After long time using only the keyboard and mouse i am planning to buy a joystick/gamepad/controller (whatever the name is nowadays*^_^*^_^),

to be able to play games like the ones here at abandonia and also games like this (http://www.telefragged.com/thefatal/ava/index.php?content=inc_media.htm)(Avalanche) on my pc.

Any suggestion? what are the details i should look for? I have a pc, intel core 2 duo, 2gb of ram... and windows xp sp2 running.

money is not a problem but I am not looking for the fanciest of all. I am looking rather for something usefull and compatible with almost any game.

thanks:)

I've not been looking at joysticks lately. But I think you just need to browse around to find one you like. Some console joysticks can be connected to a PC via a USB adapter. This is good for someone like me who plays the PS2/3 a lot and is very used to the controls.

That's not the question... (And those details mean s**t for joysticks)

The question is: USB OR Game Port. :)

Erm ... I haven't seen a joystick port on new computers in years, unless it came on an add-in sound card. I think it's safe to assume USB in this case.

Some months ago I bought a Logitech Attack3 USB (yes, I'm a cheapass).
Plug in on XP or Vista(32 and 64) and it works with every game that supports a joystick.
Works also fine in dosbox.
Even works fine in Linux+dosbox.

Needs to be installed in W98SE. :/ but works.

Problem: too much buttons.
DAMN I HATE ALL THOSE BUTTONS.
Is it so much asking to have an USB joystick -(and cheap please)- that only has TWO buttons?

In fact I was shopping for a old model for gameport to stick in my ol'P1 as all my ol'joysticks are worn out, but those seems not findable anymore around here.

I HATE MODERN TIMES.
And I hate you all.

You crack me up! :amused:

I know what you mean about the joysticks these days. You can't find a good joystick that has any surface not covered by buttons. I've only had a couple of PC joysticks throughout my life, and never really used them. I got used to driving, fighting and flying with the keyboard and got pretty good with it, too.

So i Think the right start is to look for USB ones.:)
then any brand in special or is it all almost the same? which one is easy to install and run?

So, I did a little search and found this which was what i was having in my mind
I found these two logitech ones (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/gaming/pc_gaming/gamepads/&cl=us,en&page=&view=game_comparison&compProducts=292,264,288,301) being very popular and easy to "plug and play" (both are on USB port)
any other popular brand? or recomendation?

If I am planning to buy a pair is it easy to set the recognition of two gamepads for two players? stupid question?

I think he means that Windows 2000/XP natively support the joystick, while Windows 98 requires you to install the driver manually.

I'm playing Hind (http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/497/HIND+-+The+Russian+Combat+Helicopter+Simulation.html) a lot lately, I plan to beat it. I could even look for other flight sim after that. I plan to turn into a flight sim freak until I find something else. :P

I have a plug'nplay USB Genius MaxFighter F-16U. It was 8€. It has four buttons and a throttle wheel, which is a good thing since I can use joystick2mouse (http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/Joystick-2-Mouse.shtml) to map the extra two buttons to expel chaff and flares.

I previously had a Logitech Wingman Light, and it lasted for years and is still in perfect working order, but it went into the joystick port of the old computer's sound card, so I couldn't plug it in the new one.

I also bought a Logitech Precision gamepad to play arcade games, but that's a completely different game from analog joysticks. Actually there are many arcade games that need analog control, and a flight sim joystick does a very good job, even for the car racing ones or whatever.

EDIT: The throttle wheel is useless by the way. Unless someone told me about other program that let me re-map it to the tail rotor pedals, I'd be grateful. http://www.abandonia.com/vbullet/images/icons/icon14.gif

Thanks a lot japofran, your feedback narrows my choice to one gamepad:
the logitech dual action 2
that one will be then :)
not too costly and has wheel and analog options.
thanks a lot to all

If you loved it so much, why didn't you marry it? :bleh:

Yes indeed, new ones with a zillion worthless buttons allover the thing.
That way I could plug old ones with only TWO buttons in a modern PC .

Me likes the idea.

Agreed, but the point is that JapoFran has a joystick that he likes, but is unable to use. That solution would allow him to use THAT joystick.

I just said it was in perfect working order, nothing about love. :P The new joystick is as good as the old one, and then better, and it cost nearly no money.

I do have a parallel-USB adapter for the old printer, but in the joystick's case it wasn't worth it.

Gamepad?
