MSCDEX was the old driver used for accessing CD-ROM drives. Perhaps you need to mount a particular directory as a CD-ROM in DOSBox rather than a normal hard drive directory?

well the real problem is when i install the litil divil game in the directory that the game specified i run the game.bat but he pop up the message that i said MSCDEX .
can i solve this problem mounting the directory of the instalation as a CDROM in the dosbox ?..

Why would you install the game in the first place? Isn't that a game you downloaded from this site?

yes but it hass to be installed or extracted form the pure dos or DOs box ...
look the game in the page and see for yourself ... if you please ..
and run it to see if you can play it because im trying that for about 2 weeks and nothing !!!!! :ok:

I installed it and ran into the same problem than you. However, this is obviously a cracked version, and probably an old one. I was used to see installation screens like this when I was young (yes, I dealed with "warez" myself back in the BBS days... :whistle:). This mean that the quality of the rip is questionable. When you encounter such a rip, it usually works or it doesn't, and they sure don't care about compatibility issues.

Only one file have remotely usefull informations. It's FILE_ID.NFO, and you must open it with notepad. .NFO files seems to be something Windows recognise as some kind of "MS Info document", but .NFO files are simple .txt files that hackers used to use back in the days.

The quote make it a little dodgy, but if you open it yourself in notepad you'll notice it's ANSI graphics and very well done at that.

Legacy is the name of the group which supplied this game originally. Brutus is the screen name of the one who did the messager job, they did not mention who actually cracked the game. It is mentioned that it is a "Release: PC CD-Rom", which mean that they cracked the CD. My best bet would be, since it was usual at that time, they copied the CD game files and created a workaround so your computer (or the install program) would think that the source files are from a CD-rom when it fact they are in the directory of the install.exe. I installed the game myself with no problem, so it's not the faulty part.

Point #1 is about installing the game. Done that, works fine.
Point #2 is about using setup to be able to play the game. Done that, works fine.
Point #3 is about a file named DIVIL.BAT. There is no such file in either directory.

There is probably a file missing here, or many. Many would be more possible.

Back in the days, I used to run on my old 486 a lot of games (such as C&C) which required a CD-Rom to install and play the game with. However, I had no such CD-Rom on my computer but still managed to play those cracked game fully and "without" problems. The workaround for this was to get a program for DOS which was "emulating" the CD-Rom drive so the computer actually "thought" there was a CD-Rom drive installed. In fact, it was working pretty much like DOSBox, meaning you had to "mount" a directory with the original CD source files and the program was re-routing all the CD-Rom access to the directory.

In resume:

This game crack either miss a file or there is some DOS compatibility issues and Windows can't or doesn't have access to MSCDEX. MSCDEX seems to be needed for the true game to access his CD.

What you need is to find a workaround for this so the game think either MSCDEX is loaded or the game have direct access to his CD files. I have no idea for the first option, but you might be able to do something about the second with DOSBox.

I don't think I can supply you with more information. I don't have enough experience in DOSBox CD-rom mounting to be of real use here. Better relay the torch to other members of this board.

for your information, they are still used in warez and some nfo files are totally useless.

In fact, it was working pretty much like DOSBox, meaning you had to "mount" a directory with the original CD source files and the program was re-routing all the CD-Rom access to the directory.
