Can anyone think of any old real 3d shooters? I would like to work out if quake was the first game to use 3d sprites, and what other games from that time use them.

Any suggestions?

Wolfenstein 3D, Wolfenstein 3D - Spear of Destiny, Doom 1 + Doom 2. The most known.
Also:
Nightmare 3D,
Rise of the Triad,
Ken's Labyrinth (not that well known one),
Blake Stone - Aliens of Gold (good one, was almost competitior to Doom)
---------------
Heretic
Hexen
Hexen II
Heretic II
---------------
This 4 games above have continuing story and belong together

Dark Forces
Descent
Descent II

I guess, enough for now? ;)

Well the oldest 3D shooter I can think off is Platoon (for C64 - in the late 80's). In level two of the game you were moving around the undergroud system of tunels and enemy soldiesr were attacking you (but only this level was 3D - the rest of the game wasn't).

FreeFredy I got to say that Doom don`t use 3D sprites. The only thing that is 3D in the game is the map.At least I played it like anyone in the planet. :D

Quake and I believe Hexen 2 had 3d models. I'd have to double check on Quake as well but I'm pretty sure.

I am pretty sure that Quake use skins. I am not sure skins can be considered as "3D models"...

Also for me, especially in the later levels. :D
Also, another 3D game I can remember was Pool of Radiaki or like that. Never played it though. And don't forget the (still not abandoned) Terminator FPS's, like Terminator Future Shock and like.

Hum... ok people, read my post again, I didn't just say 3d games, but 3d games with 3d models/sprites.

And yes I know all about Quake and other ID games...

you should try Catacombs, The Abyss. That was a pretty sweet game for its time.

quite a few open source games are good to play but that said i think ID make the best shooters followed by microsoft.

I came across a 1st person shooter in my collection last week. I've never played it as I don't like action games, but it might fit your description, Wolf. It's called Rebel Moon Rising. I've asked Kosta if he'd be interested in the game. I'll upload it if he is. It was made in 1997 by Fenris Wolf and is about 17 meg - zipped. There is no reference to it on HOTU, but Moby games have some screenshots and info.

I believe he was asking about games that preceed Quake, which was released in 1996.

I'm not sure if there were any such games, but nonetheless Quake was the first game to popularize and "get the ball rolling" on the 3d-sprite thing.

I noticed nothing great on the Quake graphics. Really.

Perhaps not on today's standards, but it was revolutionary by that times. And yes, I am a wanker.

Tom and I had a little discussion about early FPS a while back. We both agreed that of the few that where made in the mid nineties even fewer where worth playing. I would dare to say that not until the Quake 3 and unreal tournament engines became available there where very few good FPS games (although admitedly Half Life was quake 2).

I yawned at Quake 3. Kingpin was far more fun than most of the popular ones of that time. I'd still put it up against many of the ones out now as well. And yes, I am great admirer of Jeff K.
