Official site (http://www.guildwars.com/)
FAQ reads:

When will Guild Wars be released?

The beta begins in October. We will take as much time as necessary to balance and polish the game based on feedback received during the beta period, and anticipate that we will release Guild Wars by early 2005.
I suggest you read up on the FAQ, eh? ;)

Guild Wars is a MMORPG done by a bunch of Ex-Blizzard guys. It was SUPPOSED to be completely free, and would have been revolutionary in that there would be no updates, as such: all modification would be made in real time serverside then streamed to the client as you played.

However, it seems they've decided they didn't want it to be free, so it's a regular 40 up front, 15 a month now.

I played the beta for a few days, and got bored with it just as fast. Nothing new or special, just same-old shite.

Where did you get that from? The FAQ still says there'll be no monthly fee...

Is there a way to play the beta free?

Hm. I stand corrected on the fee part.

I was involved in one of the beta tests. It's different to most other MMORPGS as you travel from town to town and take missions seperately to other people if that makes sense. So you choose your party and then your mission in the town and you sort of get teleported to the place where the quest/mission is. Graphically rather good and the gameplay is interesting as you can improve many different skills but can only carry 8 of them into battle with you.

I'm anxiously awaiting the beta event that starts tommorow, so I'll let you know my thoughts on it then. Basically, Arena-Net's goal is to remove the frusturating aspects of most MMORPGS, like leveling treadmills, class imbalances, long travel times and kill stealing that are rampant in games like Everquest and Dark Age of Camelot (I should know, I played Camelot for a long time before it became unbearable :( ) No monthly fee, easy access for all players to pve and pvp, it looks like it could be very good.... I'll know more after the beta concludes on Sunday.
