View Full Version : A Member Cleanup

i have a idea and i wanted to no how evry 1 thought about it

Maybe we should have a non active member cleanup like maybe deleting evry member tht has posted less the 20 times and hasnt posted in a month cause we have alot of usernames and lots of spaces tht some1 might want but isnt available eventhough tht person has nvr posted.

just a thought want to hear suggestions?

I don't think less than 20 times would work. Some people might only post once a month or two months. Should they be removed for that? Also some people might join and then it could be a while before they really get posting!

I see your point though. We do have around 370 members who have never posted.

Titan
15-12-2004, 01:59 AM
And we have several who has done 1 post... like 6 months ago..

BUT... If you are a guest, i'm not shure you can even see the entire forum, and defenetly not post in many topics...

I think its a good idea. If you havent posted in 6 months, you really dont care about abandonia.

Eagle of Fire
15-12-2004, 04:05 AM
Same here. It is a sure thing that by removing all those 0 post wonders some would need to register again, but then if they are really interested in this forum it won't be a big deal for them.

I just can't understand why some people register somewhere if they don't want to post at all.

Wiping all those 0 post users once can't be that bad. Maybe it should be done twice a year, so anyone who never posted and did not post in the past 6 months would get deleted. Everyone who attained a tittle above "newbie spammer" or another higher title, would be exempt of this.

It would be stupid to remove someone with 1000 post after 6 months of innactivity since they already contributed so much to the forum, and might just come back.

Sebatianos
15-12-2004, 06:17 AM
Eagle has a point!
There should be a date set - and twice a year someone should check the members out. There are some who never post. REgister for a question or two - and leave.
But there should be an option for them to take their membership back. Let's say they get a warning in their mail accout saying: Your abandonia mombership has expired. If you wish to stay a member of Abandonia (for free off course) just click on this link.
And there should be a confirmation link. If they forgot about Abandonia, or would like to get active again they can, otherwise :bye:

wormpaul
15-12-2004, 08:26 AM
I think that`s the best solution..

Give them a change to become active again and othwerwise delete the account..

Only 1 problem: We almost got 1000 members....after the delete it will be destroyed to 700 :not_ok:

Kosta
15-12-2004, 09:15 AM
Yeah, I'll see what kind of cleanup options the forum offers! I'll erase anyone who has registered over 2 months ago and hasn't visited since, or anyone who has less than 5 posts and posted over 6 months ago....

wormpaul
15-12-2004, 09:29 AM
Everyone less then 5 posts??

At this point newbies will be kicked also....

Or is it just 5 posts in last 6 months??...then it's ok..

Otherwise it's not fair for the newbies here around :ok:

mouse31e
15-12-2004, 09:57 AM
I think he means if they didn't post at all in the last six months and they also have less than five posts! :D

FreeFreddy
15-12-2004, 11:18 AM
Yes, it's a good idea. I think best would be the ones who registered and didn't post more than 1 post in 1-2 months. And those with 5 or less posts they posted in all the 6 months also wouldn't need their account, it seems.

Deleting members is cool, but we shouldn't be so rigorous. If someone didn't posted in 6 months then he should go. If he posts few times in a year, then I'm not sure. Also, how much time someone has for how many posts. Don't just delete, they are people DAMNIT!!!!!

Sebatations idea for mail is coo. Then again, if someone is not active at all, he won't give a damn abouti it. Still, Idoub that warning mail will hurt :)

So let's sum the most / best sounding ideas so far up.
People that didn't post more than 5-10 posts, and their last post was 6 months ago. They should get an e-mail that will warn them that they'll become deleted.
In that way I think it sounds best. Why not warning those fitting members and delete them in case of lack of caring then?

Yeah, let's send them a warning e-mail!!

1. Because on that way, you will 100% be sure that they are not willing to come back and be active.
2. And because maybe some of them still want to be active, so when they recieve your message, they will come back to site!! :ok:

what's wrong with some accounts that aren't active.
Come on you're talking small numbers here. The site isn't going to be much slower or so because to it.

maybe if people whould double post less and spam less on the forum.... that would help.

Anyway if you do want to remove accounts. I would suggest removing accounts without any posts and older then 3 months. or 6 monts and less then 3 posts.

Well actually I don't like the idea.

Reasons:
1. I don't see the need to delete members it's not like the forum will be faster because of it (well at least not on the posting side) or that we are short of diskspace.

Other Reasons:
2. People will join the site faster if they see a forum with 1000 members rather than a forum that only has 100 members, most of the people figure if a site has a lot of members it must be this site is special somehow...
3. Some people register to benefit from things only registered users have (such as being able to use the view new posts functionality)
4. If we keep deleting members we will never reach 1000 members (which is very close now)

I can write plenty of other reasons but I don't want to bore you to death :)

punch999

mouse31e
15-12-2004, 11:08 PM
The only advantage I can see to deleting a huge number of members would be if they were using usernames that other people wanted but I can't see that happening very often!

I don't think it matters if they're making the forum look bigger than it really is. It will make us look bigger and probably encourage more people who will actually post to join.

Anyone who has ever run their own forum will know that people don't want to join a forum with 5, 10 or 20 members but they are more likely to join one with 100+ members. It's not like we're making it up! They're all legitimate members.

Also, how many times do you see forums with 10,000 members? Quite regularly and I'm sure they don't all post every day!

I agree with Braindead that deleting large number of people is not good idea. I don't care if the forum is gonna look bigger. If our site is good, then people will come. If you want to delete someone then he should really be unactive for a long time. Just deleting like that is totaly rush. It is not something we can't live without (I hope at least). It looks like some sort of inquisition to me.

It's like this:
Admin: Hello dear member. We see that you don't post much lately.

Member: Well hello. Yes, yes, I know. Been real busy lately. Still I manage to come once a while. I really love your site.

A: Offcourse, that's because we're so good. It seems that you are not familiar with our NEW RULES. We only care about people that keep posting.

M: No? What? I.... I didn't.

A: Oh, well, that's too bad. It seems that you are about to be deleted since number of your posts fits deleting criteria.

M: But I posted couple of times. I'm quite busy now. I will post more and I AM VISTING your site all the time.

A: Yes, well, we all regret because we're about to lose you.

M: BUT, BUT, I HONESTLY LOVE YOUR SITE!!!! I WANT TO STAY A MEMBER!!! I WANT TO CONTRIBUTE IN THE FUTURE AND TO MAKE THE SITE LOOK BIGGER!!!! SITE IS GREAT AND WITH ALL OF US IT WILL BE EVEN......

A: Offcourse you do. Sure, sure.... Well, farewell...... (Admin politely smiles)

This has probably been said but 4 pages is too much to go through.

If you do delete members who haven't been active for a couple of months, and then they decide to come back just to see how it is and then they find they have been deleted. They would probably get pretty pissed off. I know I would. :not_ok:

I still don't think it should be done. No one really cares how many members there are. Plus just by reading most of the topics you can see that all the members aren't active. I'm sure this happens in all forums around the world, and I'm sure they are all sane enough not to delete inactive members.

That's not what you need to do, you must do a few reviews and you get the VIP, although in your case I must say, you've been quite helpful at the forum, and you made your self noted. Just write oe review (and suply a game) and you're half way there.
