DOOM not up to par with other shooters of the time??? Ya gotta be kidding me. DOOM had more firsts than I can wave a stick at. Including multiplayer deathmatch, and zillions of graphical firsts.
I'd love to be shown a game before DOOM that was more influencial and has a bigger fan-base and modding community then and today than DOOM.
It was estimated at one point more people had shareware DOOM than Windows. :not_ok:

That review is of Doom 2 though, not Doom. Doom was revolutionary, Doom 2 was kind of more of the same. Heretic was released in 1994 as well, and I think that had much more in-depth gameplay than Doom 2.

I remember seeing doom for the first time running on a computer in some store. I was definitely blown away at the time, that must count for something! Those deathmatches over serial networks were f'in awesome.

When I got Doom 2 - TNT and Plutonia Experiment (addon packs, I guess) quite some time ago now, I played them for really long. I liked the levels, I liked the music and I liked the crazy action in the game. It was like no game I played before. Later I got Doom 1 and Doom 2 also. Doom 1 wasn't that cool, but Doom 2 I liked also alot.
For me Doom is the best game of all times (but not Doom 3, despite it's great graphics).

Nothing happens in the first 5 minutes that could scare someone enough to wet their pants. I think you're friend has a problem.

I like the darkness. It's a great idea. More games should have it. :ok:

At first I hated the darkness in Doom 3 and the constant need to switch flashlight and weapon, but I resisted the temptation to get one of those mods which leaves the flashlight permanently on. Now that I'm further on, I'm glad I did -- there are some moments where it really makes the atmosphere. Running through a dark room and activating some zombies, then climbing a staircase and ducking into a dark corner which you hope is empty so you can see the silhouettes of the enemies as they climb the stairs after you and then gun them down is actually pretty scary stuff. If you could just shine a torch down the stairs while you're shooting it wouldn't have anywhere near the effect.

I know that this will be controversial but I like Doom3 more then I do HL2. I have not finished either game so this is not a full opinion but Doom3 is more honest in my opinion. HL2 tries to hard not to be a FPS and I don't like that. The level design in HL2 is not good either. Too easy to get lost and not know what you are supposed to do or where you are supposed to go.
Graphically Doom3 is also a lot better then HL2. Doom3 is the next generation graphics engine HL2 is the pinacle of the current generation graphics engine. Although I will admit the water effects in HL2 are second to none.

It means half Life 2 has the best looking water I have seen in a computer game. Of course there is no water on Mars (well not liquid anyway) so we do not know how Doom3 would handle it.

This is so true. This is the first time I have actually been scared while playing a game. Except of course Return to Caslte Wolfenstein. Those things with no legs freaked me out, but not as much as this game. And I've only played the first 3 levels of Doom 3.

The first half of Doom is not as good as the rest of the game. You should really try and get the full game. It wont be long before it comes out on budget.

I grew used to the scary-factor of doom 3 after a while. And after that it was just your basic shooter.
I still loved the game. Those messages and little movieclips were brilliant.
And the entire delta-lab part is brilliant, you feel its leading up to something.

I figured the first 3 levels would be nothing compared to the whole thing. I really want to play the rest of the game, but the first 3 levels are better than any other game I have played. Hopefully I can borrow the game off one of my brothers friends.

Doom 2 starting the big craze of multi-player gaming online.
If you did play it in 1994 many played it on BBSs with the awesome Dwango levels :ok:

I played Doom 3 for c.a. 2-3 weeks after it was released, but then I got bored, because it was always the same thing again and again, and uninstalled it, and stashed it away.

I have no cash to play these new games like Doom 3 or HL2. You gotta always upgrade your PC. I don't even have a 3D accelerator anymore. They all broke down because of cooling problems. What a fat pile of muck. Can't even run a game for 48 hours straight.

I agree with you.I'm not the richest person ever and i can't keep paying $150 bucks for a new 3d card with like 2 new features just to run a $60 buck game that turned out to be crap.WHAT A RIP!! :wall: :ranting:
