sequel to the game many years later. I never played it. If anyone can give me any clues, i would appreciate it.

Just in case it's not one of the SC games... Was the game about exploration with a single ship only, or also about founding colonies and expanding an empire?

Doink

It does sound like Starcontrol 2 but the copy protections different so it mite be something else. one of Sid Meiers games maybe?

Solcutter

I know it isnt star control.

You play with 1 ship. not really founding colonies.

most of what i remember in the game was going around space, dodging aliens who want to kill you, and when it came to exploring planets, you had to be careful which ones you chose to go to. there was a animation sequence when you landed the ship on the planet from the POV of the main screen on the bridge. if you touched down on a planet that was too large, the gravity crushed the ship and it was game over. after that you went out on a little rover and explored the planet.

Maybe Sentinel Worlds (http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/sentinel-worlds-i-future-magic/screenshots)?

Though according to MobyGames it doesn't have a copyprotection but a booklet with paragraphs to read (like Wasteland). So I guess it's not the game you're looking for... :(

And Hard Nova (http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/hard-nova/screenshots) probably is a bit too combat-rpgish I guess?

Starflight (http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/starflight/screenshots) maybe? At least it had a sequel...
