Today, I bought the most recent issue of a local gaming magazine.

When I came back home, I've popped the cover DVD into my drive and looked at the list of contents.

Fast forward to Trailers.

Fast forward down the list.

And the whole world turned upside down.

Because, you know what happened?

The oldest "still being worked on" piece of vaporware known to Man...

... precisely that! ...

DUKE NUKEM FOREVER (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duke_Nukem_Forever)...

Just got an official trailer with some (apparently) in-game graphics.

Meheh, he's always comes back, always and always, that's apparently all he can do.

BTW, in dec2007 there was a trailer on shacknews:

Many believes it's a joke.
Ah, Nessie in her loch Ness and DNF ... two of a kind.

There was also a nice recent rumour this week at gamespot that was reporting that the game might see the light cough cough in 2008.

http://www.gamespot.com/news/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=26200222&sid=6185670&om_act=convert&om_clk=newstop&tag=newstop;title;15

Turns out that the news was simply a goal set out by Take Two that was misread, by the Dallas Business Journal, at this point the only time I will believe the game will ever come out, is when I go to the store and see it on shelve.

If it will indeed 'come back', then it'll have to be redone basically from scratch. Everything that was shown last time it was previewed is completely and utterly outdated now.

I don't know what to think of it, honestly. I seriously doubt it'll live up to the hype, if it ever sees the light (which I find rather unlikely, too). Also, 2008? I don't think so, unless they've been working on it secretly for years (with an engine that isn't surpassed by Half-Life's).

I say that when Duke Nukem Forever comes out is when the Pope gets laid. In other words NEVER. Its like waiting for Starfox 2 to come out on the Snes system.

Hate to burst your bubble: the man gets laid already.

But yeah DNF will always take FOREVER (how else did you think they came up with the title)...

This game should be called: Duke Nukem NEVER! :P

Well if they ever manage to finally release the title, it probably wouldn't be so different from the story of Daikatana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daikatana)'s development, only that Duke Nukem worked-on-forever would probably be even worse due to numerous rewritings of levels and story. In my opinion those who are working on this game are simply so bored with it that they have troubles to come up with good and / or fresh ideas for it, hence the numerous re-starts.
They would be better advised to dump that piece of software junk into a garbage bin and start something new, at least then that would stop them to be laughed out by everyone.

Hey, the game is not titled Duke Nukem Forever for nothing. :amused:

They DID release prey... so chances exist...

The Fifth Horseman

Incidentally, they started working on Prey at about the same time as on DNF.

I may hope that *IF* DNF ever comes out it will be a lot better than Prey ....

If Duke catch his prey, this will make the development of the game that much longer...

Time needed to cut the prey in meat stacks and everything... :p

You know, if it ever does get released, it will be terrible. No game can live up to this much anticipation.

Especially if it has been rewritten so many times. It might be a fresh idea the first time, but then after all the rewritings it gets chewn over too much.

I never got what the big deal over the delayed production of DNF was. There are a lot of games that spend just as much time in production, and honestly it's not that rare that they turn out great. Team Fortress 2, for a recent example, spent about a decade in production and went through change after change and switched engines etc. and it never became the internet mockery that Duke has been subjected to.

I guess it's fun to rip on it for being so "late", but delayed production is not rare, it's just that you don't usually realize it or read tired jokes about it every other day. Of course DNF is coming out, and quite frankly I'm looking forward to the quirkiness and character and over-the-top fun that has been largely missing from the currently over-saturated shooter market, the same way Duke 3D brought it to the Doom-clone world of shooters in the 90s.

Sorry... I'm just compelled to defend Duke. It's a hard job, but somebody's got to do it.

Its not necessairly the delayed production that has made the game infamous, it was all the hype each year the game was supposedly going to come out that really pushed things over the edge. The claims that it would be even better than Half-Life and that you could do so much more in this type of FPS, then ever before.

Especially after the whole Darkitania fiasco, and how that game turned out, you can totally understand why a lot of gamers have lost hope of this game ever seeing the light of day, much less when a new story comes out about DNF coming out soon!!!

Its pretty much similar to if Axl Rose will ever release Chinese Democracy, its pretty much the same sort of distain and joke in the hard rock communities and pretty much a good majority of those users and buyers all know that after all the hype that has gone through with that album, they know that album will be no where near as a "classic" as the other GNR albums.

I suppose that makes sense, although you have to admit that that ever since they scrapped the 2001 version they've definitely toned down the self-hype and have been very frugal with their announcements and will never really boast, especially not to Daikatana levels of boasting.

I think any current hype tied to it is mostly community-driven and not really a product of 3D Realms. I'd think otherwise if they were going on about revolutionizing first person shooters and how their new game will feature everything from your wildest dreams.. but for years now they seem pretty humble and realistic to me. The attitude seems more like they just want to make a new Duke game that people like, as opposed to blowing everyone's mind and telling the world to "suck it down".

As far it being as good or classic as Duke 3D was for it's time... I dunno... I just wanna save some babes from aliens.. and I'm willing to give it a shot and look at it objectively once it's finished, and separate the product from the hype. I think if people were able to separate reviews and hype and media and message board scrutiny from the games.. then people would find themselves having more fun.

I refuse to believe that this game will ever be released until I'm actually playing it. Considering the number of times we've been told this game is coming, I find it difficult to be anything but skeptical.

Are any of the older duke nukem games abandonware? I only tried a duke nukem game once, and only barely. I'm curious if the older ones are any good.

The Fifth Horseman

They're all sold, but 3D Realms offers shareware versions (limited to one episode) on their site.

Great. I think I'll give those a try.

The DNF trailer from december looks pretty interesting, but the lack of any real gameplay footage concerns me.

The only thing that comes close to DNF is Darkfall for the MMO players out there...

Another fake trailer of the Duke?

No way what they are going to show us, we will simply wait Duke Nukem... forever...

There actually was a recent brew-ha-ha (about a month ago) about DNF release date when Dallas Business Journal (http://www.bizjournals.com/dallas/stories/2008/02/04/daily17.html) did an interview with 3D Realms President Scott Miller and he was misquoted for things he said "off the record". After a day or so of people going out of their minds, it was debunked by George Broussard in the 3D Realms forums (http://forums.3drealms.com/vb/showthread.php?p=654680#post654680) leading to my favorite statement ever:

"I suppose we're used to dealing with gaming press and not mainstream press. Lesson learned."
